I've been experimenting with this for a couple of days now. I'm an amateur python enthusiast, and this thing is just amazing. I feed it my code with a request to make it better and it just rewrites it with an actuall explanation and reasoning behind every change. It's great for learning and saves a TON of time that I would normally spend figuring out how to fix errors.

I've been using ChatGPT to do research on APIs I need to use for work, as well as having it break down computer science algorithms for me, especially from papers I've struggled to understand on my own (I have no formal background in CS and am an entirely self-taught programmer). Yesterday it was "Compiling Pattern Matching to Good Decision Trees" by L. Maranget. Today I've been using it to build a bidirectional type inference/checking system that includes Rust-like enums and traits for a programming language I want to build. It's incredible. I understand the algorithms well enough now to feel like I can begin writing code that implements them in real projects.

That's nice in the short term, but in the long term there will be a huge change in our delicately balanced system and I can't imagine how that will happen without a lot of deaths while the system settles in a new stable position. Imagine a business firing 75% of their employees and replacing them with AI. Great, now not only that you don't have to pay those salaries, but the AI is more efficient too, so huge increase in profits, right? Not really, because everywhere around the world people will lose their jobs so you won't have anyone to sell your product/service too.

that's always been at the heart of good plagiarism. "borrow" ideas and rewrite them in your own words and explore the references others have used for related quotes. of course if an idea is too original or unique you can't use it without attribution, but often you're touching on ideas the instructor already knows but impressed your "research" brought you to the same conclusions/observations. key word searches and AI has harmed students imo. prior to keyword search technology you had to read books to get at the ideas you wanted and often ended up reading lots of stuff you didn't directly use in your report. but in reading all the other stuff you gained enormous knowledge and depth of understand.

It’s a minefield for sure and the speed at which AI has emerged is crazy. I’m a 50 year old PhD student working in a marine technology area of study. I don’t have a coding background but (in my area) know what a piece of software needs to do, what the inputs, outputs and rules are, and how it will be used. So I have found AI incredibly useful in developing particular pieces of code to help me process and display data. It’s a partnership- I set the context and rules, and then it’s a rapid back and forth with me testing the suggestions that come. There would be no way that I would have even heard of the code libraries used without going down this road. Having worked with real software developers in the past, there is a massive amount of similarity, and without the need for me to feel embarrassed about lack of coding knowledge over some (to the developer) simple and obvious issue. From working in education and edtech the past 20 years, I see that ChatGPT will offer the education system at large possibly one of the greatest opportunities it has ever received and that is to question the purpose of education and therefore evolve the system towards a structure which focuses on something more meaningful and beneficial to every individual student and all of humanity at large. For the past 15-20 years all students have already been able to cheat in their learning and assessment and ChatGPT will only make this easier, but more difficult to detect. Plus, what is the point of learning a lot of content in school which the majority of people will never use in their lifetimes, often this just leads to disengaged students and results. What humanity has become great at is learning what we need to learn when we need it on the go from platforms like Google, KZbin and others. So what is the point to learning unnecessary content earlier in life when we already have all the knowledge we need on hand in our mobile devices when we need it. So, I feel the whole education system can be re-purposed towards something much more evolutionary to humanity. Example, what if we put much more focus on teaching our students how to become the best possible versions of themselves, not what to think or to be in life like current model dictates, but to support all students to become the best version of what they want to become. How about we focus on helping students to develop really healthy self-esteems, critical thinking, emotional intelligence and levels of confidence and competence within their areas of interest so they can become valuable to society in the direction they want to go in. Generally speaking, we know that disengaged students in school end up developing low self esteems and therefore lose out on opportunities in life, often leading to living a life a low socio-economic demographics, but, if given the chance, will thrive if they are nurtured properly through their early years of learning and development. Anyways, I see that if schools and universities etc don't evolve with AI like ChatGPT, then the education system will continue to degrade and lose more of it's core purpose in society. Yet, if it evolves towards a model which serves humanity in a healthy uplifting way, then it could become the golden key to creating a better future for all of humanity. Time will tell!

Yeah, this is paradigm shift kind of stuff we are seeing. We just have to be patient enough to let it grow to where it can the kind of user size that is/will be using it. I already find it a LOT more useful than Google when it comes to problem solving and answering questions. It is currently teaching me how to use Python to program better than the college class on it I took.
