Candie Smith I agree! I’m growing peppers, beans, lettuce, tomato’s, strawberries, potatoes, cabbage, herbs and have been researching on onions from seeds and fruit trees and her videos always seem to pop up right when I think about wanting to grow a new vegetable! They are the best and I have been taking so many notes that have helped my gardens life!

Just make sure you know your growing zone. Your zone will determine when you start your seeds and whrn they go in the ground. Example. Zone 9a we start our onion seeds in sept to be in the ground by mid nov and we over winter them down here.

Hi Laura, I have a question: P. Allen Smith has a segment on his show where viewers send in pictures of there property or areas of their yard and he recommends what they should plant in those areas or how they could change the landscape. Could you do something like this as well, I love P . Allen Smith but it would be awesome to have another designer with ideas do this too? Thanks!

@@jessicamal78 I love them both. I really love his gardens & the gardens he visit. But honestly I sometimes cringe @ some of the suggestions of plants he tells people to plant (especially certain shrubs right against their foundations); I personally think Laura's ideas would be so much better & visually appealing! So great idea!!!😁👍

I don't have a garden at my current house, but I always plant onions or shallots in containers on my deck (Seattle area) and have very good luck with it. I especially love having green onions almost any time I need them, since I purposely plant the seedlings too close together in order to thin them that way. Highly recommended!

Wow!! This is so full of good info. I am excited to find some onion plants. Such a good price you found ! One thing ... have you watched Charles Dowding... he follows the scientific way of not disturbing your soil... (no dig method). just add compost each season and he’s had wonderful results with so much less work. I think it would be hard for you .... we get set it our ways, but I’m thinking it would be worth it for you to study it .. I’m trying it ...I’m 60 yrs old so a lot of habits to change ☺️☺️

You have really inspired me to start a couple of raised beds this year. My yard is very small but I have a nice full sun area that will support two 4X6 raised beds. Cutting the sod out of the lawn is pretty labor intensive! I'm also going to grow a few things in large pots as well. I was thinking strawberries in one and basil and cilantro in the other. I'm very new at this because I've always been a flower gardener so this year will have a pretty sharp learning curve, I'm sure. That's why I appreciate your videos so much! Not to mention that it is a calm place in a very stormy world. Thank you!

I'm SO grateful you shared this video when you did, it was literally perfect timing! I bought my onion starts the day before your video went live. I bought two 6 pack of starts. I watched your video & then my kids & I went out & planted 50 Walla Walla shoots. It was very fun learning & planting with my children.

I’ve always started with bulbs - usually costing about $3-$4 per bag of 100. This was also a great way when my daughter was 2 years old (now 13) to get her involved because they were so easy and fun for her to plant. Once the shoots are tall I’ll use them as “scallions” cutting what I need and leaving the bottom half and bulb intact. Over time the bulbs mature into full onions (the size varies depending how close I planted them), so basically I get a few months of green onions and then harvest the bulb!

Two beginner's questions...for planting depth, is it (for ex.) so the root end of a bulb is 1in deep or the sprout ends? Less relevant for small bulbs, but some are large, like for some flowers. Also, how do I know how many weeks there are until the last frost?? I hear that a lot, but have no idea how I'd predict that.

1. I usually bury the sprout end about 1 inch deep, so the root end is a bit deeper than that. 2. You can google ‘average last frost date’ then your zip code to find that info out or ask someone at your local garden center! I used to answer phone calls with that question all the time when I worked down at the garden center! 👍

Laura, when I had my garden center, I recommended to customers that they use onion plants to grow large onion bulbs. They will be named varieties and have fewer bloom stalks that cause more rotting. The little bulbs are wonderful for quick green onions in the spring. The ones that get to big for green onions make delicious little sweet onions for eating raw long before the seedlings are ready to harvest.

Beginner videos like this are SO helpful. I consider myself to be a budding gardener and attribute that to you! I own a condo and recently planted strawberries for the first time. I even setup a drip system! I’ve noticed that the water coming out starts out brown, then turns clear. I assume it’s rust from the pipes. Is that safe to use with edible plants? I’ve tried researching this, but haven’t had any luck finding an answer. Thank you for being a garden inspiration and for sharing your knowledge! Your videos bring so much joy to my day! 😊

Hi Laura...perfect timing, thank you! I read that if you want the really huge walla walla's you need to push about an inch of soil away from from the bulb after it has about a 2 inch diameter...like a small trench. It's called "ringing". Do you do that and have you heard of it? Thanks!

In your recap video you mentioned Thunder Egg??!! I tried to find the video where you found the egg to no avail. Can you link that in your next recap video and also give us more info? I googled Thunder Egg and found an Oregon Public Broadcasting story. Very interesting! Every night - you make my night! You and your family are beautiful inside and out - it shows through on the videos by you just being your own sweet self. Bless you all! Jennifer

Right on time! I planted some walla walla starts (plants) in a whiskey barrel yesterday. Have sets in the raised beds. We'll see which ones do best!

If you step on the sets after they are growing be sure that they are growing good first. the bulb will get huge my dad used to that and our sets got very large . This stepping on the plant caused the onion to get like what you get at the grocery store

Hi Laura and Aaron! This was very interesting. I tried growing green onions in pots years ago, but didn't have very good results. I probably didn't take care of them properly. Now that I know more about them, I may try again. Thank you for sharing!
