A Tale of Two Marlins: Shooting The Marlin 336, .35 Remington Vs. .30-30 Winchester

Shooting and comparing two examples of my favorite lever gun in two of America's favorite classic chamberings.

I bought a 336 in 35 Rem when I was 15 and still carry it today, that’s 45 years, great gun. Every deer and one bear hit never went more than a few feet.

I've had the same experience with my 35. one bear ran 30 yards and is the furthest any deer or bear ever went.

Mine's much older, I have my grandfather's 1951 Marlin 336 22" rifle, not micro-groove rifling, in .35 Remington. I'm now 74 yo and I have hunted with it all over the world, taking down Big Horn, Elk, Grisley Bear in Canada, Black bear and Moose in Wisconsin and Michigan, Cougar and Wolf in Western USA, Javalina in Arizona, Russian Blue Boar in Monterrey CA, Elk in Poland, Jaguar in Mexico and too much more to cite. I did install a weaver rail in the receiver for several scoops I use based on the game and range I anticipate to hunt. Of all the 30 hunting rifles I own, I love the Marlin .35 Rem the most still.

I purchased a Marlin 336CS in the 35 Rem back in 1997. Harvested many deer in WV and Pennsylvania with one shot. Hard to find ammo in 35 Rem sometimes but a very nice rifle.

I love lever guns ever since trying one belonging to a friend’s dad years ago. It’s not easy finding a new one at a good price here in England. Eventually I gave up on price and just bought a Winchester/Miroku. It’s wonderful and points as well as my century old side by side 12 bore. I’d love to try the new Marlin/Rugers for comparison. I followed the demise of Marlin and the quality issues prior to the takeover with great interest. There’s something about a lever gun. It makes me smile - as it has done all those I’ve let try it. It’s as warm and comforting as an open fire. Thanks for the in depth video.

I have used my dad's 35 rem most my life, and have lost count of the deer we both have killed with it, back when white tail were BIG. My mother handed it to me after he died and wanted me to have it. It goes to my grandson! If it's all you ever shot you really don't think about the recoil... I think I was 14 when he got it.

I've never had to hunt a deer after a 35 hit. They just drop, it's such a wide nose on the round that it has the delivery of a wrecking ball through a plate glass window. They work great for black bears too.

Should try using federal .35 200 grain my first deer i shot was with that bullet and my marlin 336 and well bullet hit rib cage and just exploded

@@steveroush4147 It sits dead in that sweet spot between the speed of a 30 cal and the mass of a 40 cal round. With a win 200 gr silvertip large black bear or a small brown are no problem. Just loads of energy and speed.

For Christmas 93 or 94 my Dad gave me a new 336 CS 30-30. I’m 44 now and had never really been a hunter… I’ve shot it, but it was mostly a case queen. Manufactured in 93 is almost brand new still !Living in Maine and owning that beautiful rifle, I will definitely will out there in a few weeks!!

I own a Marlin 336 CS made in the 80’s and at first was skeptical of the cross bolt safety. However over the years I have changed my mind. Now I think the cross bolt safety was a great addition. Most accidental discharges with a lever action occur when loading and unloading the firearm. I engage the safety when loading and unloading and the threat of an accidental discharge is eliminated. I don’t use the safety when I’m actually hunting, relying on the half cock safety instead. I know there will be some who say if you know what you’re doing you won’t have an accidental discharge, well maybe. However a lot of young hunters start out deer hunting with a lever action rifle and if the rifle can be made safer then I’m all for that.

Im just seeing this on 10/04/23. I like your range . I was stationed in Brunswick Maine in the late seventies and early eighties. I harvested my first Whitetail using a 30/30 Winchester model 94. I recently purchased a Marlin model 336 in 35 Remington.I haven't hunted with it yet.

I grew up in PA, and my whole family shot 35 Remingtons. We still use them during deer season in both PA and WV. I load the Speer 180 gr as my favorite load in the 35 Remington. I also load the 220 gr Speer. That one is a thumper for a little larger game. So for the 35 Remington the 3 best bullets are the 180 gr, 200 gr, and 220 gr.

@@jwgbmp40 do not try to use a spitzer style bullet in a tube magazine. Speer makes a 180 grain flat nose bullet that works fine in tube magazines.

