A very rare horror movie with kids as the main characters that is a hidden cult classic, is The Gate. The movie is dark, yet with an eerie suburban energy only dark 80s horror can create. A young boy is left alone with his older sister and best friend for a weekend, when a tree in his backyard is struck by lightning, revealing a strange hole in the earth that refuses to heal... awesome movie. Do go in blind, like many 80s trailers it gives away way too much.

This is true. Michael Keaton as _Batman_ was kind of a shocker. And, of course, we had probably seen the 1960's version. There was also Keaton as _Johnny Dangerously_. I also remember his short-lived series _Report to Murphy_.

True, although Adam West did set a comedic standard for Batman, and Keaton fit that well, but people were in the mood for a dark, actiony Batman, and Michael Keaton just seemed way too comedic to be credible. People had the same thoughts about Heath Ledger as the Joker.

ADVENTURES IN BABYSITTING!!! this was part of a coming-of-age moment for me. (1976, boy) my parents didn't believe in an allowance so the only way i could honestly get into a theater was with them, and it usually meant the drive in where bored me could rubberneck from the back seat and see purple rain and terminator and full metal jacket while listening to something like "here come the littles" or whatever other baby movie they had bought tickets to. when adventures came out on home video i was of course too young for a blockbuster card (and still no allowance), so i had to beg and plead for 3 months to get them to rent this one, because i was bored with things like brighty of the grand canyon. every week when we went to blockbuster, i'd pick adventures, and they'd veto it because it was rated pg-13 i wasn't 13. i don't remember why i was so stuck on wanting to see it, but i remember the argument that finally won them over. "pg-13 means parental guidance where anything in the movie that a parent objects to the parent can guide the kid about why they object. teaching moments, because i'm growing up in spite of your efforts to keep me forever five." so that scene where the horndogs thought chris was the model in THAT magazine, they of course had to pause tape and explain what THAT magazine was and the moral implications of... well... you know. anyway, i reminded them why we boycotted 7-11 a couple years prior and said i wasn't interested in paper anyway because... same scene different guy "you're not her. you're too pretty." (or something like that. it's been 84 years. ok closer to 35 but i couldn't resist using the line) ...because i can't be THAT guy with paper. next week i was FINALLY allowed to start picking age-appropriate movies.

One movie I want to see people react to is 48 Hrs/Another 48 Hrs. Eddie Murphy starred in 48 Hrs as his first movie (1982) during his SNL gig, and it was one of the earliest buddy-cop action movies out there, but it was cop x criminal. The original movie also had shown a solid dynamic between Jack Cates and Reggie Hammond, who had every reason to hate each other. Now, the movie is a bit sensitive by today's standards because of some elements of racism, but the journey manages to get to where these two achieve a sound enough friendship with one another that carries on into the sequel years later. And the movie is just so well edited and tells a solid enough story for what it's going for. This was before we had movies like Lethal Weapon, Red Heat, Turner & Hooch, and other types of buddy action flicks that began to pop out in the later 80s. And as for the sequel? Sabotaged by the studio. The final product is a good movie, but the reason it feels so off is because the original movie was meant to be longer - Started out at 145 mins, then got trimmed to 120 mins by studio request and with the director's involvement, and then got cut further to 90+ minutes just days before it went out to theaters. And you can see the elements that could have made the movie a lot better if it got the material restored that supported it.

But, hey, you went out of your way to mention the James Woods segment in Cat's Eye. I brainstormed a list of (I'm sure) little seen, but all interesting intense performances from Woods that helped secure his place as the anti-hero protagonist we would come to expect from his "method" acting. Fast Walking (1982) Woods portrays a pot smoking prison guard who must protect a new prisoner from an assassination attempt. Once Upon a Time In America (1984) Best gangster movie not called The Godfather. Salvador (1986) Oliver Stone's directorial gem stirred some controversy. A political drama based on actual events. Best Seller (1987) with Brian Dennehy as the author. The Story (Woods) finds him. Cop (1988) Not so simple murder story. Mystery unwinds. Dirty Harry of 90's? (no sequels though). True Believer (1989) Woods as counter culture lawyer. Bad hair (pony tail) but a great performance. Pretty good mystery too. If you like Christian Bale and mysterious films, try to get hold of The Pale Blue Eye. It was based on Louis Bayard's novel of the same name, with Bale's retired NYC detective hired to investigate the deaths of cadets at West Point in the early 1800's. The amazing Harry Melling is Cadet Edgar Allen Poe (yes, Poe was a cadet!). The movie had an extremely limited release, and isn't available on DVD in the US yet as far as I know. Two 80s movies that come to mind are two William Peterson (CSI) vehicles are excellent suspense crime dramas, To Live and Die in LA, which features maybe the greatest car chase scenes, and Manhunter, the screen introduction of Hannibal Lector (Silence of the Lambs). Both have a true 80s crime drama feel (Miami Vice) but are fantastic on their subjects. Manhunter was the first screen presentation of Red Dragon, later remade under that title, directed by Michael Mann (Heat). Both excellent and very underrated.

Should I be surprised nobody has specifically mentioned Rob Reiner's directorial debut with the college teen comedy The Sure Thing with then unknown John Cusack. It may have been Cusack's first movie after Better Off Dead (both 1985). Savage Steve Holland then used Cusack again (after Better off Dead) in One Crazy Summer (1986) that took place on Nantucket island. Curtis Armstrong is in both Steve Holland movies, also. Demi Moore is the girl in One Crazy Summer not speaking in a French accent like Diane Franklin in Better off Dead.
