The American health care system is insane... I'm Australian, I spent 2 weeks in hospital, was sent home with a months worth of medication, and was sent a bill a month later for $24 to cover the meds... and when I called to settle up the bill, they were like "oh you only have to pay for it if you can afford it" Always sending good vibes to Americans in hopes y'all will get great changes asap

I’m an Aussie… My mother had a brain tumour in 2008. From getting diagnosed, numerous MRIs, neuro surgery, a week in the hospital, medication when she went home…. She paid a $35 co-pay for her initial GP appointment, and then left hospital with a bill for $126. She had surgery 3 weeks after the diagnosis. That was only because she had to have a crown replaced at the dentist and the dr agreed she should get it done before the surgery so they pushed it a week. Sometimes when I open my payslip I look at the amount of tax taken out and get annoyed. Then I remember my mum is alive and well, and my parents didn’t have to mortgage the house to cover the costs. The Aussie system has much room for improvement, especially for mental health and women’s health, but we a safety net and we are all better off because of it.

I'm prone to injury and always keep a few essentials on me just in case. I've taken to wearing an allergy mask everywhere to avoid migraines (Vogmask doesn't really let smells into the mask), and it seems I'm getting sick less too. But it's hard. I grew up with pretty much yearly ear and foot infections (which is ironic because of the phrase "how're your feet and ears?"). Thankfully I grew out of the ear infections, but I still get pain every now and then, especially with changes in altitude.

It's so bad in North America. My neighbour here in Canada waited 10 about hours after having what they later determined to be a mini-stroke, and was told to just go home and come back the next morning. It's really bad, but at least insurance covers what I've needed, and some things are free. Then again, I was quoted 2-3 years to get allergy testing after mango made my throat and mouth swell up, so they just gave me something called Allerject (basically an EpiPen that has voiced instructions in it, cost me $20) just in case it happens again, and told me to avoid this long list of related fruit. I'm just glad I can afford physio every couple weeks, and usually seeing my GP is a month wait. Some of my friends who don't have GPs (5 year wait to get one) have to wait hours at a walk-in to get any sort of help, whether it's a med refill, a referral for a test, or advice on how to deal with something.

@@joylox dang I thought the UK was doing badly enough with how underfunded the NHS is. I've had to take someone to A&E last week - we were there for 6 hours: triage, x-ray & CT. Luckily I could take my patient home that night. Looks like we'll be seeing at least two departments for outpatient follow up - but at least all I've had to pay for was some pain meds (~£10 per item) and parking at the hospital, and I'm so thankful I don't have to worry about how much it'll cost us.

Unfortunately, the experience you had of being trapped in the ER because there are literally 0 rooms available for you to go to is not an uncommon one. And I understand it's incredibly frustrating for the patients, but it's frustrating for us too, we aren't keeping you down there on purpose. I'm glad you recovered in time for your ceremony, though! Fingers crossed that that was the last hospital visit for you and yours for a very very long time!! ❤

This issue is relevant all over the world. Here in Malaysia, we also have a crisis which somehow the political will to end it, is a bit lagging. Since Covid, hospitals had been overwhelmed and they just haven't recovered. Speaking about held up in ER, my father went few months back for heart issues and was there for days before they had room at the cardio ward. Plus they almost postponed my father's heart procedure due to the slots were full. Thank god they didn't discharge him early until it was done.

I feel bad too. I feel worse because the wait times for some scans/xrays sometimes take a long time. I don’t know the specifics and y’all didn’t do anything wrong!! I was just gonna say though for future reference that someone who is autoimmune will not be protected almost at all by wearing a mask. They’re only protected if everyone around them is wearing a mask. That’s why it’s important everyone wear masks, it only works if everyone’s doing it. Same! I had to get my appendix removed so I hadn’t eaten in like 3 days prior to surgery and when I first ate hospital food it was sooo good, but then it starting going downhill the longer I was in the hospital😅

I'm honestly kind of surprised he didn't say something like, "needs Keith's taco sauce" or something. I have too many allergies and intolerances to eat hospital food, but thankfully the only time I had to stay there for any amount of time, they just gave out popsicles since it was a kid's hospital. I remember a relative of mine getting her family to bring takeout food that was better (tastier and gluten free).

@@alucio545 yeah I was in the same boat, I hadn't eaten in like 5 days, then they gave me some burnt toast and it was the best food I ever ate

When you said c-diff, I screamed “ooohh no!!!!” And my husband paused his music and came to check if I was ok 😅 You were really put through the ringer! So happy you made it out of the hospital in time for your wedding!

Thank you for talking honestly about how screwed the American medical system is, especially as someone with chronic health issues. Being in the ER twice in the past two weeks, I can't imagine having that many ER visits and hospital stays. I wish you and Maggie all the happiness and hope the universe blesses your wedding greatly after all that stress!

As immunesurpressed human myself I know how fast a "normal" infection can hit you so hard. I had surgery and my upper arm and it hot infected, also went in and out of hospitals for weeks. But not with my own wedding coming up, that is a whole new level of getting better stress. But I know how much it helpes to have your carring loving other half by your site supporting you through such hard times. So good to hear that you did recover from all this ❤