?@@jwgbmp40 - no they are not spire points - the 180 and 220 are flat pointed CCI bullets and the 200s are all round nosed - only Remington made the 150grain spire pointed - and if you looked at the Model 14 and 141 they were made for - you'd see why - the tubular magazine on the Remington pumps have a unique barber pole spiral to them - not for the cosmetics - you can shoot spire pointed ammo in them safely as that spiral keeps pointed bullets from hitting the primer on the bullets in front of them - as far as I'm aware - that was the only .35 made that way - the model 14 and 141 carbines in particular were well made and are fun guns to shoot - classic firearms.

Wonderful video- thank you for posting. Shot my first deer in the 70s with a like new 336 (thutty thutty) that was from the late 50s or early 60s. My Dad had somehow acquired it in a gun deal, but it sat for years in the gun closet unused and I was always fascinated by it when I was little . It was a no brainer for my first deer rifle. After that first deer, I moved on to "better" guns, and "better" cartridges, but as I've aged - like you say--what would I rather spend the day in the woods with? Stainless steel and plastic ? Not anymore. Cherished memories of that first Deer, and the hunt I shared with my family on that day (and many others). The 336 is a fantastic tool and how I long for those simpler days of my youth.

I have a 1971 vintage 336 in .35 Remington. I've taken many deer with it. I used handloads with 180 grain Speer bullets. Amazingly accurate rifle for a lever gun, rivaling a good bolt action. Mine has a 2-3/4X scope on it. Love it!

I also use the 180 gr. Speer flat nose. I use the Hodgdon reloading data which can be found on-line for 180 gr., 200 and 220 gr. bullets. I've been hitting the 300 yard silhouette with the 180 gr. by using a holdover around 12 inches. I love the .35 Remington.

I have shot a lot of deer with my Marlin 336 in .35 Remington. And most dropped relatively fast. Mine was also made in ‘83 and as far as I’m concerned it’s a classic. I agree that the .35 is a better option than 30-30 if you’re hunting in black bear country. Here in upstate NY, our deer and bear season run concurrently so .35 Remington makes a great choice. Fun fact: .35 Remington was initially made for the Remington Model 8 (aka Remington Autoloading Rifle). That rifle/cartridge combo was used by Texas Ranger Frank Hamer and other officers during final shootout with Bonnie & Clyde.

One of the moonshiners on TV uses a Marlin 336 in the 35 Rem. He is a very proficient hunter. One of the Last Alaskans used an old lever gun in 35 Rem. He was shooting moose with it.

Great video! The 35 Remington is very popular in Pennsylvania deer/bear camps. Also... I definitely know that the 30-30 Winchester has dropped more whitetail over the years than any other caliber. The 30-06 Springfield is a close second. In today's world these two tools have zero glitz and shine... however... they flat out work! I also topped my 30-30 Winchester 94 with the Williams peep sight. I love shooting it! The grandkids are just turning 10 this year and I feel it'll make a fine 1st rifle for one of them.

Indeed. I had been looking for a .35 for several years, mostly because there are at least two others in our PA bear camp. I don’t go to deer camp much anymore. It’s getting a bit too crowded and I figure I should give the youngsters a chance to hunt. But I still like to go to bear camp every year. I can’t think of a much better choice for one of your grandkids than that .30-30. Thanks for the positive feedback!

The .35 Rem is definitely popular in PA. I own one! Beastly gun. I use a 200 grain bullet. It can blast through thick brush. I've taken whitetail and blackbears. I never had to track my game down. .35 Rem with 200 grain bullet drops them on the spot!!

Had a 336 passed down to me when I was 14. I’m 26 now and I’ve never shot a deer with it. The older I get the more interested I become in the older rifles. Might have to take it out and see what it can do. Might give the 25-06 a well needed break.

My brother was a big fan of the 35 rem. And he always shot the .180 gr! The recoil between the 35 with 180 gr and the 30-30 with 170 gr recoiled almost the same according to him! I tried them myself and really couldn't tell the difference either except for the report of gun. 35 rem had a sharper bark to it

I had that gun in both 30-30 and 35 Remington also. I used to reload the 35 Remington with 180 gr Speer Grand Slam bullets pushed by IMR 3031. I think I was just under 40 grains. California went to non-lead bullets for hunting so I sent it to my nephew back east due to no factory ammo with non-lead bullets.

Love both calibers but the 35 has my vote I have guided 5 new hunters to their first deer with a Marlin 336 in 35 Remington (but with a 150 gr load for kids). I use an XS rail system to help get proper eye relief for different size shooters. Thank you for video.

