A 1898 NRA carbine was the first center fire rifle I ever shot.Wonderful rifle! Took my biggest buck ever with it in 1986 I think. The carbines that TR ' s Rough Riders carried were built that way at the arsenal aand have sights calibrated for the shorter barrel. TR and some of his officers, though, took 1895 Winchester lever guns in 30 Army(30-40 Krag) that they purchased themselves. Loaded with 180 gr bullets it is the equal of the .303 British and .300 Savage!

I have one of the Carbines and I love mine as well. In fact, it was the first rifle that was truly mine. My neighbor, who was a machinist in his 80’s from Cleveland Ohio sold it to me when I was 9 years old for 100 bucks. That was in the early 90’s. I’m 41 now and had no idea when he sold it to me how special it was.
