Pine beetle. Sadly this has been a no so insignificant factor in western Canadian forest for over 2 decades. A major contributor to the fuel (dead trees) in many of the fires in western Canada. Unfortunately with Jasper being in a park, parks Canada was reticent to allow forestry and lumber producers in to take the dead wood out. Major fires like this one, become uncontrollable with all that dead dry wood around them. So yes there was a call to clear the dead trees and not enough was done to help prevent a fire like this.

If I were a resident I would be asking why no fire break around the town and why not remove all pine beetle and fire damaged trees. Jasper survived a fire two years ago and no mitigation done. This could have been avoided. Three levels of government failed jasper
@fattymcbastard65362 ай бұрын
Because Jasper is within the national park. The purpose of a park is to preserve it in its natural state. The destruction of forests by pine beetle are natural phenomena, as are the fires that consume the dead trees. It's a tough pill to swallow, but that's what you're signing up for whenever promoting for new parks to protect the natural ecosystem.

@sanniepstein48352 ай бұрын
I don't know about Jasper, but some misguided Americans consider metal roofs not chi-chi enough, associating them with industry or poverty.
@madJesterful2 ай бұрын
well, most of the roofs are actual tar and asphalt shingles and are not what burns that house down. Few if any buildings have cedar shingle walls. cedar shingle roofs are a thing but its getting rare for obvious reasons. What lights up the house is the cedar hedge that runs all the way up to the structure or that 30ft burning pine tree that lands on the house. But in terms of why we don't commonly use metal, which is better, its not generally an upgrade where the owner get the extra cost on sale.

@@archie_bunker Nope. CO2 over 300 ppm does not have the carrying capacity to effect temperature in ANY way. Other gasses do, but almost 100% of those come from forest fires and eruptions. Even if people decided to start making those, the amount spewed by a single major underwater volcano would dwarf what we can make. So the current lies about CO2 driving anything are exactly that. Just a loose correlation passed off as causation for money and power, as usual. Compare the 2020 "wildfires" since that was the year we were all locked down, and see if you can spot that ~75% of these fires are man-made.

Seems pretty suspicious that Jasper goes up in flames the first summer after the TMEP pipeline was completed. It's suspicious because for over a decade the pine beetle decimated hundreds of thousands if not millions of hectares of pine trees in the park causing them to die and dry out all around Jasper and the park. For the last three of those 10 plus years, there was a huge pipeline project being built in and around Jasper that involved lots of high-risk ignition sources like welding, cutting, heavy equipment, smoking outside designated areas etc and there were hot summers all through that region during construction as well. But yet, there wasn't any mentioning of forest fires that posed a threat to Jasper during that time and/or before. Then all of a sudden, two forest fires start on the opposing sides of the town and take half it out. Something doesn't feel quite right here. Pretty easy to tell if it was lightning or not. I hope Danielle Smith looks hard into this one ... As Alberta has in the recent past, caught people deliberately lighting these fires! From time-to-time people make mistakes which can lead to fires and that's bad enough. However, when individuals or groups deliberately cause trouble that put people, communities and resources in harm's way and do so out of profit, power and or from some wacked out belief, then they need to be delt with harshly!

Don't firefighters get in big doodoo for taking pictures of burned areas?
@robertcowie82302 ай бұрын
Canada forests are a sustainable resource though they only replant one type of tree , trees that are slower to catch fire or act as a fire break are not planted there’s no diversity in the forest thus you wonder why there’s so many forest fires , again it’s a resource it’s about $ for the lumber industry yet it’s never discussed in the media why? As with all industries , they influence political parties , they set up their own environmental groups etc

They should transform it into a Garry Oak woodland kind of forest. That is becoming more rare in BC.

Water bombers are completely useless in big fires like this, the water would vapourize before it got anywhere close to the ground.

Fires don't start themselves. No lightning so how did the fires start 🤔

Actually, fires can start by themselves - more accurately, a combination of hot-dry weather and decaying organic matter can cause intense heat buildup and spark spontaneous combustion. Or, sometimes, you'll get sunlight being refracted by left behind garbage (such as glass bottles, starting a small flame. It's why a bunch of tree and plant species have adaptations revolving around resisting or spreading during wildfires. Even before humans, wildfires were something forests had to deal with every decade or so at minimum.

Lightening strikes cause a lot of fires. You can get spontaneous burns in very dry conditions and heat waves

@@MegaTcarr you could tell the forests are tinder boxes. Dry as can be zero moisture.

Canada should really up its fire break zones. Wild fires happened again and again, the best way to protect the forest is to protect it from wild fire

Are you literally questioning the fact that vinyl siding will burn at a lower temperature than living trees? You sound like the kind of person that would see a burned church but an intact metal cross and describe it as "divine" and NOT a difference in burning temperatures.

In 2023, the Alberta provincial government was granted considerably more funds to fight the 2024 fire fighting season. Instead, tens of millions of dollars were cut from the provincial budget, including the aerial elite team, along with a number of watch posts and firefighting training. I have been a victim of conservative cuts in the past. This time it was Jasper. The first thing the provincial government did was call on Trudeau. The conservatives don't believe in global warming. The only thing that conservatives believe in his cutting necessary supports to its citizens and bragging about how much of the taxpayers' money they have stuffed in the bank.

I’ve been thinking a lot about the recent floods, wildfires, and the turmoil in the world. I believe these aren’t just coincidences; they’re consequences of turning away from God and disobeying His commands. The rise of sinful behaviors, including homosexuality, and changing genders are a serious matters. We really need to reflect on this and understand that there will be consequences for our actions. It’s crucial for everyone to return to God and seek forgiveness as soon as possible. Take care.