Good video. I was born and raised in the west where the .35 Rem isn't a popular round, and you educated me as to it's popularity in other regions. Some of the comments below resoundingly confirmed it's popularity. I'm a big Marlin fan, and have a good number of them from the 70s-early 80s era in .22 (39A) to .45-70 (1895) and a variety of calibers in between. As far as semi-buckhorn sights go, in my opinion Marlin nailed it with the fold down version they switched to somewhere in the early 70s. For me they line up very well, while leaving you a good sight picture. It was a big improvement over the one piece sight they used previously. Being old school, I still prefer them without the cross-bolt safety. I have used them, and I must admit that they have their place when unloading the gun. If someone has a post-mid-'83 model with one and would like to remove it, they can order a "safety delete" from Bear Tooth Mercantile for around $20 when they have them in stock (they sell out quickly). It's simply a blank filler with a dummy slotted screw head on either side. They look quite good, actually. They even have a model with a saddle ring on one side if you like it. None of mine have a cross-bolt safety, but I've installed a number of standard and saddle ring models on friends' rifles. I have owned 2 Marlins in the .35 caliber and cannot understand why I got rid of either of them. But 5 yrs. ago, I decided I wanted another one. I looked around various dealers and in the process, I ran across a man that had just bought a Marlin 336 in the 30-30 and something had come up where he needed cash more than he needed the rifle. He offered it to me for a very good price and I bought it. After killing a deer with it every year since I bought it (all being one shot, drop in their tracks kills), I do not regret it at all. Especially when I found out how much of a price difference there was on ammo lately. One of the guys on my hunting lease has a .35 and needed ammo. He was having problems finding anything in the .35. I actually found some for him and they were $57 per box. That same day, at that same place, I bought some 30-30 ammo for $27 a box. As of today, I just looked on line and the .35 ammo is still up around $50 per box. I have decided to stick with my 30-30. Easier to find ammo, and much less expensive...and still gets the job done.

Most people will read that in Lyman Cast Bullet manuals and it clearly states 35 Remington cast bullets must be kept below 1600fps or accuracy will suffer with microgroove barrels - then they go on to say cast bullets must be sized to the bore diameter - and thats the problem. My Marlin slugged at .3585 and I size the bullets to .360. I challenge anyone to slug the bore, then size one to two thousandth over bore diameter and tell me you cant get great cast bullet accuracy. Not only that, but with PCd bullets at 140gr (Saeco #383 sized to .360) I chrono'd great accuracy at 50yds (longest shot available) at 2450fps and that was not even a max load

I owned a 35 back in the 80s, sold it and regretted it ever since. We lived in the country and used pie plates for targets.At 100 yds I set the plate on the bead and hit always near the center. At 200 yds just covered the plate and same thing. A real shooter!

I had some very old factory .35 Remington cartridges. Some had split case necks after they were discharged. Worse, some hang fired. I eventually pulled the bullets on what I had left and trashed the other components. For 200 grain handloads I favour 31 grains of Reloder 7. For 158 grain .357 diameter hollow points, I use 35 grains of Reloder 7. The latter is the cheaper load because I can buy jacketed handgun bullets for much less money and the ones that I use are just as accurate. With plenty of time and preferably a rest, I am quite confident in either load for deer up to 200 yards.

Always called my C.35 a thumper, lol. My side gate can be a little tight with the 200 grainers but the action is slick as butter. See thru mounts with a bushnell. Need to shoot it. I've heard you can stack ballistic tips in the tube but I don't trust it yet. I am a big fan of psp's but not in this rig. Thanks for the video. A friend and I were comparing the two calibers the other day.

I’ve hunted with 308, 30-06, and 35 Remington. The 35 is, hands down my favorite. As for recoil, I can’t say that I’ve ever even noticed recoil when hunting. It is a very forgiving round. I’ve only ever “hit” one deer that it didn’t drop. A friend dropped it within a few minutes. Apparently, going for a between the eyes shot at about 140 yards, I only creased the top of its head.

All the Fed. and Rem. factory ammo I’ve shot in my Marlin 35 Rem was pretty tame, with the Hornady having a little more thump. So my guess is those were hand loads. I don’t, though, so I’m thankful that Hornady still makes ammo for it, because it really is my favorite deer rifle. Remington hasn’t in quite a while but is it really still Remington? Federal hasn’t gotten back to making it either but I’m looking forward to trying some Winchester I just ordered from AE Ammo. The 2-7x33mm Redfield has been on mine for several years now but I’m stoked about sighting it in once again but topped with the new 1.5-4x 20mm Leupold compact my wife just got me!

