I always ask the same question: was the 30-06 of the early to mid 20th century an outstanding cartridge for the vast majority of game? If yes, then the modern 308 Win is also an outstanding cartridge for the majority of game. And yes - this does mean the 30-06 has gotten even better.

The man that taught me to reload developed this load for my Browning BAR in 30-06: 46.5gr IMR4895, 165gr HPBT Sierra bullet. The reloading tables show 46.4gr pushing this bullet at V2560 and E 2401 , 46.6gr pushes this bullet at V2570 and E2419 so my load is somewhere in between. Max is 49.7gr with V2800 and E2872. I have taken a lot of whitetails with this load since 1974 and all have been single shot kills and mostly inside of 100 - 200 yards here in SC. One buck I shot facing me at about 100 yds. The bullet hit its right shoulder, traveled down its right side until it hit two ribs, then it angled across its body and we found core and jacket material under the skin on its left hip. The deer went ten feet. One deer dropped in its tracks and didn’t move. I like the combination and it has worked well for me. I have also used 150gr Remington Core-Lok and 180gr Winchester Blacktallon factory ammo with good results. The selling point that caused my dad to buy the BAR in 30-06 was that it can take everything in North America with the right load and bullet placement. If I were to go after Elk, moose, or bear, I would probably use a 200gr bullet of some sort. I have recently started using an AR in .350 Legend using 165gr Hornady bullets. I got interested after reading an article about it in American Rifleman. Most of my hunting is done under 200 yds so the 30-06 might be a bit of overkill so I decided to try the Legend. It has less recoil and now my AR is doing double duty. I still like my BAR and that would be my choice if I ever hunt out west.

That Sierra 165gr hpbt gameking is the most devastating 30 cal bullet I've ever used. My kids and I lovingly refer to it as the "flying cross," or "finger of god." With a muzzle velocity near 3000 fps out of my 24" barrel, I have never had a deer make it more than 15 or 20 yards. Most animals are DRT. And I don't do high shoulder shots. Strictly heart/lung shots with a very rare neck shot on a couple does

Great episode! I chose 30-06 almost 40 years ago, and I am glad I did. I still use that Remington 700 ADL I bought in 1987 at my local Wal-Mart. Although I currently shoot Barnes TTSX instead of Remington Core-Lokt and view through Leupold instead of Tasco, it still shoots well.

15 years really has done a lot, and I disagree with the premise than the .308 is significantly less effective for most elk hunters making shots at ethical ranges (when i see the guys at the shooting range the month before the season missing large targets at 200yrds I wonder what "ethical ranges" actually mean to most people) i don't think most people should be shooting at anything much past ~300yrds simple because so many hunters aren't good shots and don't practice marksmanship enough. I say that as someone who's not an amazing shot, but I've been hunting since i was a kid, and doing long range competitions from field positions I think that's a reasonable given most people can't figure bullet drop past 3-400yrds even with modern loads.

My Bergara Ridge 308 has been a wonderful rifle in all respects. I’ve taken Whitetail, Black Bear and 300+ pound hogs with it using 165 Federal Fusion factory loaded ammo. I grew up hunting whitetails with a Remington 700 in 30-06 and it never failed me either but I found the 308 as you said is just easier to be accurate with.

I wanted to get that out of the way because I'm about to make the Internet hate me. My go to. My end all be all. My one to rule them all. Bergara 308. I shoot Hornady American Whitetail 165gr for everything. Everything. It's cheap. Accurate enough. I practice and hunt with the same stuff so I don't have to change my zero. I understand the limits of my choice and operate within those limits. I have other rifles that I have set up with premium bullets, I almost never use them. They're pretty much the rifles and cartridges I loan out.

That's an outstanding combo. People tend to get too far into the weeds about minutia that is largely irrelevant. Bullet placement is 90% of killing power. An accurate 308 is easy to hit with. Interlocks are good bullets. Once you get that sorted out, be done with it and focus on being a good hunter.

