3 Years Later ⇢ What NO ONE told me about BRAID LOCS (What to Expect) | Desiree Marie

Here is what to expect if you have braid locs, are thinking about getting braid locs or are deciding to start your loc journey with braids. This is my experience along with some things I have observed with other people's natural hair journey while growing their locs from time they started their braid locs up to three years into their journey.
Just a little back story: I started my first set of locs with braid locs. My mom installed the Braidlocs in less than an hour (I did not get them done by a loctician). I liked them at first but then realized how it did not agree with how I wanted to grow my dreadlocks. I restarted my loc journey and installed two strand twists shortly after.
(other ways I could have started my locs are with comb coils, palm rolling, back combing however the two strand twist starter loc technique works best for how thick I want my locs to grow.
So the first few months of my braid loc journey I felt uncomfortable. My braids were compact and braided tight. It felt like my locs would grow thin and flat (which I did not want). I was always used to full hair because I wore my hair in wigs, weave, rope braids (and my full natural fro).
However, you CAN expect that your braid locs will stay neat for a longer period of time. Braids stay compact and neat. It enables you to wash your hair for the very first time. The braids will most likely not unravel (even if you have looser texture).
As you wash your braid locs and get into your moisture routine, the hair softens out at the ends and leaves a cute curl! Such a way to effortlessly look great with baby locs as they grow into mature locs.
Braid locs also frizz out gradually. This is a good thing if you are trying to keep your locs neat for a while. However the braid pattern take a while to finally fade into an actual loc.
When you start your locs with braid locs, they are so compact that it might take years to finally look like a loc - there is little space for the natural shedding process to take place. For this reason I enjoyed starting my loc journey with two strand twists because they have the best potential to grow into a full and thick loc.
Braid locs are also easy to style! It as much versatile as starting locs with twists or comb coils. You can curl and do anything.
When it is time to retouch the roots, you can change the braid locs from being "flat" into full by continuing to retwist for the rest of your locs journey. There is also the option is to interlock your braid locs.
