Here are 3 simple tips I use daily to avoid those dreadful moments that cause damage to your favorite watch.
_________________________________________________________________________
All of us have had that moment where we scratch our beloved watch. And it just kills us inside. Some of us are more OCD than others about it but let’s face it, doesn’t matter if its a luxury watch (Rolex, Audemars etc.) or not we want to preserve it. These are 3 lessons that I have learned over the years that I want to show you that can help avoid these senseless scratches or dents to your watch.
The first is your belt. The belt is that that one item that always seems to find its way to scratch your watch. Most of time it’s when you are in a hurry or rush. I always avoid this by putting my watch last. After I have gotten dressed and of course, Put my belt on.
The second thing is use caution with doors and door ways. Something about those door frames or door handles that always seem to find its way to make contact with your luxury watch. I use a simple technique to avoid that and it’s to always keep your watch hand close to your body while your other hand handles the door. Easy thing that saves your Rolex, AP, Patek from damage. Especially the gas station doors! Those seem to be the worst of all.
The third is going to be the seat belt of your car. Something about that seat belt buckle that makes it a silent killer. Best way is to always remain full control of the buckle at all times while putting on and removing the seat belt. I scratched my Audemars Piguet royal oak bezel with this exact situation. And it causes damage. God forbid you were to hit a Patek Philippe Nautilus or a Rolex DayDate president or Rolex DateJust fluted bezel. It would be unforgiving.
Pretty much there are endless ways that you watch can get scratched or damaged. These are easy tips that I have mastered throughout the years and have made them my daily habits. I want to share them with you and hope that they can help you a bit.
Watches are meant to be worn and we have to wear them. Doesn’t matter the price that they may be.
Thank You for watching!

I mastered the art of watch protection. I literally developed a sixth sense for it, i wear my Navitimer everyday to the office and in the past few years the entire case and crystal have touched nothing but the skin of my palms, thus leaving them looking like showroom condition even after years of extended use. I may walk a bit wierd as if I'm slightly disabled in my left arm but it pays off.

Door frames are my worst enemies. Door frames have hit my Hulk my IWC and my beloved Glashutte Original Pano Lunar. I often remember that technique when I am away, but at home; forget about it. My only advice is to keep your hands out of your pockets, it's the perfect spot for dorr frames to attack. Keep working mate, good to see you back in your natural element. I hope you and your love-ones are safe.

Hi Eric! Glad to see you're doing your own thing. Some thoughts on the scratch topic... 1. I always put my hand behind me instead of in front of me when passing doors and other tight areas. Because if you meet someone they can scratch the watch if they bump into you. Less risk if you keep the watch behind you. 2. Holding hand with a woman. Always hold the womans hand with your non-watch hand. Women always have nasty bracelets that will mess up your watch. 3. General crowded situations: Either pull your sleeve over the watch, or hold your hand over it. Better put greasy spots on it than scratching. 4. At the office to avoid desk diving when sitting with your computer, yes this is a plug, but putting your watch on our product The Watch Stand mitigates this major issue.

Yup! Desk diving marks! I always make it a point not to rest my watch clasp or bracelet on the table while typing on a keyboard. If it's gonna be a long day typing on the computer, I remove my watch totally. All the extra precautions I take all this while really preserved my beloved watch scratch-free completely and looking brand new. No one believe that watch is a few years old. I definitely have OCD when it comes to maintaining my watches without scratches and even finger prints.

4. The other people's watch, for some reason people just like to walk towards you real close, sometimes on your watch arm side, and they also wear a watch, it is really easy to crash your watch together, when this happens I always hide my hand behind my back to prevent any accident.

Great video Eric! ... one thats gotten me a few times is having something in or near the center console of a car (depends on car of course) ... like maybe a metal water bottle, or steel coffee cup in the cup holder at wrist height, bang ;-( ... or even the shifter if your in a hurry and not paying attention. Railings on stairs or balustrades also suck. And ... Kids! (yours or other peoples) ... they are like magnets for anything you reeeeally dont want to happen, like they will just randomly jump out of a broom closet with a golf club and smack you right on the timepiece! (or the nuts), gotta love em.

I scratched the gold links and the gold part of the clasp on my two tone Rolex GMT Master 2 putting on a simple Kathmandu rain coat/jacket and taking it off. Moving forward, my gold watches come off before putting on a long sleeved jacket or removing the long sleeved jacket. High grade brushed steel watches, no problem. But if it’s a highly polished steel watch, like the oyster bracelet on a Batman with the polished inner link, I’ll remove the watch first.

I remember scratching my watch for the first rime (first "serious" watch I had, last year) I was entering my kitchen, which has a particular handle, or I should say had. I was in a rush, because school was calling on my phone but I couldn't find it. I ran straight into that handle, bumping my watch. The bezel got dent. After I talked to the school, I grabbed the handle and pulled so hard it came off, now we have a better one. Never F*** with my watches

Being a city/business person, I always walk while holding my phone on my watch hand so you won’t scratch it while walking and won’t look weird holding your hand out all the time!

Good point. Also hold your drink with the watch hand.

Hey Eric keep it rollin’, 1. Always walk to the left of your lady, especially if she’s wearing a diamond ring, it will kill the bezel and the sapphire crystal. 2. Meeting table and desk chairs, if they’ve got metal or chromed parts. 3. Car trunk.

All of these examples I've learned to reflexively avoid through years of situational wrist-awareness and they aren't really an issue. My arch enemy however is a particularly dangerous pearl dialed lady's quartz Tag Heuer which tends to have sudden wildly erratic randomly flailing movements which cannot be anticipated.

I have OCD with regard to my watches. I use a product called "Ghost tape" that is used in the golf industry to protect drivers from damage when being used as demo clubs. I use this tape on the clasp of my gold watches. You can barely see it and it protects the clasp 100%. The adhesive is not overly tacky so removal is easy and clean.

Check when wearring a jacket. Some of them have metal buttons that will scratch the watch.

Very usefully information about avoiding scratches , however I can't help it but to comment that in the word Audemars the s is not pronounced.

I ALWAYS wear an athletic/sports wrist band over my watches most of the time except when I want to show it off. The wrist band completely covers the watch. Then I slide the wrist band up my forearm and under my sleeve to reveal the watch

Watch is the last thing I put on too. And if I’m going to be working with my hands I’ll either not wear a good one or just throw an old beater on. I don’t see any reason that I should put unnecessary wear and tear when it can be avoided. Kind of like not walking on grass or sand with a fresh pair of kicks. I always carry a beater pair in my trunk too.
