Are you tired of tripping 15 amp breakers with your 30 amp travel trailer, fifth wheel, or motorhome? Then it's time to install a 30 amp RV outlet onto your home! With a receptacle that matches the amperage rating of your RV you'll be able to run high draw appliances without having to worry about tripping circuit breakers.
For those of you with 50 amp RV's, keep in mind that the installation process is not the same for a 50 amp outlet. 50 amp RV outlets require a different circuit breaker as well as different wiring. However, I still recommend watching the video as there are tips and tricks shown on how to trim around the receptacle box for a professional finished look, general home electrical panel wiring tips, and steps on how to test the new RV receptacle when finished.

I'm not going to gig you any more about correct bushings at the boxes but will warn you to WATCH OUT FOR WASP NESTS in the rv box. They LOVE those boxes. A spray that leaves a residue is best. I'm a retired electrician and always told my helpers that the two most important tools needed to open a box were a screwdriver and a can of wasp spray. Keep up the vids

In many (maybe all) states, it is code to use a bushing whenever electric wire goes into a box of any kind. Doesn't matter if the box is plastic. But it is crucial in a metal box.

I am really impressed at the incredible quality work that you and your dad did! If you paid an electrician they never would’ve take the time to perfectly do everything, especially if it’s out of sight. The filing and the prepping of the metal box was really excellent, as well as the beautiful use of the vinyl siding around the new metal outlet box! I have some of those adapters too, that way I can plug my electric car into the two types of RV outlets at campground hookups. I have a Y-adapter to combine two 30amp 120volt RV outlets if more amperage is needed.

I just had a 30a breaker installed at my house a few weeks back. My dad, who's been in the RV business for almost 40 years gave me an important piece of advice: Make sure the electrician is absolutely clear that it's a 120v outlet, not a 220v! He said he's seen the results of such a mistake and it's not pretty!

Great info vid. When wiring, I usually start from the receptacle rather than the electric source (panel). That way, it eliminates the possibility of someone accidentally switching the breaker while you are wiring the receptacle. Highly improbably but still possible.

I’m no electrician by any means, but just don’t connect it to the breaker until you’re ready. I like to make sure I have adequate amount of wire in the box to be able to safely wire it to the breaker then just leave it hang And run the rest. Wire the breaker once done then flip it and pray you did it right 😂

Your video saved me. I couldn't figure out why my reader continued to say I had an open neutral. Found out the person I bought the camper from said the hook up was 220 volts, and not 110 volts. Wrong. Generally speaking 10 gauge wire can be run up to 50 feet at 80 percent load rating of 24 amps. 10 gauge at 50 ft can handle 30 A peak loads, like when the RV AC kicks on. Otherwise, 50 ft is okay.

FYI if say your Dad wants to use that outlet for powering some sort of outdoor tool or appliance, its easy to get a 30 to 15 Amp adapter, HOWEVER he needs to add a portable GFCI unit for safety. Did the same install at my house right before I sold it to go full time. Great tutorial. If you have this done by a professional, make sure they understand that it is an RV outlet so they don't try to wire it up with 240V. The outlets look the same and some electricians don't know that there is a differenc.

My understanding is that that is a common misunderstanding by electricians, as normal dryer plugs (30 amp) take 120 per leg so 240. If you get a 50 amp installed, though, it sounds like it’s not a problem, as that is already 120 per leg.

Once installed , the county comes out and inspects it to make sure it was done properly. Still not legal out in the country without a permit, but many get away with it...until something goes wrong.

Nice job and great explanation. BTW, when measuring alternating current voltage (VAC), it doesn't matter if you use the red or black probe to your multimeter (that only comes into play for direct current like a battery or A/C that has gone through a A/C to D/C rectifier). And after you ensure there is no voltage between the Ground and Neutral (top and right side), set your multimeter to the Ohms scale to ensure there is CONTINUITY between the two lead) - just seeing that there is no voltage reading doesn't mean the wires are actually connected to anything. @@matthewsandoval8749 Hmm, here's another one of those "it depends" situations. If you are measuring in the plug that goes to the RV, they should not have continuity, but if you measure the connector on the A/C pedestal then "yes" the ground and the neutral must be connected and provide continuity between the earth ground and the neutral. The reason is that we do NOT want current flowing through the Ground connection in our RV - a BIG NO-NO. So your current flows between the Hot and the Neutral wires in your RV, but never through the Ground wire, which is the reason your Ohmmeter reads infinity (open circuit). Good luck!

Ive done this twice for friends. The only thing I would point out here is that you need a cable clamp at the main box where the NM cable enters at the bottom. Without a clamp, it will eventually rub through the cable sheath and short out. I would also change the plate on that telephone box so no one later is confused to find 120v wiring in it rather than telephone cable. I don't think you need a clamp or bushing in the exterior box since you used the plastic bushing. BTW: if you ask an electrician to install a 30-amp outlet, he'll probably look at you funny and put in a dryer outlet. Stating 30amp 120VAC may help, but the key is an RV outlet, TT-30R. Since that telephone box is a low-voltage box, you would want to assure that no one gets tempted to install an outlet there. For the outside, they make a GFCI extension cord thingy for 15 amps.

Believe it or not, wires have a tendency to move because of the surges of current going through them, even as little as when turning on a light although VERY minute. If you want to see this in extreme form, check out how much jumper cables move next time you try to jump start your car.

Just speaking as an old master electrician, job well done! Couple of things, it's not GFCI protected as required by code and if you plug anything other than your RV into that outlet, as in any 120v device you are running a large risk. It's (the recepticle) is protected at 30 amps your typical device, is arc flash protected at 20 amps and amp protected at no more than 20 amps. I love your channel btw, please keep up the good work.

Pretty cool install and it was very kind of your parents to allow you to install the 30 amp outlet on their home. It also adds value their house 🔌👍🏼🏡 One note, as an architect I’m sensitive to water intrusion. The outlet box trim was a great idea and looks outstanding. I would have added a self-adhering flashing strip over the nailing flange & nail heads of the added trim. This would provide additional protection from capillary water intrusion behind the trim. All in all an excellent install. Congrats 🙏🏼⛺️😎

Very nice! I'm installing an outside outlet for my plug in hybrid. I'm hooking it up to a 50amp breaker because I eventually want to replace my car with an EV and want the extra power. I'm using an RV outlet and, just like yours, there's no knockout in the back! I could use the side knockout, but the back is much better. I'll do the same thing you did. In my case, since I'm doing a NEMA 14-50 plug, I replaced the receptacle that came with my RV Outlet with a heavy duty Hubbell outlet, which was a tad too big for the metal plate that holds the receptacle, so I had to use a 2.5" key hole saw to make it big enough and that has worked out well!

Outstanding! I didn't realize vinyl siding came off in sections. Not sure I understand how the trim keeps water out, but I'm sure it works. I thought all main panels had the ground and neutral busses tied together, but only in that one spot. It looks like there's enough room in the 30 amp box to add a 15 amp outlet for future use. Your dad looks just like you!
