If you turn that 30-06 group 75° to the left, you have an almost identical group to the 308. That, with a nine power scope compared to a 24 power scope and chassis. Excellent shooting. Very impressed. Keep dropping the content for us.

As a retired military guy....now 74 yrs old, Ive shot BOTH (extensively), and its just BULLSHIT thaat there is a nickels difference in both these fine loadings. "COMPETITION" shooting over 500 yards may give a tiny nod to one over the other, however, trying to be "clinical" vs. realistic....gives no great advantage to either. oh, wow.....my ancient 06 dropped 2 inches... BUT instead of a chest strike, I guess my "error" hit him in the liver.....and the exit wound only allowed him to live .03 of a second longer. Please guys get real.

Agree, somewhat. The -06 has some advantages, such as, more powder capacity and range of powder options and preferred bullet weights. But everyone will have their own personal preferences and experiences with each cartridge/rifle combination, including optimal barrel length. Thanks for your comment here.

Hi Dave I watch most of your content and I am a fan. I just have one more contrast to add in respect to heavier bullets, the 308 suffers a lot more in the powder column with longer heavier bullets this what really separates the 30-06 and the .308 not forgetting to mention how the 30-06 can utilize slower burning powders to push the heavies. But if people are happy in that weight class then the .308 is a great cartridge.

My buddy drew a highly coveted elk tag in our state and also happened to receive a new rifle for Father's day. (Good to be him!) Ruger American Gen II 308. So I scoped it up and zeroed it in. It liked CFE223 with 165 Partitions. I notice Hornady goes up to 47.2grs with their bullets for about 2700 fps. Wonder what you could do with those 150 SSTs. If I may say, you look much more at home with your 30-06, 25-06 and your 300 Roy than with your ARs and chassis guns. But they're all fun I 'spose! Thanks Dave!
@davestrohmeyer-saddleupsho80093 ай бұрын
I had to be careful with CFE- 223 with the SST's as the 150 grain projectiles showed very high velocity even at Hornady's listed starting load. But it is accurate.
@luvtahandload76923 ай бұрын
@@davestrohmeyer-saddleupsho8009 yes, speed was good. I used Hornady's data with the Partition. Of course, I started low and whenever I mix bullet makes, I measure the bearing surface of each slug. Easy to do with Hornady's LNL COAL comparator. But when measuring boattail bullets, I also use a hexagonal bullet comparator to put the boattail in. 165 Partition and 165 Hornady Spire Point have bearing surfaces within .005" of each other. I even write the bs length on the box for future use.

With light for the caliber bullets there isn’t much difference at all. However when you get to 200 and 220 bullets it’s no contest the increased powder capacity of the 06 dominates.

I’ve been doing this 308/30-06 dance for over er 40 years. Read articles from experts at nauseam. My own are observations are these. With two identical rifles the difference in terminal ballistics on game is around 70 yards give or take. It’s easier to cheat with the 308. For instance a 22” 30-06 vs a 24” 308 the performance difference are negligible at best. The 308 short action will be fast to cycle, theoretically, and recoil will be noticeable lighter. The 30-06 have better performance with heavier bullets, 180, particularly at longer ranges. The reason don’t have a 30-06 is that if I want a rifle of that size I chose the 7 mag. It’s flatter, kicks about the same and out ranges the 30-06. If I don’t need those capabilities, I have a 308. If I’m under 225 yards, I have the 300 Hamr. It’s good to have options.
@davestrohmeyer-saddleupsho80093 ай бұрын
Agree with all your good observations, the only exception being the 7mm Mag. As I chose the the 300 Mag's instead. I am new to the 300 Ham'r and look forward to testing it's terminal performance soon. Thanks for your comments here and for watching.
@gsitzkowitz3 ай бұрын
@@davestrohmeyer-saddleupsho8009 interestingly enough, the seven mag has a little bit better down range ballistics than the 300 magnum and significantly less recoil. But it is limited to the bullet weight of the 7 mm. Options and trade offs.

The 308 vs 3006 . Whats the differences. About 10 grains of gun powder. That’s it. They shoot the same bullets , use the same powder and primer. Roughly 42 gains for the 308 . Roughly 52 grains for the 3006. The extra 10 grains of powder allows the 3006 to propel the bullet a little faster on the positive side. On the negative side the 3006 kick’s slightly harder , cost a little bit more per shot and reduces barrel life slightly. Thats it no mystery here. If you want more power the the 308 go to the 3006 . If you want more power than the 3006 go to the 300 win mag.
@davestrohmeyer-saddleupsho800921 күн бұрын
No argument here. But slightly better is still better. One caveat though is the 168gn seems to be the bullet of choice in the 308 win. @2,600fps. The 30-06 shoots the 165gn @ 2,850fps. A significant difference indeed. Thanks for watching.
