The Mega Drive had arguably the most iconic sound chip together with the best compositions in the history of video consoles. The NES sounded like crap but could make up for it with a superior library of super hits and the Super Nintendo just tricked us into liking it, with the magic of reverb and admittedly some pretty cool tunes too. Nevertheless in my realm Sega takes the throne of sound.

I have to say NES's Contra music really was slick for its time. With only two variable waves and a triangle wave, it pulls off the first song I ever played on a piano: The infamous Aliens' Lair.

Act 1 in particular. Then the snowboarding at the beginning of it just after Carnival Night. But wait; S3K's zone act songs are in the right order in the Sound Test. Due to forseen time constraints however, Flying Battery would not fit between Carnival Night and Ice Cap. Considering that the snowboard was supposed to be the very door Sonic takes off of the airship at the end of the Flying Battery Act 2 boss.

It's all about the limitations. It's all about the limitations. Think about it; Fewer available hardware notes means you have to think fairly careful about your arrangement; all the while game sounds cut off these notes..
