I accept it's about evolving and moving forward but I kind of miss the dopamine hit from the filter-sweep & chemex intro :D

Hey Ricky! Instead of copying the track in Ableton and deleting its content, you could set up a DEFAULT AUDIO TRACK. This way you can just create a new audio track and it automatically has the correct input selected. Great video as usual!

Thanks for this. Recently got RME and just spent about 2 hours trying to route an external effect in Ableton, only to find out there's a DAW mode, which works perfectly! Will be rewatching this for sure ❤

This is extremely helpful Ricky. Exactly the type of routing/workflow I need to configure in Totalmix. Even though TM is very flexible, I feel the UX could be improved. One example, loopback input not showing any metering. I found this confusing at first. Thanks for sharing.

The RME Remote control is an absolute must have. I almost never have to look at Total Mix. There's also a way to control presets without Total Mix at all through what RME call "setups", stored directly in the audio interface.

agreed - or a midi controller even

Thanks for sharing. I feel like RME is totally underrated. I went through tons of different interfaces. Since I got the UCX II, I never looked back.

Thanks for that video! I think it shows how important the 'Know Your Gear' department is or at least can be. It may not come across as the most fancy stuff to do in the studio, but I feel the importance of videos like this, as they hint at what else there is to take care of - and how much the overall workflow may evolve and improve (in one way or another). And even though these aren’t exactly the most shiny bits, I tend to say that as part of the foundations of the studio and the workflow it is very important to talk about those things, too. And that’s why I am thankful that you take your time to make entire videos even about those things, share what you have learned about it … and get others to set apart some of the studio time to dig into those aspects as well. Thank you very much!

i appreciate you coming to terms with only running one or two things in at once. i've pined over increasing my inputs but thinking honestly i usually get what i need out of the hardware very quickly and at most i'm running a stereo channel into my computer

I've been getting some of the same important functionality that's here with voicemeeter potato and a Motu 4x4. Still get 48khz and less than 30ms latency to output. Have the ability to flexibly route signal sources and destinations and patch any audio into Ableton easily. Pretty cool for free software

Glad you are liking the RME! You clearly explained all the same stuff I struggled with when I first got TotalMix, so this should help out a lot of people. It's such powerful routing that I don't think I can work without it anymore now.

Yea it's wild how useful it is and how quickly it integrated into my setup. Usually when I get new tools it takes awhile for me to use them to their full extent

Awesome! thanks for sharing your audio routing journey, i feel like it's this secret problem everyone runs into when they buy some shiny new gear but have no clue how to (cleanly and repeatedly) get it into the computer. super helpful to see someone share the steps along the way. i have a feeling there will be a few more steps to come 😉

Some really useful tips on workflow here, thanks. I have Ableton coming out on 3/4 so can easily switch between listing to Ableton or just computer apps. I then route 1/2 into an audio channel if I want to record KZbin, Spotify, etc. those are then duplicated into headphones mixes and can easily switch between them with RME ARC

Hi Ricky awesome video!! I'm sold on the Rme ucx ii. I'm curious as to what part does the Focusrite Octopre play in your studio setup? I'm planning recording live drums and wonder if it is possible to connect 2 Focusrite Octopre to the Rme Ucx II?

Off Topic (but related to your studio). Like you, i don't usually have all my noise toys hooked up at once. I am working on my music room and i have synths piled around the room wrapped in their plastic bags and i noticed that cabinet in the thumb, with the pull-out shelves. Nice score. I need exactly that, to neatly store my toys too. Is that something you bought online or bought locally?

I'm not using my old RME firewire mostly because it's firewire but also because I never got to grips with total mix (i.e. absolutely hated it). After watching this video... I wonder if it's worth daisy chaining some adapter cables? hahahaha

hi ricky. your earlier video was one reason i abandoned ua for rme. i like totalmix! but do you have any idea on how to better read the meters? i don't like how the only number on the meters is unity (0), is there a way to see -6, -12, etc.? the meters seem to show rms and peak together so there is even more reason for scaled meters but right now i can only see actual levels in reaper/able10...

I think focusright has similar software for the scarlett, right? I think I can do all this on my gen3 8i6. Use it a lot actually, but only for 2 basic scenario's (I liked the brain analogy, it's hard). Finally got my first patchpay, so probably a good time to dig back into the mixing software + loopback.

Yep well said! "Octopus" :) I do have 24 inputs with my EVO16+ADAT and I do have my Ableton template with all input channels. Totally cool, but I never use them all at the same time... never! Totally distracting. I usually use one or two synths and record them. In the end a small mixer with maybe 2 USB channels is good enough. Any Behringer mixer can do it. You can use the synths you have and record them when you need them. Enjoy the weekend!!
