I own several of both calipers & like them both but the 35 will kill better & hits harder - Plain Ole 200 gr. Core locks will put the Smack down on deer & black bear! 170gr. Core locks for the 30/30 do good but 35 is a thumper - I keep 30-30 in my farm truck everywhere I go & store bought 30-30 is cheap & available everywhere - Got plenty reloading supply for 35 & have stock piled store bought ammo over the years - Really would be nice to see 35 get 1/2 the attention 30/30 gets - 35 Rem is almost an old timers secret & should have far more popularity - Thanks for making video.

The standard factory load for the 35 Remington cartridge is the 200 grain round nose bullet. I bought a Marlin 336 chambered in 35 Remington way back in 1954 when I was sixteen. Very few stores stocked 35 Remington 150 grain loads. Most hunters knew that the 200 grain bullet was by far, the best choice.

During 20 years of shooting 35 remington and brother with a 30, the 150 grain for 35 is the tc round. Pick a speer 180 or Sierra 200 and neck size for that 35 and get the charge right and the comparison stops. I did take a doe in 2000 when I didn't have the equipment and only found a box of 150.

You picked the bullet designed for the 30-30 for both rifles. A fair comparison would be each in their own element. The most common round for the 35 Remington is 200 grain, not 150. Even 180 grain is a lot more common than 150. My 35 has always punched thru and thru even if I got into the shoulder on deer. Not so for my dad's 30-30. I used nothing but 200 and almost exclusively core lokts. I like the books put together, looks like it would take quite a load to lose a bullet.

And from what I read some were it was also John Browning actually came out with the 35 Rem. Then it was Texas ranger Frank Hammer used the 35 Rem to track down Bonnie and Clyde. Sad that this round lost its popularity, from calibers like the 222, 223, 5.56, 243, and now the 6.5 Creedmore etc..... And according to the book Cartridges of the World (which is one of the most reliable books on this ) it says that the 35 Rem has much more knockdown power at any distance then the 30-30 has.

One problem I see with the test which can explain why the 30-30 penetrated deeper is because the encyclopedias were propped up on the board with the 35 shot and they absorbed some of the impact when they where knocked off the board. The 30-30 was shot with the encyclopedias completely resting on the ground and did not absorb as much impact. It would be interesting to see the outcome utilizing 2 different sets of encyclopedias under the same conditions. There could have been more of an air gap between the pages after the first shot causing the 30-30 to penetrate deeper as well. But those are nice guns I love my 1960 Marlin 336 35rem!

Bobby Mitchem I own both .30.30 and the .35. The 35 is more sentimental to me because my grandfather bought it new in 1954 and it was passed down to me. I love the 35 better too. I think that the 30 caliber is one reason it went deeper than the 35 caliber as well as the ballistics for the .30.30 has 2390 muzzle velocity and 1902 foot pounds of muzzle energy. The 35 has 2300 muzzle velocity and 1762 foot pounds of muzzle energy. These numbers tells me that the.30 .30 should have more pen titration than the 35. Danny Landrum we compared apples to apples with the same grain bullet period! If you compare different grain bullets with each other then that isn’t showing the true ballistics of the two bullets. How is that ridiculous?
@blaws66845 жыл бұрын
Danny has a good point. Your test doesn’t take into account the differences in sectional density, which frankly is often overlooked. The SD of the 150 gr bullet 35 rem will reduce penetration significantly compared to the narrower 30-30 round. If you weigh the lead you recovered you’ll find the 35 fragmented a lot more. Also the type and design of the bullets could be a contributing factor if you hadn’t used corelokt for both. That being said , I own both and enjoy shooting them at paper or venison. As suggested a more realistic test would be 180gr 35 vs 150gr. 30-30. If you were comparing a 270 to an 06 you wouldn’t use the same weight bullets right?

@@troyclark100 I thank you for your time putting together the video. However, as a bullet grows in diameter it has to get heavier to retain its penetration. This test was impressive and would steer everyone to a 30-30 because of the results. This test does not help when it comes to hunting deer, black bear or other big game. Many hunters use the 30-30 and harvest deer every season. Most experienced hunters will recommend the 30-30 using 170 grain loads for deer hunting because of the sectional density needed to get through the vitals breaking bone etc. The 150 grain 30-30 load will not have the same results, unfortunately. A good broadside hit to the vitals from a 200 grain .35 Remington will adequately penetrate a large size deer or bear. I prefer the .35 Remington for it’s ability to harvest any big game animal at 150 yards. The 30-30 when loaded with 170 grain is very capable out to 150 yards. If I want 200-275 yards from my rifle. We should have gotten a closer view of the two bullets. In the future we will.
@ingelri25 жыл бұрын
I would be curious to know what the muzzle velocities were on the two different rounds.
@troyclark1005 жыл бұрын
Okay the .30.30 is 2390 muzzle velocity and has 1902 foot pounds of muzzle energy. The 35 is 2300 muzzle velocity and has 1762 foot pounds of muzzle energy on the exact same bullet! Thanks for asking!
@ingelri25 жыл бұрын
So, the extra 90 fps combined with the slightly smaller dismeter bullet explains why the 30-30 penetrated just slightly better than the .35 in your test with the same weight bullet. Your results would probably be closer if you tweaked the .35 load to give you that extra 90 fps. Good comparison, though. I own both so it was interesting to watch.