I believe the the cross bolt safety is a benefit when unloading the rifle. Usually, with a lever action the action is cycled to unload since unloading through the loading gate is extremely problematic. That means that live rounds are being chambered and extracted. Is there a danger of an accidental discharge during that evolution? Very remote, but possible. The cross bolt safety when actuated prohibits that possibility.

i just bought my first lever action 30-30 a 336 clone {marlin glenfield 30A ) ive owned guns since 1965 my brush gun was always was a Ruger .44 magnum carbine which i would never part with i come from a long line of gun lovers and until a month ago i had never even held one the 30-30`s were always cheap in price and everybody had one i`m not a band wagon guy so never had any interest in one {my bad} i had noticed the price sky rocketing on them then one came my way for my way for 300.00 then couldnt find any ammo a friend gave me a box and i got to finally shoot a 30-30 wow cant believe i missed out on this marvel for all these years its now one of my favorites

I have a '77 in 30-30 and my Dad's 1953 in 35 Remington. To me the 30-30 has more of a sharp kick and the 35 is like a heavy shove/kick. Hard to explain LOL. Both guns LOVE the Hornady Lever ammo. Especially 35. I've done 3 shots touching at 100 yards with the 35 quite a few times.

If you like a gun that happens to have one, you can order a "safety delete" from Bear Tooth Mercantile when they have them in stock. It looks like a slotted screw head on either side, and I've installed a number of them for friends with post-'83 rifles. beartoothmercantile.com/basic-safety-delete-for-marlin-rifle/ I'm a huge Marlin fan, and mine are all 70s-early 80s era models without the dreaded cross-bolt safety.

Great video! I'm glad you were honest about the recoil Most message boards and videos say, "Oh it kicks the same as my old 30-30. A kid could shoot it!" After years of hunting with an old Western Field (Marlin) 30-30 lever action, I happened upon a beautiful 1976 model Marlin 336 in .35 Remington last year, and purchased it. I, too, was surprised at the recoil difference between it and my 30-30. It had no recoil pad, so I added a slip-on Limb Saver recoil pad, and that helped. I was also shooting the LeverEvolution bullets, so I'm wondering if it would recoil less with he Remington 200 gr? Hopefully, ammo will become available one day, and I can try different rounds. I'm still hoping to have success with it this season in the Mississippi deer woods!

Actually I've fired both and still have hundreds of LE rounds - but the hornady rounds had less recoil than the 200 grain Corelokt - though neither one was in the same class as my .358 Winchester or .35 Whelen or the 444 Marlin - I had gone to reloading and also have hundreds of the CCI 180 grain flat-nosed - which seemed to offer the best performance on deer - can't say as though I ever found the .35 Remington recoil at all daunting in any format - stouter than the .30-30 - but that isn't really saying much.

Crossbolt safety is also beneficial (in my opinion) when unloading the entire magazine by cycling every round through the chamber , kinda a nice safety feature if you don’t want to take each round back out of the magazine the way it went in... I know it can be done because I have tried it just to satisfy my curiosity but it’s kinda a pita.

I only bought the 30-30 because of it being an easy round to find. Even before Covid the 35 rem was here and there. Now I feel the 35 has fallen into the category of a mythical round. I haven't heard or seen anyone buying 35 Remington rounds. I've always wanted an lever action rifle. 30-30 was and is the most popular caliber in that action. That's what I went with. I'm not disappointed. To be honest I've taken the longest shot out of my hunting party. That has 3 other shooters with the 35 rem. We all have dropped deer in they're tracks on a dead run if not within 40 yards they expire.

35 Rem mythical? That’s what a couple of gun/ammo makers that would have you believe that so they can sale you. I’m far from being the only guy still toting it that has had more whitetails drop in their tracks from it than all our other rifles combined. You need to read the comments here. As for getting ammo, thankfully we can order online, although my favorite store had Hornady last time I was there. Winchester also made some 35 Rem this year and I just got a couple of boxes from AE Ammo. Hopefully Federal will get back to making it as well because the cartridge has really proven to be optimum in the Marlin as a woods gun because it has a little more knockdown than the very capable 30/30 (and a lot more than pistol cartridges) but lacks the recoil of the .444 or larger big bores.

