Gifts... I purchase experiences for family, like a biplane ride or a fishing charter. This year I gave my husband and son a helicopter tour over the smokies. These are things people would never buy for themselves but will carry the memory of it for a lifetime

Another option is charity in their name - like, what was it... Unicef? That allow you to purchase say, two hens and a rooster for a poor family in another country and they get a nice thank you package. I gave that to my sister in law who used to keep chicks and she was amazed. I think Kiva (micro loan org) may have a sort of gift card thing, too.

I love you videos. I am 65 years old. I have been living your lifestyle my entire life. People thought I was weird in the 70's when i was recycling everything. I had to hunt down places to recycle. I used to get a year supply of magazines to read from the church paper drive....and then donate them back the following year. My daughters loved going with me on our "pilagings. I taught them the art repurposing materials. Their art supplies came from everything. Keep on keeping on. Well done.

I agree and have found myself recycling too. I also love growing my food and sharing it with others. Hope to have a place people can visit with their tiny homes. Garden or just buy fresh veggies and eggs. Showers, Wi-Fi, free movie night with popcorn and a crafting area. In Poconos in Pa. Elevation is flood safe and beautiful fall leaves with mountain views and natural springs.

Buy things that use batteries and use rechargeable batteries for them. Built-in rechargeable is a trap to buy new when the internal wears out, very common now. (See third paragraph.) Art materials are essential. You CAN be frugal and only buy nice supplies in small quantities. The digital "thing" is eventually a barrier to the real experience. ONE example: Try doing digital ceramics. Then again, experience turning mud into glass by putting it in a chamber as hot as the sun... (Graphite, Conte crayon, painting with buttery oil paint, The smell of Dektol as you transform reflected light into a tangible form, ... Case closed.) Immovable object against unstoppable force: You realize your (***excellent, IMO***) lifestyle is in complete contradiction to the consumerist economy that got you where you are, right? The natural soap company AND the fabricator of your digital tablet need to move inventory to stay afloat. More inventory sold, healthier company, in theory. How do you support one company without the other? How do these companies gather payroll for their employees? (The items don't make themselves.) What is the best way to support the little natural soap company and still support the digital tablet company that has more cash on hand than some countries on this planet? We are lucky to live in the first world.

Wow, this was really interesting. Your lifestyle is something I would have adopted when I was younger. However, now I'm 57 and disabled, so I couldn't do it. Well, I know it has been a year since this comment but these videos make me want to live this way. I am 58 and disabled but I can get out some...when I do get out it takes a day or several to recover. My husband says a big NO to living this way but I wonder if I wouldn't feel better out in a Scamp somewhere. We aren't made to stay indoors all the time. If I were younger, I would be living life in a Scamp with no looking back.

I'm wanting to make a community garden project on some land here up in the Poconos in an area safe from floods and mid range seasons that include mountains with fall leaves an some snow but then Spring comes back very quickly. Growing native plants as raspberries, mulberries that don't need to be sprayed. Blueberries and paw paws.. just for starters.

I love videos like these because you move over ideas quickly so I don’t get bored by detail of ones I’ve heard already but can pick up new ideas in 10-15 minutes while I’m cleaning my kitchen! And then I can always go and look up the new ideas in more detail or think of how I would use it in my life. Thanks!

Yes we know about the 10 year restrictions but that pertains to campers with plumbing ( bathrooms). Ours will not have a bathroom or gray water storage.. So we are good at most campgrounds. 🙂👍

Hi Pearl Bubbles no ma'am not yet.. We started at our local state park (testing the waters per say) I have always had to think out things first lol... but we ended up loving it!.. So we started doing 6 months in there and 3 months home and then 6 months back in... We were back and forth.. I wanted to make dang sure this was the life we wanted to live before we decided to move on.. Well then we started doing other parks close by to my hubby's job..... And then we just never went back home... My husband is now invested with his Job and next year we hit the road.... So its going to be a Great Adventure... He will still have to work and do seasonal jobs so his SS don't lapse but we are ready!.... :)

I am starting to save styrofoam and paper cups to plant seedlings. I try to reuse plastic bags, even washing them between uses. I also have cut waaay back on almost all items you mentioned. I pretty much exclusively prepare food at home, so I'm not eating out which can get pricey. I sew my clothes. I clean many things with baking soda and vinegar. I haven't had a tv in about seven years. I had to downsize to an essentials only lifestyle. It's a choice I made to purge and not accumulate.

