One of the hardest "ear" things as a guitar player is getting used to the 5th string on the banjo being a higher note than the lowest note is on a guitar that's in standard tuning.

I really appreciate your simple/easy approach to learning in this series. I’m 14 days in and only on days 4/5, but I’m making progress. It might take me a couple months to get through 30 days but your lessons are short enough I don’t feel overwhelmed with the techniques each day. 👍

Never played an instrument before. Really surprised at how quickly I'm picking everything up. Muscle memory kicked in for open strings so now I can stay focused on the tablature which makes it so much easier on my brain and neck. Wish I started sooner. Thanks a bunch

as someone who's been a guitarist for almost 20 years, the previous 3 lessons where super easy but this is where it gets interesting for me. The top string (the G you hit with your thumb) sounding higher than the strings below it is really fucking with my brain to pickinghand connection hahaha, thanks for these awesome lessons!

G'day mate, I've come from Electric Bass and so already have a decent grip on a lot of these basics but still comin to these videos cause they're great. absolute kudos for explaining the basics for complete beginners to string instruments in a way that doesn't make those with those same basics and further go "yeah no sh!t". I'm hopefully picking up my first Banjo later today and figured I'd start lookin at these early. lovin your work.

Being a guitarist I basically flew through the first few videos in minutes and now I’m at the point where I’ve actually gotta practice more seriously than I have been. The tricky part for me was when looking at the fretboard I almost forget there’s 5th string even though I’m playing it and I’ll accidentally play the 4th string instead of the 3rd 😂 now I’ve gotten that down I’ve just gotta get used to the 5th string being the highest pitch, being a guitarist I’m used to the 5th being lower than the 4th so it’s a bit confusing but I’m definitely getting better. These videos are great 👍

This stuff is brilliant! It's broken into wonderful bite sized pieces that even I can handle. The first lesson was so simple, I couldn't see how it would lead anywhere. By the 4th lesson, all sorts of paths are already opening up. What a great teacher!!! Rather than offering up complicated drudgery that causes students to give up, Eli almost tricks you into playing. VERY VERY COOL!

I am loving the style of these videos. They're professionally made, and your teaching style really seems to work for all different skillsets. I've seen a lot of comments which say the banjo has been rather hard for them and they can still follow along to this course. I've kinda toyed with a banjo off and on for the past few years, so my "fundamentals" are a little more trained than a complete newbie. That said, I'm still finding this course astronomically helpful. Thanks so much for making these.

Eli, I've sampled so many beginning banjo KZbin lessons, CD's, and books but what you have provided is--at least for me--the very best! It's not just your logical method, or that you provide the tablature and recordings of Earl Scruggs to go along with it. It's your gentle patience and forebearance--something so much appreciated by someone who unfortunately lacked much native musical intelligence back in the day and now even more so in his mid-seventies!

My son Greer (who is 6) and I are having a go at this together. We also take online lessons from Noam Pikelny, however the lessons at this point seem a bit much for him. This 30 day course has helped with his banjo practice--which has been sporadic (mine as well at times). With this simple song and us practicing one we can learn together his practice has vastly improved. My only comment for todays' lesson is this... Having played banjo for awhile and thus learning a few rolls, it is a bit difficult for me to just play 3 notes--weird as that may seem. Feels more like going backwards than progression. Nice to have this whole thing broken down though in a manner my 6 year old can follow and learn. Looking forward to day 5 ( we've been at this now for 10 days, slow but sure and honest with ourselves). Thank you for the great lessons and happy picking.

I used to play banjo a lot. I'm a guitar player and haven't had a banjo in a decade but still have my fingerpicks, So I tuned the high E down to a D on an acoustic and removed the bass E and A strings. Then replaced the A string with the high G. I call it a banjitar. That's how I'm re learning and your course is awesome. Subscribed. Thank you.

It's super counterintuitive to me, coming from guitar to play a higher note on my thumb than my index finger, I just intuitively reach for the higher note with my index finger. Takin' a minute to "deprogram"

Me too ... only it's taking more than a minute! Once I get the tune into my head, my fingers automatically head south for the high note rather than north! How can I break this 30-year habit???
@benjaminsantiagosstuff
@benjaminsantiagosstuff 3 жыл бұрын
@@DavidTxxxx yeah it took me a bit, I think you just have to “go through the motions” let your hand “execute the program” and then it starts to actually make sense. I was actually learning a song with banjo roll type playing on guitar (Jerry’s Breakdown) so it was extra confusing…I think again you can just go slow and take the banjo on its own terms. The way these lessons stack information and build upon the previous ones is very helpful structurally

Question. Coming from guitar, its normal to alternate pick. This lesson i guess out of habit, i found myself after hitting the 4th string with my thumb pick, upstroking the 5th string. I figure this is not intented as you're not doing it, but i was wondering if there are any scenarios or techniques that utilize alternate picking with the thumb. Or is this just a bad habit to avoid?

I've never known anyone to do that so it would definitely be unconventional. At the very least it wouldn't be particularly helpful for bluegrass style banjo playing, but otherwise there are no rules!

Well, I'm still not proficient, ir even tolerable with day three, but decided to forge ahead. Day four is really just a natural continuation, and a good one. I can almost believe I can make music. Thanks. I may be stuck here or a few weeks. Knowing what banjo players eventually do, it's probably not wise to move on until this is smooth. I figure five times through at 120 bps with no mistakes (or almost none) will be smooth. Does that sound right?
