#30 After 1 Year Building This...

After one year building in our Portuguese property, we think it is time to go.This week we work on finishing many open projects we had still to finish on the interior of the Cabin. Getting everything ready for the bathroom, shower and solar panels. Still cannot believe that we were able to build our house for $5000.

Finish the cosmetics first! If you don't, you'll never do it. When we moved into our new house two years ago I planned on painting my office space and up to now I'm sitting here staring at purple stains that seep through the white kalk someone threw on the walls a century ago. It's my only regret. But a BIG one, ha ha. Apart from that: LOVE the final result of your build. It's truly an inspiration.

We are so over-regulated in Australia. We're simply not permitted to install fixtures, water heating, electrics ourselves. Everything MUST be done by a licensed, paid trades person. It's expensive and disheartening. It's such a joy to witness your journey and your freedoms. Bless you both.

mostly the same in germany but we are allowed to do everything by ourselves but it has to be checked and approved by a professional after we do it. So they certify that we did it right in a way when we do it on our own. To be honest i think thats fine.

The same here in Sweden. just look at what happened during the pandemic, to know what australia is like.

we werent even allowed to buy lumbar from local mills and use in construction here - and the "stamped, approved" lumbar u could buy is terrrrrible. they only recently approved home milled lumbar for rural construction. nothing urban or with town water/sewage though. we can do the trades ourselves with permits and inspections though. just not the electrical panel, it needs a licensed electricion signature that they hooked it up.

@Chris Maglione Your mentality is why basic housing is so unreachable for many right now. There should always be a way for people to buy land and build their own home (withing a certain size limit), its not rocket science, yes everything should be properly inspected, and maybe there could be a special title given to such homes to let buyers know but this is how people lived for ages, its insane what overregulation has brough us to.

Yes ... holidays are an interesting and important part when you are working hard! I agree that the detail finishing needs some attention, otherwise it keeps on being put off by major works and construction. I am renovating an older house approx 2 hours West of Sydney. I look around at a few things that are 'half done' ... and get distracted again. I think it i simportant that you have someone that is working with you and encouraging you ... doing projects like this on your own are extremely challenging and limited. I look at your project as motivation for a 'sea change' to a larger property. Love the 'window' into what you have done and how you have met challenges ... and love the accents :)

Several years ago we had Yellow Jacket wasps build a nest in our chimney during the summer. when we started our first fire in the fall, the smoke backed up into the house and the wasps were very angry. It's always good to check the chimney if it has been unused for awhile.

You can put up birds nests all over your property. It would be cool for birds to flock in your property as a refuge. Maybe some water fountains. You don't have to worry about pests and nasty insects.
