Okay, messed around for a while refilling my LC 101 cartridges. I used the kit and the adapter tips they sell. This is what I learned. Refilling is easier when you stand the cartridges up on its front end. Black cartridge needs to be propped up with something due the rounded edge but the color ones sit flat. The black cartridge (if empty) holds 10-11ml, the colored cartridges (if empty) holds a max of 5ml. If you add anymore the ink backs into the air valve and makes a mess. When injecting the ink press the air valve once for every 2-3ml of ink injected. That way the pressure dosesn't built up so much and you'll get very little if any ink splatter out of the air valve. I also touched a paper towel to the ink port after I was done. Soaking up the extra ink there really helped control the mess. I also had issues getting all my colors to print properly. I had let my printer sit way too long with empty cartridges and everything was dried and clogged up. Several cleaning cycles later and my printer works like it should.

Hey Kevin! Just wanted to thank you bro! For the very useful and accurate instructions. Specially, this one: "Do NOT give up too early...!" I've got a TS3440 PIXMA which has PG-440 & CL-445 cartridges. And I used to refill them with insulin syringes, without no trouble. But, after awhile the black cartridge stop printing even after refilling (I did not used to prime the cartridges at that time nor was aware of its necessity!) So I've end up breaking open the cartridge lid and removing the sponge trying to make an sponge less one, after seeing the near dry and almost white sponge in there. However failed to airproof the lid, everything was fine except for the ink flow to bottom plate. So I had to remove the lid again, though it was very hard this time- I had to sink the cartridge in acetone for several hours, trying to place back the sponge, fixing the gaps & ... After all, the most valuable tip of you which I kept in mind was "Do NOT give up too early, show your printer who is the boss!" Thank you brother, thank you very much!

I have LC103Xl cartridges that don't have those manual venting valves. My cartridges have a vent hole on one side..when I fill them, some ink dribbles out..

Do you have information on how to know when a cartridge is filled? I have a Brother MFC-J69ODW. The black is bigger than the other 3 colors LC103 Y, C, M, & BK without disassembling them is there a way to know how much to fill with?

I have a J480DW and it doesn't work on mine just comes up with a "Cannot Detect" on the screen. Do I need to alter the chip as I was told the chips prevent you using the same cartridge and topping it up?

Will this also work with starter cartridges? Or are they different from the standard cartridges? Will the chip or internal bladder size cause problems if I keep refilling it?

Not that I know of. I refilled our own starter cartridges and it's been working fine.

Hi Kevin, I refilled my starter cartridge and I ran into some problems. The black was working fine for a while but lately it has been printing real light. The printer keeps saying to change it to a genuine cartridge because it can't ink level despite the cartridge is almost full. What should I do?