I have long said that the 30-06 and the 308 are "kissing cousins" - same family, same general characteristics, individual differences. The 30-06 is king. Everything you've discussed is quite accurate. However, I don't think you've given the 30-06 it's poper due respect. As a side note, a doctor I once worked with only wanted to know if a gunshot wound was 2000 fps or less. Less than 2000 fps, he had one speed of intervention. More than 2000 fps, he had a much faster speed of response. He was very, very successful in his treatment of gunshot wounds. This tells me that 2000 fps is a "breakover" threshold.

Don't Garands start breaking parts prematurely with full power ammo?
@joearledge
@joearledge 2 ай бұрын
@@harrypeterson9287 Yes, the op-rod specifically. It's a roughly 20" long piece of steel that goes from the gas port(immediately under the front sight) to the bolt. It has multiple bends in it by design, which weakens it. Shoot modern hunting ammo in it and the op-rod will likely bend. The way to get around this is an adjustable gas plug. It's tuned so that the op-rod receives just enough force to run the gun, and all of the excess gas is vented out of the plug. My loads are 165gr doing 2860 fps, so about 100 to150 fps below 30-06 "book max". The gun was designed to originally run on 150gr doing 2750 fps(roughly). So my loads are hotter, but not holy hell hot, and the adjustable gas plug keeps my op-rod safe.

I'm a western hunter and I hunt with both of these cartridges. I started hunting with Barnes bullets three years ago and haven't looked back. They just hit harder. I currently shoot factory ammo for both the 130gr TTSX out of the 308 and the 175gr LRX out of my 30-06. I've been thinking about handloading the 308 with the 175gr LRX for elk since there's no factory option. When I looked at the Barnes reloading manual for both cartridges I was surprised to see that the 308 can be loaded up to 2723fps. That's only about 30fps slower than what I am currently getting that same projectile out of my 30-06. I've always heard the 30-06 is much better than the 308 for larger/longer/heavier projectiles but that doesn't seem to be the case with the 175gr LRX. Even if you handload the 30-06 with the 175gr LRX it isn't doing much more than the 308. Why do you think that is?
@lovacporodjenju4363
@lovacporodjenju4363 3 ай бұрын
Well done sir, someone saw the whole truth. I used just a factory loads just because I am from Europe and because all those gun laws and all that, you can't even so easy get a license in my country for reloading, so because of that I use all factory loads that are a little bit better, but of course for some normal price. I tried some nice Sellier Bellot cheap ammo with 150 grain SPCE and my father used that ammo in his 308, I shoot 30-06 and I must tell you, those both the same bullets work exactly the same, even at gel test they was the same I mean same penetration, so I don't know, but I am not able to see any difference between them. We have some brown bears, but I personally wouldn't take 30-06 over 308 for bear hunting, just because I can have 100 fps more muzzle velocity, that doesn't mean nothing in the praxis, maybe theory, but I don't know, If I would need something stronger I would take maybe 300 Win Mag or something what makes more sence to me. And yes one more thing, I can't really find nothing heavier in my 30-06 than 180 grains, so one more point for the 308 if you ask me...

Nice balanced review. Ruffled my feathers now and then but when i finished listening to what you were saying, I agreed most of the time. I have an opposite story to yours though. I have lost more game with the 30-06 than the 308. It was not due to bullet performance though but due to that one thing you mentioned. Inherent accuracy... PS at 120 yards or less I always go for the brain shot if the animal's angle becomes too acute... Never failed me yet with a 308.

Im gonna say the 06 is more accurate than the 308. Especially when the bullet begins to be have to fight the wind. The 06 velocity is a definite plus. 308 is a dandy shell, but it does nothing better, other than being a short action.

Kind of scratching my head at these numbers. Shooting federal gold medal match 185 berger from my 308 w/ 20” barrel I get 2620 ft/sec. Maybe it’s just a slick bullet. You did make another great point. The bullets in the last 15 years are a factor that can’t be dispensed with, and yet every time a 308/30-06 is compared to a modern cartridge you can bet they stuffed an old bullet in the old cartridge

Great content. The Vetnam Snipers were not happy to get Remington 700 308 cal. Give up their Win Model 70 in 30-06. The Grunts lost the M1 or M14 to the M16 with no foreward assist. But like you said the Military doesn't always buy what it needs. 308 is a long standing favorite in long range shooting. The Navy even rebarreled the M1 Garand to 308. As well did big bore military comp. shooters. Free ammo since we didn't continue the 30-06. Good read "Dead Center". My uncle, his boys (both Frogmen in Nam) and my Grandpa hunted with 30-06 Bolt Guns. 308 gave us the 7-08, 30-06 gave the 270. Thanks for your time.

