30yr-old is a real piece of work but I actually imagine that untreated trauma/anxiety is at the root of some of his problems. So anxiety medicine could actually help but I also think therapy doesn't work for people who don't wanna do the work (which clearly includes a person who is trying to do it solely to get some mind altering drugs!)
