I love the Apple Watch. I’ve been using them since the 1st gen. However, after this latest WatchOS update missing Power/watts on the Series 5 I’ve begun to look at my options for different watches. Case in point. Right now I’m going to hop over to your Polar Pacer Pro video👍🏻Appreciate you Ko!

I got this Apple Watch earlier this year as a present, and I’ll admit next time I’m going back to garmin, and I still use an old garmin to track my runs. The plus side though is the screen. Much nicer to look at.

The whole confusion on gps lock on smartwatches can be annoying. I went from a garmin watch to a polar watch. I had to look it up to figure out if the watch had found its gps signal. I feel garmin has that part the most ease of use going for the brand plus other features.

Polar changes color from red to green when it locks in. I think it also switches from flashing to solid.

I wonder if the $800 Apple Watch Ultra solved those battery charging issues of the regular Apple Watch. And yes me too I still like button style, instead of touch screen. To save battery of my watch while running the Chicago Marathon, I did turned off notification on some of the apps that I don't usually use and uninstall some apps which I barely use, and also disable Siri. with GPS turned on, after the race I still have 35% battery.
@kofuzi2 жыл бұрын
the thing with battery anxiety (or any anxiety) is that it's not always rational. so while it might be just fine, I think I've just had so many poor experiences with apple watches, especially when running in below-freezing temperatures, that I'm just not sure I would be able to enjoy it. this, overall, was a quite positive experience though, so maybe I've rounded a corner.

Amazing to try this challenge - I would actually try it for a week I think. You have some points I agree on, as a LONG time Apple Watch user and avid runner: The GPS lock thing, has now been activated as a feature on my new Apple Watch Ultra, which is great, but its software so there shouldn't be a limitation for it to come to the other models? Battery life etc. is a great update on the Ultra, so that is worth it alone, but device is just overall a great upgrade

Definitely a very novel take on the "Apple Watch for Runners?!?!" genre. For the last few years I absolutely agreed, a Fenix or Forerunner was by far the superior choice for consistent running - you can just forget about charging, whereas with the standard Apple Watch you're taking a full-time job of babysitting the battery. I will say that has changed with my AW Ultra - it's still not the "plug-it-in-once-in-a-while" experience of a Fenix, but having 2+ days of battery life instead of one is a massive increase. The fast charging cable is a must. I consistently get my watch topped up when I shower in the morning after a run or if I'm at my desk for a stray hour or so (charging from ~60% after 24 hours of heavy use instead of 30% on the S6) Charging is much quicker and way less burdensome. I haven't touched my Garmin in a month, I've gone for hikes and long runs without my phone, and I like having the more fluid UI and day-to-day smartwatch features of the Apple Watch. I suspect in a couple of years this battery gap will narrow even further. All that said - I also hate that Workout app font, and I use WorkOutDoors when I can.
@kofuzi2 жыл бұрын
WorkOutDoors is still one of my favorite apps. Still just so touch interface dependent though. I need my buttons, I guess.

Interesting challenge! Regarding the AW: I am using it since 8 month for running with the Stryd pod and it works IMHO nearly perfect. Ok, in that combination the AW itself works as a display only, but the Stryd app is really good. But one fact regarding the AW is annoying me: in colder days I would like to wear the watch on a longsleeve or on shield arm warmers and NOT directly on the skin of my arm. In these cases I always have to enter the passcode on the AW when I want to read any data of the watch. That really sucks. I hoped that the always on display would help but it didn't. At least not for me!? Have you any ideas? Cheers Sven
@kofuzi2 жыл бұрын
as far as I know, there is no solution for that. and wearing it on top of sleeve would cost you HR, unless you also had an external HR monitor. there are times where I have to re-enter my passcode in the middle of a run, even when temps are warm and I have no sleeves

Why would Apple ever want to create a smartwatch that could exist without an iPhone. Having the cellular version of the Apple Watch like you have, I enjoy leaving my phone at home. However, it is buggy. More than a few times, my wife would call and it wouldn't go through. She'd have to text and then I have to turn cellular off and back on to ensure I receive calls. Kinda defeats having the cellular version for emergency or urgent matters. Hope Apple fixes that.

I reduce my phone screen from 4+h to less than 1h a month ago, and it's the best thing I've done for mental health since a long time. At home, my phone is charging on a counter, or in a drawer. If I receive a call, my watch tells me. No more phone in the bed room. No more social media or youtube on the phone. It takes few weeks to stop the urge to check the phone all the time. At night, if I have an idea, I tell Siri to add it to the reminder app. My current carrier does not support Apple Watch e-sim, unfortunately. I use Ways while driving (not often), so my screen time is bumped to few hours for a day. but that's all.
