Hi Shannon. I'm a little confused. After watching the video you said you would love to know what questions the viewer has yet you haven't addressed any of the questions. You stated you are partnering with Kingston. Don't you think you should answer some of the questions? Please go back and read the questions and answer them if you wouldn't mind. I have some of the same concerns as other viewers have already taken the time to ask. Additionally, I'm wondering what happens if the drives were untouched for several years and the rechargeable battery for EACH of these devices was depleted. What then??? TY

KZbinrs always says stuff like this in order to make people comment on the video, the more comments the more youtube shows the video on other peoples feed as a suggestion - So its only to create traffic for her channel nothing else - thats why all youtubers says the typical "like comment subscribe"

Interesting! For the ones with a 3 yr battery, would that affect the practicality of using it as mainly a storage drive? If I don't need to use it all the time, would I have to use it once a week or something to keep the battery fresh? And if the battery dies after 3 yrs, I suppose that means you must buy a new battery or a new drive. That raises questions about replacing the battery and how to know when to do that, or making sure you back up your back up and buy a new drive and start all over again, which kinda would defeat the purpose? Thanks!! 👏🏼

If the drive fail, will be very hard to recover data. If using this drive proper back up is very important

no tamper protection on the ironkeys? You should have a look at the datashur options, I have been a user for over 5 years and still happy, you need a keypad or touchpad physically on the drive otherwise have a look at the Samsung T5 or T7 which also support encryption with a software unlock

I would love one of these built as a USB dongle passthrough to off the shelf USB drives

My god, thats such a simple but genius idea, but like... How would it be implemented? Just use the dongle to authenticate then decrypt the whole drive seems like a poor set up - in case you're separated from your drive; so you could make an auto locking set up to re-encrypt it, while they're connected, but then you have to have an indicator for when they're safe to seperate, so no one borks their data. Plus if you forget to re-encrypt the USB then its just as vulnerable as any other drive?... So - I think optimally the dongle should have it's own storage/memory buffers, and decrypt portions of the data on the fly, kind of like how pipes, buffers, and such work in the terminal. While the USB drive is completely useless without the pass-through... Theoretically you could even have the device partition the USB into like 10 sections, randomly order them, and set file flags to split large files into portions over them... That way even if someone with hardware access was just bruteforcing encryption keys on the drive forever, they would still just see random data, unless they somehow know which non-contiguous flash regions. And in what order they should be... have the bits of your files to decrypt.

Your videos are great with good information. With a little more skill (bravery) in this type of thing, I plan on storing my digital trust, important account numbers and passwords on a keypad equipped thumb drive similar to the first one shown.

I would love the keypad 200 with a metal door covering the buttons instead of a cover and retractable usbc. A real ssd controller like my buffalo 500gb is a must. Looking forward to winning that contest Snubs!

Hey I just thought about something on the first device. what if someone just wants to maliciously erase your drive then they could just try 10 times and they successfully delete your files?

If you only plan to use your storage devices on your own, presumably trusted, computers then software encryption is much cheaper and IMO more convenient because it can be used with almost any SSD, flash drive, or whatever. It might be useful to produce a video that walks people through creating software encrypted storage, maybe using Veracrypt secured with a Yubikey. I would watch that.

I have all 3 devices you are showcasing due to my extensive travel-work in Africa, Asia and Europe. I personally like the External hard drive the most but Kingston could have SIGNIFICANTLY increased security by including small letters and special characters too. I have the 4TB version. I find an Apple Pen or other similar device best for tapping in the passcode as i have “fat digits.” Second, I use the passphrase for the USB drive as it allows a much longer encryption and is the most secure IRONKEY device for brute force. I have the 512GB USB-C version. My least favorite is the external keypad USB drive but it is also good. It is the least secure of their 3 devices in my opinion. I have the 512GB USB C version.

Any device that destroys data only for incorrect attempts is not really idea. You definitely do not want your only copy to be on such a device.

Shannon why use this over open source file encryption like veracrypt etc? I realise this has hardware encryption and the security features to prevent electronics access etc but then you have the trust issues of not being open source? Would someone in your position be that much worse off with a software encryption tool (i.e. not carrying state level secrets) than going to this extent? Not trying to be critical just curious (from someone with limited resources to verify these things) as I remember there was always a bit of scepticism around Ironkey (being american govt backed) in the original days and haven't heard much about them since they sold the business (though I know several business level people who use to swear by the old Ironkey).

With there being a non-zero chance of this SSD being wiped, how often do you find yourself backing up the drive?

is it a quick wipe or a 3 pass standard? Seems just a wipe or fat format would still leave data recoverable. any restrictions on using this as a portable os?

Hey Shannon, do you think the SSD would make a good external backup drive.. reliable enough and conducive to longer term storage? Perhaps not an entire system backup but a decent amount of files?