For laundry try using white vinegar it cleans your clothes and when they come out of the dryer they are soft and they do not smell like vinegar and vinegar is a lot cheaper to buy then laundry soap or even dr. Bronner's

yes, distilled white vinegar and baking soda and water in a bucket gets the job done ...sun dried for fresh crisp clothes:) I do it every other day..makes laundry a piece of cake:) hardly takes any time at all:)

Yep mix 1 part vinegar 3 parts water spray bottle and can do dishes and wipe with paper towel, also wipe counters

Pearl Bubbles I don't use washing machine so not sure what size a large load is for you. If a spray bottle has 500 ml (two cups size) I would put 100 ml vinegar 400 ml water. Huge things of vinegar are cheap at costco, and it has no oily residue like Bronners

I love this. I actually already do most of this while I am still in my house (I am planning a nomadic shift within the next 4 years). It is great to develop a voice that stops me before I buy anything. We all have WAY more stuff than we need. Personally, though, I totally disagree about the live music! To me listening to live music is transcendent and is one of the best uses for money! Also I believe in supporting artists when I am able to and musicians can have a tough go (the ones that I like anyway) when so much music is available for free. Anyway, I continue to love your videos!

I lived in a teepee for a few years in the 70s. Although it wasn't as portable as the scampi, minimalism was essential. It was larger than most people's Small apartments☺️. I'm an old lady now and fondly remember the good old days. When my son asked me what my dream retirement home would be I showed him pictures of yurts off grid. 👵🏕️

I never understood the access to a shower part of van life. I grew up without a toilet or shower in my house, but remained clean, even after a day of chasing the cows into the field. All you need is water and a rag (towel for fancy people) If you have a way to warm water, you can warm water for a bath. They have collapsible tubs now, so if you have room enough to walk in your van, you can wash. I do home health care on the side and some are bedridden, so how do you think I keep them clean. Water, soap, and a towel. I can clean every part of them thoroughly, so their skin will not break down, you must understand the reason for washing.

Girl, I love your thought and your delivery of it! I’m an rv’er girl of almost 6 and a half years now, and you are so on point, the trouble is when the people you live with think all that stuff is necessary (my family lives with me in our rv), and then counter with my weakness, sentimental cards and gifts. I’m in a country that’s new to me (ish) and some of my family and friends are across the ocean. But even from the ones here, I have a hard time giving away or throwing gifts or cards made for me years and years ago, it’s just so full of sentiment. So that’s my ‘I’m not super good at this’ weakness. Last year my family really began to understand my living with less point of view (after almost 4 years of me living it!) and they thankfully started giving me gifts I really need, wrapped in fabric that I’ll use later. An example is they’ll give me a quality piece of jewellery I don’t have, as one gift from everyone (as opposed to lots of smaller ones), and they’ll make sure it comes from the store without plastic or with least as possible. Then they’ll wrap it in cotton cloth squares that I use to cushion breakable objects in the rv when we’re travelling. I love those gifts so much and I’m so grateful to my family for seeing my point of view. Now I’m back to excitedly looking forward to gifts again because I know that they know what I truly want, and if there’s nothing I need, then they give me digital music money. I Always love that. ;) I hope you make more videos about smart rv living! I just discovered your channel, I don’t know how long you’ve been in the rv home world, but I think you’ll be happy in this camp ;) literally! ;D

I recently got my wood sticker. I've been needing inspiration lately, so I got one for motivation. Now I can't figure out where to put it. You are beautiful ! No make up needed. It can be very difficult to go off grid or be minimal in this modern world. The resources, needs or environment can vary for everyone. You seem to have found a very generous balance of those. Recycling, going green etc. is very noble and needed in our world. Unfortunately many methods actually create a larger impact on the environment than what it may appear on the surface. Humans are the most wasteful creatures on the planet. A lot of homeless people are minimalist. But it's funny that I have seen some homeless people have more stuff collected up than you have in your scamp.

