Theorists, we need to talk about @tryguys situation and by that I mean the mainstream media coverage of it. See, I think the Try Guys handled the situation with professionalism. You know who didn't? The media making fun of them for being KZbinrs. That SNL skit? Not a good look. So, let's talk about all of it.

not to mention that it was mentioned in the trypod, keith was on tour with his band and eugene was working on other projects which effectively left zach, a chronically ill man, alone to deal with this for 2 or so weeks. ned literally put not only his company at risk, but his friends and family. zach mentioned that during that time he was stressed and was in *severe* pain.

Whenever something like this happens, it always angers me to see people make it seem like a man cheating on his wife is simply what happens, it's commonplace, it's not a big deal. That experience put my family through so much pain, my mom especially. That's why it was so refreshing for me to see how to Try Guys handled it, professionally without diminishing the harm Ned caused. It amazes me how this scandal can be so badly portrayed. The Try Guys actions were basically the perfect example of how to handle this type of situation. As soon as they were aware of the problem the worked continuously behind the scenes to solve it the correct and legal way and when it finally started to gain attention in the public domain made a video explaining the situation and explaining what they did and why before the story was twisted too much by speculation.

I think he deliberately omitted it to instead focus on the problematic aspects of this whole situation. Yes, the fact that Ned had a friend in SNL who wrote a sketch trivializing a power imbalance relationship mixed with infidelity as 'kissed a girl and didn't tell his friends' is important (and kinda funny) in the context of the situation but even if it wasn't written by his friend, the sketch would be equally bad. I remember in the past that the Try Guys were one of the few KZbinrs who had gained a lot of widespread legitimacy. Their reputation was pristine, they were professional, brand friendly, and family friendly. I wasn’t at all surprised when they were picked up by the Food Network for a TV show for that reason. I think that BECAUSE they helped legitimize online content creators they are now being targeted by more traditional media outlets in a larger attempt to discredit the broader online community. If they can make it seem through this incident that the Try Guys never deserved their popularity and respect, they can make it seem like “see this is why you should never trust online creators. They’re immature. More likely to get into scandal. They are just popular, but not a good long term investment for your brand versus more stable old guard media companies.” I do think the Me Too movement and the skeletons in their closet play into this, but I still feel like that’s not enough to justify the so odd, out of touch responses by The NY Times and SNL. It makes more sense to me as a business strategy designed to paint content creators as unstable brands on the whole, trying to get investors to go back to traditional media, like traditional media is the stock market and online content creators are penny stocks. Sure you might get your ad to more viewers, but how will you feel when the online creator releases immature content that is then reflected onto your brand? Thought of this during MatPat’s beautiful rant.

Looking up their history, SNL habitually supports sexual abusers, and they refused to do a skit on Weinstein at all. SNL does not surprise me with defending Ned, especially knowing he has 2 writer friends who work there. What is appalling is NYT, which broke the Weinstein story. Entertainment journalists had been trying to get a victim to talk for 20 years! NYT made it happen! For NYT to support Ned…that is absolutely deplorable and I feel some rich person put them up to it. I have noticed that before. They once wrote an article about a rich brat who broke quarantine while visiting another country. No one bleeping cared except her rich family who had connections to NYT.

Now that this video is almost a year old, I have some conjecture to add since around this time of year YT likes to push older content: Ned mentioned in one of the podcast videos (can't remember which) that one of his college buddies from Yale worked as a writer on SNL, and how he was hoping to use that connection at some point to get the guys on the show. He never mentioned that friend by name, but the sleuths of the internet could easily find the name of this friend, and cross-reference it with the writing credits of that sketch. Considering that the sketch doesnt mention Ned by name at all and completely villifies the Try Guys for a common-sense business decision, I wouldnt be surprised if he called in a favor to that friend in an attempt to tarnish the brand that he was no longer a part of. 🤔

