DON'T GET DISCOURAGED. For some reason, yesterday, I was feeling overwhelmed and struggling through this lesson. It's like my fingers just wouldn't move the way I wanted them to so I decided to put it down and pick up tomorrow. Well today, I restarted the lesson and it came very naturally. Sometimes we need a rest day or an extra day to get our heads in the right spot!!

Thanks for grouping these into a 30 day block of lessons. I'm well past 11 days in real time but keep coming back because I committed myself to fulfilling all 30 days, no matter how long it really takes me.

I tend to do several sessions in a day, until I can't really do the new material. I stopped on day 11 for over a week, just practicing what I learned randomly throughout the week. Once I start getting bored I tried moving forward, Last night I was suddenly able to work my way up to day 17, so I will probably sit here for a bit too. :) Once the hammer-ons and pull-offs started, it got super fun. Thank you for these lessons!

Just started ( a week ago) your 30 days banjo lessons in the Netherlands. It's all very clear and for as far as I can see I think I'll manage this in 30 days. I'm busy with day 11 at this moment and it's getting better little by little. Thanks for your help. I look forward to see more after this month...😊

Eli, thank you for this series!!! It's really nice. Well organized and well presented. Easy to follow and enjoyable. I like how you broke everything into small pieces, adding something different each day. It provides a nice flow, makes the learning process less overwhelming for a beginner, keeps practices from being repetitive, and really helps to see progress. I also love the playlists for different banjo players that you include. A question: Why is in the Foggy Mountain Breakdown roll used thumb on the 2nd string rather than repeating the index finger, which seems easier?
@EliGilbertBanjo3 жыл бұрын
Good question! It’s definitely easier at slower speeds, but when you speed it up it actually ends up being easier (for most people) to use the thumb. But it’s not set in stone!

Re: the thumb - I heard from a different instructor that it was because Scruggs thought it gave the second one a more "plucky" sound that he liked. It does sound very slightly different, adding a little variety, so maybe that's the case (or maybe it's just a myth 😁).

Why does the third note of the Foggy Mountain Breakdown roll need to be played with the thumb instead of the index finger?
@audrybella64052 жыл бұрын
Great lesson Eli. Thank you. What's the rationale for using the thumb on the second string as opposed to simply repeating with the index finger. For me personally its much easier and natural to use the same finger (index) again on the same string and I can do it much easier and faster than forcing my thumb (recklessly I might add....) down to the second string? 30 Days of Banjo is an awesome course. Thank you for creating and sharing it with us absolute beginners.

Hey Eli. In the foggy mountain breakdown roll why can't the second second string be an index?
@edmundlewis18222 жыл бұрын
I thought the same thing, but after thinking about it, it makes it a longer roll and that will help us to play faster and with better syncopation in the future.

Can anyone give an "ish" metronome speed that is a good indication you're ready for the next lesson? He mentions speeding up 5 or maybe 10 bpm at a time. I'm concerned about not being comfortable at whatever speed would indicate it would be good to keep moving ahead. TIA for any help!

I too am looking for the speed for my metronome. I think it's 120 bpm. Anyone got some help?

Hey Eli, do you know if there is a particular reason for why the "Foggy Mountain Breakdown Roll" switches from index to thumb to play the same note? Instead of for example, repeating the index finger twice, since it's already there?
@brille6663 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I was wondering about this as well!
@MasonCroneMusic3 жыл бұрын
When you play up to speed, it's easier to use the thumb. Picking with the index finger twice is pretty hard to do if you're playing fast😁👍