I appreciate the amount of honesty this video has. It's not like "you have to make zero waste forever to be minimalist, and have like five belongings" it's just sharing so many things that we dont need and should rethink or stop using them. It's especially nice about the "plastic bag as a trash bag" part because I'm not going to be able to 100% avoid those types of containers but it doesnt mean I cant use them for this.

Gee I didn't know I was a minimalist all these years. There wasn't one item that you don't buy NOW that for years I haven't bought on a regular basis. 15 years ago a friend came over to my house. She saw I didn't have a TV. She wanted to go out immediately and buy me one. I told her I hadn't watched TV regularly for at least 15 to 20 years. She couldnt undersrand how I could live without one. I found when I unplugged the TV my need to purchase nonessentials dropped dramatically. Ditto with magazines, and other media. When in my early 20's (1970's) I was in boot camp. TV, radio, and newspapers were not allowed. We were told if something happened and we needed to know we would be told. I have found that with in minutes of a important event happening I find out about. For example I was informed about the towers being hit before the 2nd plane hit. Disengaging from social norms /peer pressure was very liberating for me. Introspection is much more beneficial than a Starbucks. PS I grew up in Lenexa.

Such as old windows or doors or lamp shades or old barn wood planks or cd's, or old sheets/blankets found at thrift stores, etc etc. etc...the sky is the limit here. My daughter is a digital artist, so I understand that it does have value and it is art. however I am not ...I paint primarily and it's just not the same. however I did have to live in a trailer almost full time for a couple of years and I found that colored pencils were the best solution for portable art. they have these wonderful binders that zip up that hold a hundred of them at a time, and you don't have to have any kind of special solvents or even water. You don't have to worry about things having to dry. if you do want to go that route they have watercolor pencils and these cute little brushes that you can fill with water to manipulate them once you put them down on the paper. It's a portable, easy-to-manage way of creating for those who might be looking for a solution that is not electronic. They even have colored pencil by number sets for people who want to do something casual or simple. I've actually used them myself personally on vacation or such, and just use the board with the lines on it is a base to create a full-blown work of art.

Oh such a good job with the 30 things! Here is my latest challenge. I recently retired. There are two of us. We are in a house., next month renting out the lower level. . The fun. I have already adopted many of your ideas. 1.Jewlery. Sold or donated. 2.Clothes, sold or donated. I have about 30 things to wear in any season, this includes outer-wear, jewelry and shoes, boots or sandals and a purse. Since I am in the Sub Tropics in Georgia we have mild winters so there is only like 2 seasons here, cool and hot. 3.Trash. I collect all food scraps for the worm compost. I have recycled and composted since the 70's. 4.Recycle everything, drive to the recycle center in the county, and end up with one small bag of actual trash per week. 5. Grocery shop. I bring my own groc. bags. I support the local Farmer Markets. DO NOT want to collect bags. 6.Dog Food. I buy dry and supplement half of his diet with a nutritous mix of chicken, pea, bean, celery, pumpkin and coconut oil mix that I make from scratch with whole chicken, freezing it for safer consumption, just get his meals out the day before to thaw in fridge. 7. Skin. I only use argon oil on my face, and goat milk soap to wash. (Moroccan oil) it feels so nice and packed with VIta-E. I use shampoo and conditioner and the goat soap. I like makeup but use very ,very little; only for dress up or Christmas or Halloween when I make up for my famous witch. I love Dr. Bronner and use it a lot for washing clothes. 5.I bought wool balls for the dryer and use rose geranium on them Mmm smells lovely. 6.Drive. I piggy back errands. This month have only put 200 miles on the RubySu the Subaru. So still have a half a tank. yaas. 7. Books and Periodicals. I love to read and get them all free from the library and down load to the ipad. Thats about 7 things to your 30. Oh in winter I put the geraniums in the basement. just keep them watered about 1x month. Pull them all back out in spring and we are good to bloom. Geraniums are great like that. So many of us out here doing our part. You are are having the best time. So thankful for young folks like you. Keep it up! Blessings. Nameste.