I am glad that he showed the lineup of bullets, largely because it demonstrates that the copper-alloy Barnes 150grain bullet is physically larger than a lead-core 165. It is closer to the 180. Copper (and the alloys used in bullets) is about 20% less dense than lead, so the bullets are larger than most realize for a given weight. That 150 Barnes is actually a pretty big bullet for a 308.

150 grain bullets can be safely loaded to over 3100 fps in the modern 30-06. That makes a pretty useful load although I agree that the 06 is still at its best with 180-200 grain bullets.

If I wanted a lever action (henry long ranger) or autoloader I'd go with .308. both great cartridges but the 30-06 is more versatile especially with factory ammo. Joseph you're definitely right about the military not always having the best gear. I was deplyed with an FN M16 A2 and my dpms was better quality and my Stage blows it away. The Beretta M9 is horrible in desert environments no matter how clean you keep them and not that accurate either. Military grade means built by the lowest bidder. I disagree with the 308 being more accurate. Specially with the new rifles & new ammo for the 30-06. I think why the 308 is considered more accurate is because of shoot ability( how easy a weapon is to use). 308 is definitely easier to shoot then most 30-06s. Typically 308 is a few pounds lighter, barrels are usually a few inches shorter 20-16 inches, almost 10 bl of recoil less. All that just makes it easier for most people to shoot accurately. But take my Noreen 36x3 long range 30-06 semi auto, gas operated, 22" barrel, with muzzle break, thing will shoot dime sizes to quarter size groups all day off a bipod, at 100-200 yrds. Recoil is hardly noticeable unless shooting from bench with bipod. It's heavy at 9 bl rifle, plus scope, plus bipod & with fully loaded mag of 20 rounds, you're coming in at about 10-11 bls. But it is my hunting rifle( I don't load 20 rounds when hunting, I only load 5 rounds & put the rest of the box in my pack.) 30-06 dominated the shooting sports until late 70s-early 80's, when the NRA unofficially ban it from competitions, sighting things like safety, ranges getting shorter & trying to get more people into competition shooting. To me, it reminds me of when NASCAR officially went to the cooky cutter cars, they have today ,trying to make it far so everyone can join in.

Thanks Joseph. Any feedback on the 175 terminal ascent in each caliber? Also the Norma bond strike? That bullet seemed to shoot well in the Beretta BRX you reviewed. But I still favor the 280 AI!!! But my light rifle is a Kimber in 308 for stand hunting or tracking.

Thanks! The 175-grain Terminal Ascent is outstanding in both cartridges. The .30-06 has an edge with it because the TA is a hybrid-type bullet with a solid rear half, so it's quite long and protrudes down into the .308s powder chamber quite a lot, but it's still very good. As for the BondStrike, I've never shot anything with one. I believe they're a lot like a Nosler AccuBond, so should be pretty darned good.

To the author- first of all the 165 grain is not 2650 standard, the standard is 2700, small difference but still a difference. 180 grain standard is 2620. Again small difference in your statement but still relevant. The point is, in "normal" loads, is not far behind the 3006. In handloads, up to 180, is pushed to and past factory velocities within published loads with powders that maximize the 308. I know the 3006 can be pushed the same. I like both cartridges but I do not like people that misspeak and using it as fact. 100 fps difference is not a big deal up to 180 grains. Honestly is you need heavier then you need to move up in caliber. FYI, with a verified load of Alliant power pro 2000 Mr, 180 grain speer hotcore averages 2700 fps out of my 308 Tikka t3 22", book load, not over pressure.

