From Malaysia here, always nice to hear Pascal share his experience and opinion here. As a coach, I would recommend against 3-wheelers for my students, for the same reasons you stated in the video. However, as a federation official, I strongly support our national skate federation's decision to allow wheels of all sizes in speed category (we do have 2 other categories with wheel size restriction), for the following reason. Coaches should know better if short term (easier medals) or long term gain (competitive on world stage in future) is more important. Technique development is a long game, if someone wants to take a short-cut and end up suffering later, so be it.

For children under the age of 6, I recommend skates with three wheels sized below 84 (sizes 80 to 76 are perfectly suitable), with a softness of 84A( or less), and reaching mid-calf height. The main reason is the weight of the setup; I find that four wheels can become cumbersome for those small legs, which significantly hinders the early development of any skating technique. Softer wheels are preferred to accommodate as many surfaces as possible without the need to switch wheels often, and a mid-calf height helps start developing a neutral stance of feet and ankles without relying on rigid, high-calf boots that also restrict the foot-leg angle. At the ages of 4 to 6, children are barely aware of the edging sensation, but they can become acquainted with it if properly taught. Inside-out edging is important if requested by coaches, yet too many care little or nothing about it.

Well explained. One thing I want to correct here about wheel size allow in India. 90mm wheel is allowed up to 11 Yrs old kid. 100mm wheel can be used by the kids who is more than 11 and less than 14 yrs. And above 14 yrs old kid, they can use 110mm wheel.

Hi Pascal, I got the question lately from a skater aha, thanks for your responses. Do you have an opinion regarding the weight of having 3 wheels or 4 for a kids? It is noticeable and may be interesting for tiny and not very powerful kid?

It’s correct 4 wheels are heavier but in most of the case it’s is still quite light. I prefer they get this « grip feeling » of 4 wheels. Also when it’s light the will maybe lift the skate too much behind with 3 wheels which is not my favorite technique.