Add 1cup of vinegar to your rinse water when doing laundry. It’s a fabric softener and makes clothes smell clean and fresh. Also cuts the soap so clothes rinse cleaner.

Vickie... I love dogs too! The more I learned about the treadmill I used to be on, the more I positively know that "real living" experiences have to be enjoyed the harder ways by doing without expensive luxuries. I have been at the very top. No...there's no way to summarize decades of experiences. The most wise people in the world actually have less "friends" than others. My true best friend is still a ...dog! They are so loving and can be trusted better than most any person can be trusted. That's an extremely rare trait that I assume you know about. And yes, I truly have been at the top in more than one industry. I finally truly know way more about the term "man's best friend". I've been wiser than most for decades, but learning never ends. I recently finally realized for a reasons I can't summarize, exactly why dogs are truly humans best possible friends. You're comment obviously caught my attention. Enjoy!

I love Dr. Bronners! In preparation of van life (which never happened) I started bathing 1-2x/day with just 16 oz water, a wash cloth and a couple of drops of Dr. Bs. It's seriously as good as a shower. I learned it from some full-time truckers. So many people freak about how much you can do with Dr. Bs but it's really incredible. This was the 1st video I've watched of yours. I'll look for more. Great job!

I never used a diva cup (not invented when there was a need) but younger women recommend them for long distance hikers. I have a question about them though. How do you empty them in a public bathroom or if you are out in the wild ? Isn't it a little messy ? Especially with no access to running water (wilderness) ?

@@djg5950 when I am not at home, I can rinse it with a bottle of water. At home, after you dump it, you clean it in the sink and put it back in. Then clean up. Since you can wear it 12 hours, you change it when you wake up and when I go to bed. Great for long trail runs

Another type is the "keeper". It is sold online at keeper.com. I have used one for 15 years. She is right, it is life changing. It doesn't dry you out the way tampons do, and you can put it in in the morning when you think you might start you period at work, and then forget about it the whole work day. Or you can put it in at bedtime, and not have to get up in the night.

Before reading further some people might find this is too much info they want to know but for the ladies it is important: Not everyone can use a Diva cup. For people who have heavy periods you will be changing the cup every hour. I know from personal experience. You might have to use a pad with it to be safe. There are washable pads but camping might be challenging. It is doable though.

I don't live in a van or camper , but I did downsize to 400sq feet about 11 years ago . I like the idea of use it up wear it out , do without . Great tips ! Many of which I use myself . One thing I couldn't do tho , is to get rid of my art supplies . I have a small studio where I create things " upcycled " and sell them at a store . I have a garden , so I compost much of my waste . Elsa, I just thoroughly enjoy your videos. At 67 years of age I find the addiction to things is horribly hard to get freedom from! I finally, after 52 years of smoking, have made it 3 months without cigarettes!!(Party time every day, ya know?) and I so admire what you and Barron have (are?) doing. I need to put a list in front of my face EVERY time I to shopping. Because of current, but not permanent, I am not able to downsize as I would like because I can't drive right now, so I can't tow a trailer, so I live in a mobile home AND, OF COURSE, I filled it up. It seems like faster than the blinking of my eyes and I am drowning!!! YIKES!! I am going to start this very hour to become an essentialist. It won't look the same as yours, but I will take on about 25 of your listed things. After surgery and recovery, which will take many months, the BIG REDUCTION will begin. I'll then be able to drive again and I have wanted to live in a tiny travel trailer for several years. After another six months or so I will probably be able to buy one like I want as a PREVIOUSLY OWNED, trailer and save big bucks! (Fingers crossed) I have some of your stickers and have them put where they will inspire me. Elsa, you are a Pro! I personally know, the body adjusts well when you stop using all the chemicals on and in it. It may take a few months for the body to adjust for newbies though. Fast Food is loaded with chemicals I don't miss it, I can regularly find Fresh Farmers Markets/roadside stands for my take-out food, but careful some can be pricey. Hope you do some colder weather this year, I do appreciate season changes being born in Georgia.