@davidrussell631 Remington no longer makes 35rem along with 30/40 kreg. I'd have to look to see if Winchester and Federal still makes 35rem. I haven't seen them in years. I know Hornady makes 35rem. I actually inherited my grandfather's Marlin 336 in .35rem right after my original comment. I also picked up a couple of Henry's as well. 45 colt and 357mag.

@joeellis2692 you’re correct. Remington hasn’t made 35rem in quite a while but what should we expect? As for Federal, Midway USA’s site says the long anticipated 35rem 220 gr in the new Federal Premium Hammerdown line is coming soon. If you give them your email they’ll notify you when they’re available ($50 box) if you click on “Notify Me”. As I said, though, Winchester made a run this year and last I checked AE ammo still had em. I just bought a couple of boxes from them but thankfully I was stocked up on ammo for my Marlin back before the world went nuts in 2020, mainly Hornady and Federal when they were still selling it in their cheap line. My precious wife just got me a new Leupold 1.5-4x20 compact scope that I’m downsizing to and so I can’t wait to go to the range! Which of those pistol cartridge Henry’s do you like the best?

I was made in 1951 and so was my 336 SC . No need for a crossbolt safety, that's what hammer extensions were made for. I love my 35 it drops deer where they stand if you do your part! Ammo is difficult to locate and expensive when you do. I have a quantity of new cases and reload for mine. I always have used receiver sights in conjunction with a nice lyman Ivory bead front sight. But as I have grown older I gave in and added a 2x7 Redfield that I generally leave set on 3. Wish they could make em as high a quality nowadays!

I love the .35 Rem. It is a STOPPER. Yes, in the relatively light lever actions, the recoil is a bit stout. But in the heavy old Remington Model 8 semi-auto for which the cartridge was originally designed, it's a sweetheart...barely any kick to it at all.

Both neat cartridges but if you want to extend your hunting killing distance, get a marlin 336ER in 356win. It’s a 250+yd whitetail deer cartridge. Handloading in the 356, try a Speer 180gr FN or the newer Fury 220gr FN.

If your a reloader LeverEvolution Powder takes the .35 REM to a whole new level. Don’t use flex tips. This powder works well in 3030.

@@talisikid1618 Flex Tips have a elongated body which encroaches on powder capacity. You are taking up space in the case . This results in reduced powder charges and lower velocities. Hornady, Sierra, regular round nose projectiles allow more powder as the body of the bullet is shorter .This results in higher velocities. If you have a Hornady Manual just look at the pictures of the .35 projectiles and do a visual comparison. Also myself and friends have had feeding issues with Flex Tips especially in older rifles. Another reason why I don’t trust them. I used Remington Core Lock for years .Try and find them. Good Luck and thanks for the enquiry.

@LeverAction Gypsy thanks for all the info. I have been toying with the idea of making up some .357-equivalent loads for the .35 Remington. I’ve got plenty of .357 pistol bullets and I noticed that the 336 in .35 has the same 1:16” twist as the 1894c in .357. Should be a cool experiment.

My 336 from 1978 only likes 200gr of any majoranufacturer. I have only tried a few 150gr stuff and it's all over the place. With the 200gr Win and Fed loads the first 2 shots usually touch and the 3rs shot will finally have some vertical stringing unless I let it cool between shots. I am sure if it were possible to float the barrell, it would do better, but that ain't gonna happen with tube feed. About half the time the first 2 shots are in the same hole, but just can never get that 3rd one to cooperate. And all this is with an old Bushnell 3-9x. My Dad has an old Remington 742 and that thing does the same thing. 2 shots in same hole then 3rd shot will be high or low too. Everything I have seems to like Federal ammo except for one and it loves Hornady.

My Marlin is a 336W. It came factory with a 3-9x32 scope and has no cross bolt safety. Purchased used in 1983. Most of the deer taken over the years were a one shot season.

But I think I developed a flinch from that gun. Dad bought me my own gun, Browning BLR .308, for graduating high school. Looking to by my own 35.

I have a 30-30 Winchester M94 and a 35 Remington 336. both with 4x scopes. I hand load for both of them, 170 grain for the 30-30 and 180 grain for the 35 Remington. I hunt central Florida for deer and hog and never do worry about coming across a black bear. Both rifles seem to have the same point of impact at 50,100 and 200 yards so no matter which rifle I pick up I feel safe and totally at home in the woods.
