Dude... this was amazing. I commend you greatly for keeping track of all this, and and carry one knife for that long in general. I’m going to watch this again for sure! You and Ageis had me rolling. I loved watching you chop into that branch and twisting:) I did some stuff like that with mine too, and had no real issues. That steel performed way better than I thought it would against the staples and rock in the toughness test. Great video bud:) I finally got to watch it

I have a Spyderco Blurple millatary S110V G10 handle. I love it. It keeps it's edge extremely well. It is my EDC. The other two I have I really love are the Bench Made Mini Griptilian D2 steel & the Knives of Alaska Feather light with D2 steel. I have no problem sharpening any of them. I have a Gen 3 Wicked edge with stones from 80 grit to 3000 grit plus ceramics, lapping film & different microns for leather strops. But for these knives I usually do not go more than 1500 Grit with the ceramic at 17 Degrees bevel each side. My next knife steel I want to try is the 3V steel.
@FearNoSteel

This steel is capable of going to 65rc. For custom knives I feel like that's where it needs to be. The Spyderco has to appease production cost and bad users. It's not the most stable steel but I will use it for guys that really want stainless and can handle their shit with proper use and sharpening. I like it for the aggression for a thin slicer blade for hunters that like a low grit bitey edge with carbide reinforced teeth. I would not use for razor/push cut applications.

I don’t understand the “s110v is difficult to sharpen” rap. I actually dislike sharpening s30v *more* than s110v. S110v gets a ridiculously aggressive edge at 8 microns, no questions asked…and that’s all I’m looking for. It’s probably the main reason I enjoy sharpening tool steels most of all. By the time you’re at 16 or 8 microns, Cruwear and M4 are shaving on contact, with no coercion…assuming everything has gone according to plan.

This has been my experience with s110 too. Starting to think a lot of the negative stuff is coming from people who don’t know how to sharpen and properly deburr. I found it’s not too much harder to difficult than s30 like he said you have to pay attention to how you finish it. No chipping from regular use either so idk.

My m390 Delica is one of my favorite knives and it has no business being that with the money I have in too many of my knives 😂. But that knife is just great. It carries great. It feels great in my hand. It cuts really great with the thin blade, and their m390 hold a working edge (for me at least) FOREVER. I sharpened it to shaving but a little toothy probably 2 years ago. I carry a lot of stuff, but when I get to it I usually keep it for a few weeks as daily carry because I fall for it again. Great knives when you get the upgraded steels. I’m not a big fan of vg10.

I have a Manix 2 in S110V. The single sharpest factory edge I'd come across. No problems with the steel. Granted, I don't use it to chop wood. Better tools for that. Nor do I abuse it by asking it to perform in a manner that it was never meant to. Again, better tools for that, too. Would have preferred a different lock, but that's another story.

Just don’t use it to stab/twist into harder materials, (like wood), and it’ll be fine. That said, if toughness and ease of sharpening are more important to you than high corrosion resistance, (while maintaining high edge retention); you should consider getting a Native5 LW in M4 steel instead. Blade HQ has those on sale right now, (BHQ exclusive version with black M4 and “mint” green FRN), for ~$120, which is a pretty good value, imo.

Did you resharpened a few times to get rid of the burned edge? Im about to buy a UKPK, and its only available in BD1N and S110V, not my fav steels but it cant be that bad right? I intend it to replace my opinel, which takes to long to open and lock for my taste which makes me use it less, also the steel is too soft and rolls easy. Im not afraid of sharpening S110V at all, i have diamond plates and use a lower angle relief bevel with a 15 to 20dps (depending on steel and task) microbevel. So the volume of steel to take off for touchups is minimized. But im worried about chipping when i want to do some carving, i really dont need toughness, just a little edge stability during load. Did your edges improve? :/

I recently got a Native 5 in S110V to use while I learn to sharpen well and wait for the stuff I need to take it apart and do some maintenance. Still can't find replacement washers. I never got tired of it though. It just finally got a little too dull for me, started losing the blade centering because of the extra thin teflon washers, and had some minor spot rust.

How many times has it been sharpened? It's going to take 3-5 edges to get past that. I've had the same happen with anything from 14c28n to K390 and Maxamet and after a few edges the issue goes away. You have to het past that overheated and fatigued steel to see how it really performs.

S110V PM2’s are back in stock, (for ~$215), so I came here to learn about the steel used on this model. I don’t think I’ll buy one. I don’t want to deal with a chiptastic nightmare when it comes time to sharpen. M4, CRUWEAR, REX45, and similar steels are much more appealing to me. If I need higher corrosion resistance; I’ll be fine with S45VN, rather than S110V. Gibs me that BHQ M4 Manix2, btw! 😁 If they do another run of those; I’d buy one in an instant.

@@Outpost_76 I researched S110V a little more, including its composition vs other higher-end steels. Afterward, I ended up putting a bluple PM2 on layaway. I think S110V’s composition makes M390’s look lazy and inferior, at least on paper. The heat treat makes a huge difference, of course, and Spyderco usually does that very well. I’ll probably spring the PM2 out of knife jail in a couple weeks, and then I’ll see.
@sonofliberty78
@sonofliberty78 Жыл бұрын
@@Outpost_76 Got the S110V PM2 a week ago. Golden doesn’t always do the best assembly job, but this one was put together right. Blade is centered, (no play), and the action is great out of the box. It’s getting better as it breaks in, too. I sharpened the edge down to 17 deg per side with my new Work Sharp PA Elite, (diamond to 600 gr, then ceramic, finished with a strop), and I’m quite pleased with the knife. I think that when people complain that S110V is “chippy”, they’re misunderstanding its nature. It’s always going to have a tendency toward a toothy edge, because of its ridiculously high carbide content. You can see how many more it has vs something like M4, just by looking at the 2 steels, side by side. It’s kinda like chunky peanut butter, vs creamy. 😁

@@jimmycricket7946 Maxamet is going to be very high on edge retention. It's not very tough but I've never had an issue with it not being tough enough. Cruwear will have good toughness, impact resistance and edge stability but it's going to have half tge edge retention of Maxamet. This is where K390 comes in for me. K390 has great edge stability, it's tougher than Maxamet but not close to Cruwear. It does however in the 65 to 66 rc range have edge retention much higher than Cruwear. K390 cut 90 feet less than Maxamet putting it as the second highest factory heat treated steel I've tested.