I already follow many of your principles, but it’s good to have it reinforced in my mind to keep going on this happy path and adopt a few new ideas. Like you I cannot see the sense in lining a rubbish bin with plastic. I just throw anything that I can’t find a compostable use for straight into the kitchen bucket and then transfer to the rubbish bin which gets picked up weekly with surprising little odour. Sometimes when I’m pruning I’ll put a few branches in the bottom of my rubbish (trash) bin and that helps keep it clean.

I absolutely agree with this. I use Dr Bonner for cleaning, laundry and such. I make my own soap. When you stop using detergent and fabric softener it's an adjustment. I washed some with it after not using it. Not only was the scent overwhelming but it felt slimey. If you want your stuff to smell nice yet a bar of soap and cut it in pieces and put with clothes and such. Makes it smell nice and it will make the soap harder so it lasts longer in the shower

Oh, on the trash bag thing! I use my dog food bags. Dog food gets dumped out of them, into plastic buckets with an airtight Gamma Seal lid, so the food stays fresh and doesn't attract bugs/mice, and I use the bag as my trash bag. Since they're pretty heavy duty, you can carry them out and dump what's in them without having to throw them away, and they come in different sizes, so you can get the size bag that works best for you, and by the time you buy the next bag, the old one can be funky inside (meat juices, melon juices, etc), so you just toss the old one in the recycling bin and use the new one. :)

SilverFlame819 FTI: the dog food bag is actually made to keep the food preserved & fresh. If you notice how the inside of the bag is kind of “greasy” or has a smoothness to it that’s to keep the food from getting rancid faster which btw is what happens when you transfer the food to ANY plastic container, no matter how tight the seal is. You can store the food in the plastic to keep out the insects and/or mice but try to get a container big enough to allow you to put the bag inside (that holds the food).

I do this too, have done for years - they are much heavier duty than 'normal' bin bags (which I also use :-[ ) - and my dog food doesn't last long enough to go 'rancid' because I feed it to my monsters too fast. I've NEVER in 30 years had a rancid dog food problem! If this were an issue I would buy in smaller quantities.

My Grandma has been using dog food bags as garbage bags for probably longer than some of us have been alive. She also only accepts paper bags at grocery stores and then doubles them up and has a perfect sized trash can to put the bags in and she uses those to hold the trash until they're ready to be thrown out and then uses 2 more bags to replace them.

Styrofoam. When restaurants put my take-out in styrofoam, I always recycle it ANYWAY! If they get enough of it, they can jolly well learn to deal with it. Here in Michigan they only recycle what's profitable. Question is: why do we allow companies to produce what isn't recycleable? Plastics. I give the Recycler all plastic wrappers, too. My sister set up a recycle program for a major aerospace company in the 1980's. She learned that ALL PLASTIC is recyclable.

Hit hard by the 08 recession, went from a luxury apt in So Ca to the Walmart parking lot with partner, autistic son, daughter, 2 dogs, 2 cats. Lost my beautiful plants, both cats, 1 dog, my leather furniture and other items got wrecked being stored in a non temp controlled public storage for 3 yrs of homelessness. Stayed 18 months at a KOA campground. Now live in a townhouse in a lower class neighborhood. I never want to go without a roof, walls, building, heating/ac, electricity and plumbing again. Glad your happy, diversity is the spice of life. We all travel a different road.

Love your videos Elsa. I bought a refitted 1992 Freedom Popular 13" caravan and love it. I like your solar panels that you can face to the sun to maximise capturing sunlight. I'm exploring Solar panels which will minimise visits to a caravan campsite to recharge the leisure battery. I saw your video Re wood burning stove and am looking at options to add an awning and small Wood burning stove to keep me cosy off grid during winter. One of my best buys is the Ridge Monkey M2 compact non stick sandwich toaster which is my favourite 'pan' cos I can cook all sorts of yummy meals without splattering the caravan or filling it with steam and cooking smells. (I have a SMEV 2 burner gas hob). Looking forward to your next video 👍😊

As I age, I find myself using less, getting by on less, worry less. I love the min lifestyle. I spent my life so far, chasing the dream that we were told to chase. That dream makes others profit from our worry, work, and sacrifice. In a few years I will shut the door for the last time on that life, lock it, and throw away the key (well, recycle the key) and then go see the oceans from a sailboat. That's exactly it! Most people simply aren't aware of their over consumption and trash production. I'll see people walking out of grocery stores with carts full of plastic bags, food inside. Random fun fact about the swimsuits: I worked as a Maritime Archaeologist a couple of summers, and swimsuits go through a LOT of wear when they're constantly rubbing against wetsuits that are put on, then pulled off, then put on again, etc. and so on EVERY DAY. So most of us girls just wore a quality sports bra and fitness shorts. They held up a LOT better, and then after you dried off, it wasn't awkward putting your clothes back on over it since it was already something meant to go under clothes.

