Your Hoyas look great 😊 So nice that almost all of them have flowered! Im waiting on Hoya Australis Lisa to bloom, then all the oldies have flowered (she did make peduncles recently so who knows 😊) Just some notes.. Because many people online say that Hoyas don’t grow fast (for the first year or longer) I purchased a lot of one node cuttings to fill my shelf with, to enjoy staring at, until they would slowly start growing. It turns out they were wrong. Within a year all of those cuttings were in 9-12cm pots and most needed trellises because they grow so fast. They grew so quickly that I actually ran out of space within months. Since then I have learned (also from other growers)… that most Hoyas grow fast (with a few exceptions), if they don’t grow after the first month or 2, something is wrong with the conditions (usually light, warmth, watering/water retention or pests) or with the roots. It makes sense when you think about it.. in nature a plant doesn’t have time to sleep or creep for years, it will get trampled, eaten or otherwise destroyed. I am sorry to contradict what you said, but for me the super fast growth was an overwhelming disaster (I am enjoying it again now but it took months of shuffling things around, adding growing space/lights, buying loads of pots and trellises and uppotting and rehoming plants all the time) (For reference I am in North-West Europe, not in a super warm country or the tropics or anything) I agree with you on not uppotting Hoya just because there are roots on the side of the pot! A reason for me to repot a is when they want water more than twice a week. Ideally for me they need it only once a week, but more than twice a week is too much to keep up with. Sometimes I will change the soil to a more water retentive mix. Another reason would be when they need a trellis, then they get uppotted so that they don’t fall over. Watering.. I so agree on not waiting on wrinkled leaves! Often by the time that happens the roots have dried and sometimes cannot recover -> dry rot. Then the plant has to make new roots and will grow slowly. (Also some hoya are thin leaved, they will just straight out die 😅) It is so much better to just keep an eye in the substrate.. it doesn’t even have to be bone dry.. They are originally often from tropical rain forests, it doesn’t dry out completely there 😊 A tip for when hanging Hoyas with small, still establishing rootsystems fall out of their pots: Velcro under the rim of the nursery pot, and then velcro over the Hoya and attach that to the velcro around the pot (maybe 2-4 strands depending on the weight of the plant) For very small plants strawberry forks/plant pins will also do the trick The velcro/forks can of course be removed after the plant has established its roots a bit more Hoya Rebecca smells so good! (Similarly strong yet different from Hoya Krohniana) (Hoya names change often, the numbers stay the same, if theres a number, you know exactly what you are getting)

Nice Hoya recap video. In high plains, some of my oldest are 5 years old and I agree that potting up for other reasons than pests or bad soil is not advisable. If you think you need to pot up then only slightly or just reposition plant in original container. Also, agree with letting hoyas root out longer before potting up as they do come out of their pots if roots too short. Jumping Hoyas! Hoyas are still my favourite plants!

At 41:01 while showing us the Crimson Princess I see a Peduncle with flowers starting!! You probably knew, I was just like, wait, show us! Haha. I love the flowers. Even when on someone else’s plants! I too was like you. I didn’t think I would EVER like Hoyas. Then, the bug hit me! I do start with the 2-3 leaf cuttings for most of mine. I think I am up to 70’ish. Maybe even close to 80. I need to count. Haha. They are like an addiction. That’s for sure. I so have a handful of larger plants, and they are so, so fun. Thanks for showing us your collection! PS. Love my Rebecca. She sun stresses BEAUTIFULLY! And she has been super fast for me. She is a keeper! I don’t know about the NAP 016. But I do love my Memoria and my Rosita! They are both Beautiful and sun stress gorgeous. Never heard of the 3rd one. I don’t have the Kenejiana, but it looks pretty and I’ve heard they are gorgeous. Plus You like it. Keep it. If it were me, I’d keep that Rebecca and the NAP 016-the second one! (And the Kenejiana-since I don’t have it!) HAHA 😂😂😂

I haven’t watched this all the way through yet, but it inspired me to repot my Hoya compacta variegata into a smaller plastic pot instead of the terracotta it was in. It’s my only Hoya that doesn’t grow. It puts out new leaves and then they die. I even sprayed sulfur on it about a month ago in case it had flat mites!

I have all my hoyas, approx 15+ in Pon Self watering set ups with wicks and I water/fertilise once a week but they only take what they need so sometimes it's not necessary to give them more than a little top up. Makes my life so much easier than trying to figure out the needs for each individual plant. Blooming is my main problem, I've only had one little cluster on my mathilde splash and that's it. So I'm not holding my breath waiting for more just yet seeing as most have only been with me for 18 months to 2 yrs. Thanks for a great video with plenty of interesting information, I've really enjoyed watching.

