3 Ways to Move Files into Google Drive

Today I want to talk to you about something I get asked a lot by people who are just starting to use Google Drive, “How do I move files from my computer or from my email into my Google Drive?”
There are a three ways to move files into your Google Drive and in this video, I want to discuss with you which way works best for certain scenarios, as there are some differences and some drawback in some situations, which is good to be aware of.
Option 1 - Download directly from your Google Email to your Google Drive
One of the ways you can save files is by saving them directly from your Gmail into your Google Drive, in the cloud, through your Chrome Browser. This bypasses the need to download them to your computer first, which takes unnecessary time.
This procedure is a good option for all types of files, whether small or large because its direct from Google Gmail to Google Drive. You can download single or multiple files in one folder in one go.
When you click the Google Drive icon it will just save the file into the root folder of your Google Drive. (If you do nothing else, the file will just sit in your “My Drive”. So it's good to organise your files, so the next step is to make sure it is saved in the right folder).
Once you click the the attachment in your Gmail, you can see the Organise option. Click Organise and you can select which folder you want to move your attachment to.
Once completed, this will automatically show the file in your Google Drive. It will also synchronize the file in Google File Stream so the file appears in your local computer.
Option 2 - Drag and Drop from your computer to your Google Drive
The second way is to drag the file from your PC directly into Google Drive in your Chrome browser.
This is the a good way for uploading small files sizes you have locally on your computer - up to about 5MB to 10MB, depending on your internet speed. It if takes less than a minute or two to upload that is a good guide.
You can just drag the file you need over to your Chrome Browser into a Google Drive tab your already have open. For small files up to 5-10Mb this may take less than a minute to complete.
However, there is a downside on this process. If you close the browser while the file is still uploading, it will interrupt the transfer of your file. So trying this technique with large files isn’t great as you can often forget and turn off your computer or close the Chrome browser window while it is still working on the upload.
Another benefit of moving files in this way is version control. If you want to upload another version of your file that is slightly modified and has the same filename, Google Drive will keep track of the versions of the file.
Option 3 - Move or Copy File(s) to your local Google Drive Folder on your PC
The third way is best done when transferring large files in your Google Drive.
Just copy the file from your local PC folder and paste it in the Google File Stream folder. The Google File Stream app will then start to work on uploading that file into your Google Drive in the cloud.
This may take long time to upload when moving large files. However, the big benefit is that even if you close your browser or turn your PC off, it will just pick up where it left off and continue uploading and synchronizing your files to Google Drive.
Summary
So that’s the three ways on how to move files into your Google drive.
The first way is to download files from your email, the second way is to drag and drop files into your Google Drive on your browser, and the third way is to copy files from you local folders into the Google Stream folders to sync up to you Google Drive.
With these three ways, you can choose on what’s the best way to use depending on the type of files you are to transfer.

Wow, thank you. Finally, all my crochet patterns are all together in an album in Google Drive where they belong. Not all crochet sites, or any sites let you upload to Google drive. Half of my patterns were in the Downloads folder and I just kept forgetting about them. Now I can take them all to the library where they can just hook up to Google Drive and print them ALL off for me. That was IMPOSSIBLE while they were in downloads since the same downloads are not in my phone that is on computer. I still don't know why that is even though it syncs. Neither is KZbin for that matter. Your such a great teacher and the only one to address this topic on youtube. Maybe you can tell us why downloads & youtube are different on phone than on our laptops...and yes, we are synced. HeeHee. You have a new subscriber in me. Thank you for that informative video. I transferred several folders and files from my laptop hard drive to my google drive. A couple months later, I noticed that files that were within sub folders are present but empty. There are many videos on how to recover files, but the files are not missing- the content of the files are missing. Could you advise on what I did wrong ? I was using Windows 10. Will the "details(date created, modified)" be preserved and reflected as-it-is when checked on the uploaded ones in the G-Drive ? Files, folders sync quickly. Why is this happening? Have you ever checked this? I am using Windows 10 Pro, activated, updated, a powerfull Desktop PC, 500 Mbps internet connection. Do you have any opinion? Thank you.

by dargging to the Google drive - are you making a duplicate copy? I am having troups selecting which folders on my local drive to be synched. Whe I say sync the entire local drive - it takes too long. Then I may create a new file on my loval drive but it does not get synced fats enough because it's waiting in queue. any tips?

If you drag multiple times you could be making duplicate copies, unless dragging to the same folder. Google has file deduplication which should match any duplicates. For long sync, there is no magic bullet. You just have to wait longer. Once first full sync is done, it'll be faster. Why sync entire local drive, why not just specific folders you need?

I have music that was put into Google doc it turned into random numbers and letters when it was completed . Question is Once I put it back into my Google drive will it go back to it's original format . Actual songs I can listen to. Please help

No, unlikely. I'm assuming the music has decoded to ASCII text which means it can't recognise that MIME format of the file being inserted into the Google Doc to make it work (imagine a picture inserted into a work document that is in a weird format, if it can't recognise the MIME format that weird text is what you get). Putting music into a Word Doc seems a little unusual. Why not just store the music directly in Google Drive? Also be conscious, Google may have copyright laws that limit you uploading copyrighted music into Google Drive. Not sure, but just a thought worth checking as well.

Yes you could. Google backup and sync (personal) and Google Drive Filestream (business) use completely different apps so just log into each app respectively with the right Google accounts. That said, I don't recall if Filestream has the same type of backup-like capability like the sync app does. I also don't recall the size storage for Filestream so just google that to check.

Hi, to use Google file stream you need a Google business account called G Suite gsuite.google.com/ Alternatively if you just want a personal drive you can sign up to google Gmail accounts.google.com/ and then use their Google Drive app called Google Backup and Sync www.google.com/drive/download/backup-and-sync/

It depends on what the 9 gigabytes of data is. I think we're not as photos and videos from my phone to Google photos using the Google photos app. And if you install the Google drive app you can upload files. It's best to be on Wi-Fi so it uses Wi-Fi data for the upload

From my experience, I think this is right. If I just open a file, and I have permission to change it (which I would if it is my file), then any changes I make to that file automatically get saved on Google Drive. If I send it to someone else and give them permission to edit (while I am sending it), then their changes get saved in Google Drive as well. If I download the file to my computer, that separates the connection to Google Drive, and it becomes an independent file. Any changes only happen on the new file, residing on my computer. Try this out yourself before you count on it. This is why, if you ever want to make a similar file by starting with one on Google Drive, you need to make a copy of the original file first before making any changes. And, as I recall, making the copy from Google docs on my Android phone makes the new file a pdf, which I can't change. So, I usually let that one replace the original file and use the original doc file to edit and rename as my new file.

hi thanks, useful. however, too fast, too much in one video and please try to stop whizzing the cursor around, makes it confusing trying to keep up. And I didn't get it clear about 'local storage in drive and cloud' isn't the whole point to back it up off the computer?