I'm here just to tell you one thing, the difference between 30-06 and 308 win is almost impossible to see. My father had a 308 win, and I have a 30-06 and with the same factory loads we couldn't see the difference (ammo that we had was usually up to 180 grains, because that is the ammo that you can usually find in the most of hunting stores), if the shot placement is okay, then every animal must go down. I want just to tell all people who read too much ballistic tables and all that, in my land there was a men who killed 3 brown bears in one day and they all died in few steps after shoot, the caliber he used that day was 7.62x39 out his SKS military rifle. Probably PPU 123 grain soft point ammo, but it worked very well for him, cheapest gun and cheapest ammo, probably is that caliber not good for bear hunting, especially today when you have good choice of everything..... That what I am trying to say is, don't read too much, just take your rifle and go out, one thing is theory and another thing is praxis...

Hi Joseph. Great video. Last year I bought a Winchester model 70 Super Grade AAA Maple in 30-06. I've been working up loads for the Barnes 168gr TTSX. The only issue I have with these bullets is the blue polymer tips are not always centered very well. You can see the tip wobble when rolling on a flat surface. Will this effect accuracy?

Once again, before I listen, you have put in the qualifier “for your purposes “. Here are the undisputable facts: The 30-06 is a standard length vs a short action length cartridge for the 308 Winchester. As such the 30-06 has a larger case capacity and therefore, with all other factors being equal can propel the same diameter, same weight bullet faster until some genius comes up with a powder that can make the 308 Winchester safely equal the top velocities of the 30-06 with the heaviest available bullets. The heaviest practical bullet for the 30-06 is the 220 grain round nose. Heaviest practical for the 308 is 180 grain and that could be debated. As things stand, the 30-06 has about a 10% advantage over the 308 in the velocity/energy arena. The short action bolt is supposed to be faster to operate. I suggest that if you put the first shot where it counts, the speed of getting off a second shot really isn’t that important. Short actions are allegedly more accurate because they are stiffer. That’s above my pay grade. Which is better or best is purely subjective. I guess I’ll watch now to see what I forgot or just don’t know.😊

I handload a 165gr Sierra gameking hpbt over a healthy dose of 4350 that I have chronographed a 10 shot string with single digit SD and an average velocity in the mid 2980's fps out of my 24" barrel. The extra case case capacity of the '06 definitely takes an edge over the 308 in this regard. In my 308, I can only get mid 2600 fps with the same bullet. Now, my 308 only has a 22" barrel, so you can add about 75 fps in a best case scenario for that extra 2". Even with that, you're looking at a 200 fps difference. At practical eastern whitetail distances, the difference is negligible. So which one do I choose to take out to the woods with me? A 7mm-08 with a 120gr ballistic tip loaded over a healthy dose of Varget at a shade over 3000 fps.😂

One of the advantages of the 308 is that you can use it in a long action magazine and load some really long bullets. Some of those, like Warner Tool Company's Flat Line bullets, can have BC's as high as .838. Modern hunting bullets also make cartridges much more effective than they were in the past. With their 97%-99% weight retention, monolithic and Federal Terminal Ascent bullets are the equal of much heavier lead-core bullets. E.g. a 168gr bullet of that type would be the equal of a 240gr lead-core bullet, if we assume a 70% weight retention for the lead-core.

If I took a shot against a dear or wild boar at more than 200m (219yrd), I would be kicked out of my hunting team... 90% of my shots are between 70-130 yards. With this, most reasons to have anything faster than a 308 is lost, it is more interesting to think about switching to 6.5 creedmoor or similar to get even less recoil and even better accuracy.

@@michaelwilson9986It’s not hard to understand. Tighter tolerances equate to a more inherently accurate cartridge. That doesn’t mean that a 30-06 isn’t capable of being as accurate, or even more accurate. It just means that collectively, as a whole, the cartridge is more inherently accurate due to its design. It is the same with the new “PRC” cartridges.

It has to do with the accepted specifications. 308 were drawn up tighter. Doesn’t mean the gun and chamber were done correctly, or ammo was loaded constantly. Tons of 30-06 shoot awesome, same with 308. But that is what inherently means, regarding the government submitted specs.