I don't get chocolate at all from Carnosas (I think I'd like the smell a lot better if it was chocolatey! 😆), but something that I read said that they smell floral, but musty. That really summed it up for me, personally. I didn't think I really liked hoyas, with exception of Carnosa Compacta, until I bought an Australis 'Lisa,' which I call my "gateway hoya." I thought it was so beautiful and easy, so I started looking at them more and more. Now I have around 80! 😬 I prefer them to trail if at all possible, but some just won't have it, so I do have quite a few on trellises. I tend to prefer rounded leaves, but am equal opportunity when it comes to size. There is something really satisfying about a big ol' leaf! Just recently, I started seeing comments that pink vines indicate that the vines will have variegated leaves, while green vines mean that the leaves will be green. I never made that connection before, but am watching out now to see if that's true. It does seem to be the case with one of my Krimson Princesses that wants to throw out an occasional reverted vine. With your preferences, I think you'd really like Heuschkeliana Inner Variegated. Super cute plant. And you really do need Compacta 'Mauna Loa.' It's named after a big volcano in Hawaii. Aloha! 😉

What a mistake. SHE HAD A FIT .I thought she was a gonner dropped leaves i tried to take cutting they would not root . Finally she is giving new growth.I repotted begon ing of summer and put her out on porch when she started to drop leaves. By fall she finally had a few new leaves now . She is trying to fill in. How do you propagate your hoyas and what is your soil mix? Love your wilbur graves.

Your hoyas are beauteous; thanks for showing them today, Drea. Question for you: I understand the concept of evergreen perennials spending their first year establishing roots, etc. but I'm still unclear about an appropriate nutrition regimen as they mature. No matter their stage, are you always feeding w/a balanced NPK? (I searched the transcript to see if you covered this but I might have missed it ... sorry.)
@AlohaPlantLifeАй бұрын
Literally right after I released the video yesterday I had the thought of “I didn’t mention it all what kind of fertilizer I use with them” lol. I use just a balanced in NPK fertilizer like I do for all of my plants and occasionally they get Cal-mag as well, like once every other month.

Not sure if you remember me asking you about wiping leaves and getting a cigarette smoke yellow/orange colour off onto my rag but I am like 99.9% sure that it is flat mites. I see damage on plants and still wipe them down and will find that... yesterday out of sheer laziness I wiped down my giant regal shield alocasia with an unscented babywipe and got a ton of that colour again. For me, it seems to effect my alocasias most. For example that same alocasia has been up against my fiddle leaf fig for a year and the fiddle leaf fig doesn't get that... it's very interesting. My reason for thinking it's flat mites is bc when you google flatmites they are an orangey colour and I'm not getting webbing or having any other signs of pests (knock on wood). I do have a miticide that helps but I don't want to overuse it and make them immune so occasionally I switch it up with peroxide or rubbing alcohol or a baby wipe... It's interesting!!!
@AlohaPlantLifeАй бұрын
OMG!!! You’re likely right! That didn’t even occur to me at the time probably because I hadn’t had to deal with flat mites personally yet

If you need to water the plants too often, and you see a reduction of growth it's need a repot. Air humidity plays a significant role, it should be high enough for the plant to absorb the water

Why are my plants suddenly turning yellow after watering. They did great all summer. Now my tropical are fading off dropping leaves even if they are bone dry when watering.
@AlohaPlantLife23 күн бұрын
Depending on where you live and where your plants are located in your home, it’s likely they’re taking longer to use up the water this time of year then during the summer, so make sure you’re checking to see if they actually need to be watered before watering them and not just watering them after the same number of days that you were during the summer if that makes sense.

I have hoya pubicalyx, parasitica black margin and australis and australis lisa (i put both in one pot to save space). They have all been in self watering with a wick now starting with my pubicalyx (who I just switched to a normal pot bc of her weight tipping her), and man they have all grown HUGE my pubicalyx is 5 feetish long but multiple vines so if you spread her out she goes about ten feet and is SOOO heavy I have no clue what to do with her... obviously a trellis is dwarfed by this and the weight of the leaves makes it want to tip. The Australis pot has a trellis and it's okay for now but that's my newest one and was very tiny and now its filling out, and my black margin is neglected and I have no real clue what she is doing because she hides under all my calatheas but she def seems happy with the self-watering. I will say that I haven't got any flowers yet but I think I only got my first hoya a year ago so I am not really expecting it at this point esp since I did have to repot them all. I know it was a big scary to toss them in self-watering but they were thirsty ALL THE TIME. Once I figure out my pubicalyx I will likely put it back into self-watering bc it did sooo well. I was shocked bc everyone says hoya grows slow but going from like 4 leaves on two vines to being like 10 pounds in a 4 inch pot tells me that whatever I am doing has been right for mine specifically! Perhaps I should consider leaving it out of self-watering if it will slow the growth a little bit? hmmm
@AlohaPlantLifeАй бұрын
Based on the comments on this video, I’m starting to think there might be a correlation between faster growth and self watering pots

It works for me in warm weather. I wash off mealybug-infested plants and stick them outside in the shade and they appear to be pest-free after a few weeks. Maybe it is the natural predators. I wash them again and treat them when I bring them inside for the winter.