These are all great tips! I especially love that last one about the trash bags because I’ve just changed my kitchen trash out to a smaller bin and will not be using the bags anymore but couldn’t figure out how to replace them. I recycle and don’t put food in my trash and I use reusable menstrual pads so nothing really gross goes into my trash. I even wash out food containers that I throw away so there’s not food residue sitting in my trash stinking.

I love your channel! I would like to point out that Tupperware is an MLM/brand of plastic products. If you have glass containers they are probably Pyrex or Anchor Hocking. I used to own so much Tupperware and plastic containers and have converted to glass containers now. I love Zum products! Disappointed when they switched to plastic bottles for their sprays. I take full responsibility; so in that regard you are wrong as I do have more at stake because it was my fault. This I hope will clear up my post. I loved your tips, some i have been using for years. But what i really wanted to tell you is; you remind me so much of Jodie Foster when she was your age. It's the eyes mainly but certain facial expressions also are very much alike. It was a joy watching you and will remember you as Jodie jr. Keep making people realize the real values of recycling. Poor people have been recycling all their lives, we just didnt know that's what it was called while we were actually keeping our earth greener! Keep up the good work.

Coffee shops are insane! Look at the quick stops.. they actually have very good coffees now and multiple types. Unless you do not actually like coffee and go to Starbucks for the flavoring you will find you will like certain National quick stop brands just as well or better that you find at coffee shops...

Right on! Doctor Brommers will clean everything. You can use it to clean stuff and even brush your teeth with it ! My cat likes playing with boxes. You can buy big wipes. Seabreez is good for a night out.refreshing. Green tea is good. Paper plates work well if you in a place where you can have a campfire. Some places allow you to actually allow to build a Shit pit if you actually actually keep aware and have a shovel. No plastic!

I sweat easy as well, especially if I am cold for some reason. Equal parts baking soda and corn starch (enough to fill a used up deodorant stick when done) And then melt coconut oil and put it in by the tablespoon till you get a kind of thick paste. Spoon fill the used up deodorant stick container then place it in the fridge to re-harden. Just keep in mind when storing it that it will melt again if stored much above 95 degrees. I also made bar soap and when you use that with the deodorant your good bacteria, that works to destroy the smell causing bacteria, isn't being killed off by the commercial soaps. It can take a couple weeks for the good bacteria to recover. Once it does you could even skip showers and still not smell. I did an experiment about 10 years ago. I showered only using the homemade soap (even for my hair) and the homemade deodorant for 2 months. May not have needed that long, but just wanted to be sure the natural bacteria had a chance to recoup. Without telling anyone, I then stopped showering, also stopped using the deodorant. After 2 weeks I nonchalantly asked if I smelled during the hugs goodbye. They said no. My family is not the type to say no just to make you "feel better". Once I explained, they did confirm that I really did not have any bad body odor. I do shower more often than that, just wanted to see if the natural bacteria made any difference. All I know is when I use commercial soap and deodorant I usually start smelling by the end of the work day. That experiment to me proved that the commercial stuff may be more convenient, but the natural stuff actually works much better, simply by allowing the body to do what it was made to do. Anyway, thought I would share. We who sweat easy still benefit from staying away from chemicals and commercial detergents. Hope it was helpful info.

njgramm omg..... I’ve never heard of anyone else sweating when they get cold too!!! I sweat soooo much in my underarms it literally leaves sweat stains and it’s the worst in the WINTER. It’s almost like my body is over working itself trying to stay warm it sweats. I am going to try this deodorant trick I’ve never heard of it!!!! U might have just saved me