I think thats why the video left a bad taste in a lot of peoples mouths (I dont like how I worded that either but Im going with it) I think a lot of people see friendship as something sacred and guys especially have things like "bro codes" where it is implied that they have each others backs even if the world turns on them. A lot of people dont care about the controversy as much as the betrayal of friendship shown in the video because nobody really knows for sure what the details of the consensual relationship was BUT everyone knows how close the tryguys were (see other comments above calling them family). And a lot of people probably feel like they would not have done the same in their shoes. I know that it would take a LOT for me to drag one of my friends across the internet to save my brand and this controversy would not make the cut. Maybe I would have asked him to leave the channel to save it and the jobs of everyone involved but I dont think I would have made that video.

I think that the worst part is that Ned was friends and business partners with the other Try Guys and more importantly knew that this could affect them not only on a personal level but because he was the head of HR and in a relationship with a lower level employee which is a situation just rife with issues that could've very easily sunk the company and all of its employees financial lives. He knew not only that his actions could've hurt the business but would definitely have hurt his close friends who were also friends of his wife, and in the case of Eugene specifically someone who had suffered through being a child of divorce something Ned has now forced on his own daughter by making his own poor decisions. There's a reason why in that announcement Eugene was utterly pissed looking and it's because he knows some of the issues that Ned's daughter will encounter because of this from his own experience of a broken family.

@@mazzanda Yes, because a woman using charm or seduction to get a higher position in life NEVER happens (/s) and in case it does happen it's apparently the man's fault for falling prey to that sort of thing instead of it being the woman's fault for resorting to underhanded and non-professional conduct in the first place. You seem to be getting things backwards here, that "power imbalance" is the whole reason why a situation like this needs to be handled with careful scrutiny and BOTH parties' perspectives have to be thoroughly examined seriously because power can be extremely tempting to people who don't have it and said people can resort to underhanded means to get closer to that power. I'm not saying that this is definitely the situation and it's the fault of any one party, I'm just saying that people shouldn't be quick to make one sided blanket assumptions about anyone involved in any potentially sensitive situation. This is also ESPECIALLY true if it has anything to do with mainstream media or celebrities because then it quickly devolves into a game of Chinese whispers and who can scream the loudest or shell out the most money to record their take and present it as the gospel truth.

When I heard about the scandal when it was fresh, I was hurt and kinda annoyed because I thought “he’s not going to take any accountability, is he? He’s gonna get away with this and not suffer consequences just like every company…” because it happens so often. A company you trust has a scandal such as this and it’s forgotten in a week, swept under the rug with everyone disappointed but not surprised by the outcome. But when the Try Guys posted that video, sat down on the couch and explained everything from legal steps they took, to what was affected and lost by this event, all the way down to how they’re going to move forward with Ned removed from the picture entirely, I was relieved. They didn’t just swallow their pride to sit down and say that someone in their company didn’t share their integrity or align with their goals, they sat down and actively spoke out against it, being honest about the hit they’ve taken and what they’ve now lost because of Ned. It was down to earth and real. It felt much better to hear them sit down and tell us what happened instead of posting vague tweets and videos without Ned. Their editors were even going and working hard to remove Ned entirely from videos. A “Without a recipe” video had Ned replaced with an Elephant, so fans could still watch the videos, and not have to see him. It’s truly the people protecting Ned in the news outlets who are putting themselves on blast and trying to redirect fire by thinking that the younger people are stupid and will believe anything they say. They’re protecting Ned and trying to make the other guys look like the ones in the wrong and making it blatantly obvious that they’re covering up their own scandals. Wel said, Briz. Matt always seems to have well researched, and professional takes on things like this. SNl/NYT really messed up here

Open marriages are fine, there's communication and trust there. Having an affair is not ok; there's secrets, lies, breaking trust. One is you and your partner talking and coming to an agreement, the other is the cheater going behind their partners back in an act of pure selfishness. Even ignoring the legal stuff, what Ned did is just plain morally wrong