@@troyclark100 I'm just wondering if Remington no longer makes the 200 grain SJRN bullets for that caliber any more. Making such a .30-30 light bullet,which the .30-30 can fully exploit the potentiel of, for a rifle that was meant to have more killing power utilizing a larger heavier projectile sees to be a real step backwards in their thinking. It was an interesting comparison though for bullets of the same mass and ballistics but different in bullet diameter.

Well that was a surprising outcome.
@steelgila5 жыл бұрын
What was surprising to me was that anyone would produce such a light bullet in the .35 Remington cartridge! It's chief feature is to be able to launch a larger heavier slug in the .30-30 class lever-action calibers. I would expect inferior results in a .35 caliber with the same mass as a .30 caliber. Used to be store bought .35 Rem. ammo started at 200gns and went to 250gns. Now add that to the larger caliber frontal striking zone and you will have a larger caliber version of the .30 caliber with significantly more knock down power(not taking anything away from the .30-30 I have one too and I doubt .35 will kill anything that .30-30 wont.) We should expect to see a larger wound channel with the .35 but greater penetration with the .30. Get some ammo in .35 in the 200gn weight and run that test again. We might see some more intriguing results !

35 has more of a punch I own both your using wrong grain bullet
@campbell01625 жыл бұрын
The 30-30 actually has more punch. I have used both cartridges to kill whitetail in the backwoods of New Brunswick and the 30-30 seems to cause more internal tissue damage then the .35 and in addition to that, every deer i have shot with a 30-30 (170gr bullets) out of a Winchester 94 has dropped in it's tracks dead unlike the .35 the deer will run off about 15 to 20 yards. 30-30 is hands down more powerful using 170 gr pills
@j.rob.59435 жыл бұрын
@@campbell0162 nonsense. A 200 grain bullet flying just as fast as a 30-30 170 grainer will outperform the 170 every single time. Just physics.
@campbell01625 жыл бұрын
@@j.rob.5943 very incorrect statement. The 30-30 is a lighter, thus faster bullet travelling around 1390 fps, where as a 200 gr .35 rem is only going 2080 fps. The .35 might leave a slightly bigger hole, but the 30-30 exits almost everytime I've shot deer, even after hitting bones

I'm eye balling a 35 rem , and a 35 whelen , and a 30-06 all have their up's and downs . I'm kinda wanting to go with the Whelen since the sky is the limit as far as critters go . It can be used for everything . People say the same for the other 2 , but it's not true, I'd like to compliment ya'll , I don't think it could be much fairer then that demonstration . And remember bad comments are good too. Peace..

35 without watching the video...its not close
@musiq045 жыл бұрын
The video says different, The 30-30 had much better penetration than the 35 due to the smaller bullet diameter and had more energy as well. Theres no arugement with the facts shown in the video.

@@musiq04 crazy...i dont believe everything in videos. 35 is far superior to 30-30 ballistically. Look it up....30-30 old and everyone's dad or grand-dad had one. Really just a ok round and needs to stay inside 100 yards.

@@ghunt09, upon further investigation, I discovered that the ballistics were as follows; .30.30 is 2390 muzzle velocity and has 1902 foot pounds of muzzle energy. @Jacob Roy its an issue of sectional density... try the traditional load in 35 i.e. the 200gr bullet and it'd be a different story... deal with that

They are probably more similar than we would like to admit. There is no advantage on deer size animals since deer are so ridiculously easy to cleanly kill with about anything. On heavier than deer size game the .35 with 200 grain bullets would intuitively seem to be the better of the two when comparing conventional bullets 170 grain .30 vs 200 grain .35s....but there are so many minor variables up, down, and sideways that can tweak the terminal results. If stuck with factory loaded ammunition, it's pretty obvious that the .30-30 has been refined and developed far beyond the ammo available for the .35. Probably an unfair technological developmental advantage to the .30-30 no matter what point or performance criteria you were attempting to demonstrate or prove. The .35 is probably best with the 200 grain bullet as opposed to the 150. It's pretty impossible to not get picture perfect bullet performance with such a bullet at the speeds it runs. Much the same can be said of the 170 grain .30-30 bullet. You run out of bullet destroying velocity long before you run out of bullet. As for the lighter 150s in either cartridge, the 150 grain ..30-30 bullet will very likely show significant superiority over the 150 grain .35 due to sectional density and ballistic coefficients alone. It would be VERY interesting to see maximum performance handloads between the .30-30 and .35 tested. The Speer Hot Core 170 grain .30 vs the Speer 180 grain Hot Core .35 is a test I would love to see.

Yeah the 35 is a great caliber and is extremely effective. The only thing we are saying was that our results suggested that the 30- 30 has the advantage between the two. That is not to say that they are not both good calibers.Thanks for watching!

Thanks for your comment. Not many of us can say we have the experience of serious North American big game hunting like that and ultimately it's the hunter who has sampled different calibers in the field who has the last word in the matter and if we're smart we will defer to his experience.
