Lindey I’m here holding back my tears. We moved to the USA in December of last year from Kenya. And in the process of trying to figure out things I got into reselling. I started watching a lot of videos and I was surprised how reselling had potential. Now I used to be jealous of the cities that had bin stores and about two months ago I was in McPherson filming a a guy who owned a liquidation business. I quickly called a fellow reseller in Wichita and he told me that there is a new one even close by. I walked into your store and I remember I called my wife and told her, “Babe, I think this store will take my reselling business to the next level.” Here is the sweet part. I saw your video this morning of who the owner is and I was surprised it’s somebody I have been watching videos of. Wow wow wow. You made me purchase godaddy bookkeeping a few months ago. I'm a bin store addict! I travel far and wide to hit them up. I would one day love to open one.. I think😂 I think the best way I've seen pricing explained was through an overhead sound system. It doesn't look like an expensive set up. Ppl don't pay attention to sinage- myself included. If you're the only bin store in your area I could absolutely see the confusion with ppl not being aware of how they operate. One store- and actually my favorite that I shop often- gives instructions over the sound system. They do a live announcement at opening when the store fills and then have a softer announcement that plays in the background occasionally along with the rules, special pricing, test station information, etc. They are very strict about employees only opening boxes. Which I love, but it requires them to have a large staff to be available to do so. I appreciate the update. I've loved watching this from day one. I agree with something someone above said about the financial aspect. Not to be too nosey, but I've seen so many financial horror stories and as many success stories- so I'd love an honest overview from someone that I know is putting their all in and started informed and prepared (as much as you can be when opening a storefront). Things I have learned from other bin store owners. 1. Check inside every box at checkout...shocking how stuff gets in there that shouldn't be...and no one knows how it got there :) 2. People bring their household garbage and dump it in your dumpster. Other businesses do it too. 3. If you can, have a two door exit so when shoplifters leave the first have a remote control lock so they can't get out the second. 4. Put a sign in your on your door window what the price is today.

Here's an Idea " Install a couple large flat screen TV's to play a video explaining how the store pricing works and what your policy's are have it playing on loop, over and over all day, it could also advertise your upcoming events or specials as well? My local bin store has a different price each day starting at $8 on Saturday going down to $2 on Wednesday. Closed Thursday and Fridays to restock. Best part and might help from other opening item and getting lost in the bins they have a station to open all boxes 4 the customers to look at if it's not wanted they tape it up and back it goes to the bins. No confusion with pricing, what ever day of the week you arrive set price on all items. So happy you are doing great, all of your hard work will pay off.

I love seeing these brick and mortar videos, Lindey! Retail is where my heart is. Being a retail, boutique and trade show veteran myself, I can imagine what you’re going through with the bad apple customers. I grew to expect them daily and took it as a good day when there weren’t any! 😬 You can’t please everyone. About the pricing- you can never have too many signs. At least until people start to get used to your store. You could put a standing sign inside the door or over where they grab carts, signs above or below the actual bins, the checkout counter, etc. Think of eye level and where the customer’s eye falls naturally. Hopefully that would create less headache and broken record repetition answering questions about pricing. Good luck, I can’t wait to see more!

Use the advertising clip on frames to put a "How to Shop" card on each shopping cart. Same signage (very large!) on the walls and through the store. The key is, one sign, many sizes, posted everywhere. If every sign says the same thing the exact same way people catch on.

Hi, could you do a recorded announcement that repeats every 15 min. or so explaining the pricing of items? Perhaps every one of the announcements are different, maybe make up jingles to explain pricing.. My local supermarket thats family owned has announcements of specific sales in the store that week.. I dont know, just a suggestion?

Congrats on the early success. Maybe you could have some sort of signage where the customers first enter that says something like “If this is your first time shopping with us, this is how our store pricing works:” and then briefly explain. Some will ignore but some might read it too.

As to your pricing, how about having a floor stand that holds fliers next to the shopping carts. They can take one if they want one and have it with them as they shop. And/or have someone hand them out to customers. Congrats on your new bin store!!!

Well instead of flyers why not have something on the shopping carts and baskets that states the price? I can see maybe something on the side of the baskets that have the price or something on the carts that have the price, such as in the basket portion. It’s permanent, and will take a while to be damaged/scratched. Hopefully at that point people will have already gained the knowledge of a bin store and not need to look at it as a reference when it’s worn out.

Maybe have an announcement play over a loud speaker every 10 minutes or so to help them understand the prices

you should create a video that plays on loop on a tv at the front of the store that uses you and your employees acting out a typical shopping experience at your store. That way they get a visual , verbal thing they are watching and hearing. Kind of like before you get on a ride at Disney they prep you with info on a cute intro video before you enter the ride with pertinent info.

Maybe posting one of your employees as a door greeter provide cart and bag to incoming customer and explain the store pricing if it their first time shopping and when it slow that employee can float around to other work such as restocking carts, assisting at check out. ect..

As far as the cardboard and plastic if you can find a way to bail it and take it to recycle yards you can make money off of that as well. All retail places i have worked did it that way to bring more money into the company.

Hi Lindey, how about having one of your employees talk in a mic/mouth piece with a speaker and announce how the store pricing works while the customers are walking in and shopping. Also let customers know not to open items. If they have a questions bring it to the employee talking on the mic. You are awesome!!!

This is exactly what I would do. Hang 2 TV right from the ceiling that get seen as you walk in. Have flashy animations on them saying "All items in this store are $x today! Yes EVERYTHING!" The animations will draw people's attention and they'll 'be forced' to read the message. You could also have hanging signs over each bin saying "Everything in this bin is $x".

You need a cardboard thing at the entrance that has "today's items cost $ ____ " and change it daily... or announce the price before letting folks in...people shopping will fill each other in throughout the afternoon.

I remember when dollar stores first started here and people were constantly confused about pricing.. there isn't much that can be done. If that was your worst customer, you have been very lucky. No wonder you don’t want to tell us your supplier, you hire a fleet of getaway drivers and porch pirates. We had about 10% of our customers at our store in a small town announce to us that they would never return when we started requiring face masks In the summer of 2020 and we haven’t missed them if they stayed away.

Do you have a stand by the front door/cart area with the pricing model on it? Kind of like some goodwills do with their color of the week signs. That might help new customers since people are more likely to look at a sign right in front of them when they walk in than they are the walls (or at least I am lol).

I was thinking the same thing. Hopefully, it’s mostly lower priced items so the theft doesn’t hurt so bad. It’s a shame but in retail we have to assume there will be certain percentage of loss to theft.

Hope this doesn't sound harsh but the general public by and large MUST be told what to do. If you fail in this it turns into romper room very quickly. Keep it ultra simple, almost childish be the bent. I say this coming from a diverse career of Big Box retail to Business only wholesale to now online commerce. The simpler the better always. Assume all are 12 until such time they surprise you.

I have a local store with a similar 'bins' pricing model. They seem to have a very effective way of dealing with new customers when they walk in. Everyone is greeted when they walk in, and are asked if they've been in before. If yes, off they go. If no, a quick 'everything in the store is $5' (or in your case, all prices are posted on the boards) seems to pretty much solve the issue. :-)
