@@jase4270 Some of these towns were literally wiped off the map--the ones that did save up some supplies for emergencies had those supplies washed away. Even the towns that weren't wiped off the map, they were heavily damaged. And @cindyorr, yes, you can cook over an outdoor fire--if you can find dry firewood, have a way to cut it up/off the tree, know how to start a fire without matches/lighter-, and have the food to cook and something to cook it in. We managed before we had gas and electric because we learned all those skills from our parents. How many people know these things now? For crying out loud, now is not the time to be sarcastic or "See, I told you so" kind of attitude.

@hotaruglaive. You may not realize it, but you are being a troll right now. It’s important to try to put yourself in their spot, if it doesn’t make sense to you…… If you are willing to imagine yourself or family or friends in that situation and,, then read up on how much notice they were given and how…… and you’ll understand more. It makes sense. And it wasn’t their fault. This was a natural disaster. They made the best decisions they could and knew how, in their position, and based on their experience. Sometimes it’s easier to think they must have done something wrong, than to realize that we don’t always have control. It wasn’t their fault. And if it happened to you and you made the wrong choice on whether to stay or go or when to go… it wouldnt be your fault either. This is a reminder to stock up on all our emergency preparedness. But… you can only do what you can do.

We have had major flooding here in Iowa back in 2008 and then again in other parts, within the last year. Then in August 2020, we had a derecho go through with 140 mph winds (land hurricane with straight line winds) and destroyed so much in Eastern Iowa. Some buildings are still waiting for insurance settlements. Power was out for many for 2 weeks. My mother who was 90 at the time, had no cable and internet for a month an a half. People all pitched in and helped themselves and each other. We didn't wait for the government, in fact, we couldn't even get this storm acknowledged for at least a week. No one knew because we had no power in about 7 counties. The government will not save us. We must be able to work together as a community but that is difficult when everyone in the community is affected and there is no way to communicate. It does get better, thankfully. Lots of prayers for all those affected. Stay positive. (Romans 2:28).

That’s the problem, people think that it will be easy to get back to normal. It’s going to take years of hard work and still some things will never return, that’s just the way it is. When you lose your entire life’s work in a business and your home from the same event it takes a toll on your mind. Some people chose to move on and let the past stay in the past. Others refuse to give up and rebuild and inspire others to do the same. Neither is right or wrong, it’s what is best for each person.

We are close to Niagara Falls and Canada, breathtaking views all around, friendly people and lots of fun things going on all the time! Excellent jazz scene! Comedy is abundant! Super bikeable city with lots of greenways and more. I live in Elmwood Village which is very Asheville-like. Food co-op, community gardens, a great farmers market and more. We even have our own version of the River Arts District called Larkinville. Another great area near Buffalo is East Aurora which is like Asheville in many ways! Please make sure to fill your tanks prior to a major storm because as we all know it may be virtually impossible to get any afterwards. Sadly, a lot of folks didn't expect the storm to go so far north or for it to rain as long as it did but nature is unpredictable. This is exactly why it's best to stay prepared prior just in case. Emergency go kit and medical kits should be on hand and readily available if you have to quickly leave or if you have to stay in place for an extended period of time with no access to the outside world or its resources. @@MaryAnn-r1g agreed, if your house is leveled and washed away by a wall of mud and water, putting plywood on your windows and surrounding your house with a few sandbags isn’t going to help. And despite meteorologists best efforts, they’re never going to pinpoint exactly where, when and how intense, the storm will be at a specific time. A few years ago in Lawton, British Columbia they had 120°F weather, then a forest fire that devastated the area. Then an atmospheric river that caused mudslides and flooding That destroyed everything in its path. These are things we should expect with human caused climate change. We should certainly try to elect people who understand climate change And at least will not lie to us.
