Your bullet was designed for higher velocity and won’t expand at 1800 FPS, try a Nossler 125 gr ballistic tip or accubonds. They do work

*INSTEAD of loading 308 / 30-06 bullets in your 300 BLK "you could load" SPEER brand 130 grain 30-30 BULLETS which might actually expand at 300 AAC velocity. That is what custom gun maker Bill Wilson uses in his 300 Ham'r … which is basically an extended 300 AAC BLK extra long. Regarding over gassing: I run a TUBBS brand AR-10 flatwire spring in my AR-15 and it works very well at reducing bolt velocity and reducing over gassing. Rifle also seems to bounce less with the AR-10 Flatwire spring, making rapid fire follow up shots quicker. So, using AR-10 Flatwire spring is shortening my shot to shot split times.*

My experience with these exact same projectiles is that with 21.5 gr of cfe blk behind it they do not expand or mushroom at all. Why do you think this is? And is there something I can change to get these to perform better?
@colsoncustoms89947 жыл бұрын
I just saw on "elvis ammo" where he did some testing with softer cast bullets that he then powder coated. The mushroomed beautifully.

I also see were somebody suggested 110 grain VMAX. This is also a good bullet it is a thin jacket and will expand at slower speeds I have also chronograph these out of my SPR with a 10 1/2 inch barrel I am getting 21 44 ft./s using H110 or 296 they are the same powder.

Great video, brother. I agree with your conclusions. Just not enough velocity to expand that guy and it will probably just poke a 30 cal hole through a deer. If you want a more affordable option than the Barnes, check out the 115gr Lehigh Defense Controlled Chaos Copper. I think that's what I'm going to use this year. They shot well for me and they have a low minimum expansion velocity like the Barnes TAC-TX's (Lehigh website says 1400fps!). The Barnes are pretty darn awesome, though...the 120's did a nice job on hogs for me and the 110 is what I loaded for deer last year (I never got a shot with them, unfortunately).
@theimmortal47187 жыл бұрын
Johnny's Reloading Bench Yep. Mid weight 150 grain bullets are fine for plinking, but you need the light stuff for expansion.
@CountryBoyPrepper7 жыл бұрын
Thanks Johnny! Elvis is offering to test this load in ballistic gel so hopefully we can make that happen soon. I'm about 80% convinced that this Sierra bullet is just not expanding. I think it was meant to fly about 1k fps faster in a 308 or 06. I'm not sure what I'm gonna do next but I'm leaning towards the 110 TAC TX and 296.
@CountryBoyPrepper7 жыл бұрын
I looked at the Lehigh. I'm just leery of varmint bullets that brake up and fail to penetrate. I like the weight retention of the Barnes.
@theimmortal47187 жыл бұрын
CountryBoyPrepper The 110 vmax in sbr velocities (2100-2200 fps) will fragment at the nose and retain the base, which will mushroom and carry through the target at closer ranges (0- 50 yards). From 50 to 150 yards it will retain its mass and mushroom nicely to about 75 caliber. It's one of the more tested bullets in this caliber. It's the best overall performing bullet in 300 blackout for general use.

I ran those numbers in the quickload program and it says 22.2 grains is over max pressure. Is the bullet length 1.065" ?
@unbalancedredneck57787 жыл бұрын
Your results are exactly what I found last year during deer season with the kids. I used the 125 pro hunter and zero expansion. Both deer had a 30 cal hole in and out and I had to track both down. The load I settled on was the 125 Nosler loaded to mag length with lil gun powder. Out of my 16 inch bolt gun I am getting 2150 with good groups with some expansion. I think the nosler has thinner jackets and possibly softer lead. I don't think you will get the speed out of that short barrel to get great expansion. You may consider going with a heavy bullet with a high sectional density instead. if you can not get expansion the next best thing is high sectional density to punch through. I would using the rifle for what it was intended using the heavier projectiles in the 220 range round nose. Possibly check out the heavier range of the 220 class Hawk bullets with the thinner jackets and soft alloys I believe with this combination you will be happy. Good luck!

Try the hornet he SST 125 grain try using H1 10 or 296 and they burn cleaner than what you are using and the bullets will definitely expand I am getting just over 2000 ft./s out of a 10 1/2 inch barrel good luck

Impact velocity should be over 1800 to reliably expand so 110-125 grains are our best bet.
@muwuny7 жыл бұрын
Tumbling in long rifle bullets can cause as much, if more, wounding than expansion. Look up the 7n6. The bullet travelling sideways gives a large surface area, just like an expanded one.
@theimmortal47187 жыл бұрын
Bomber Harris For only a short distance. 7n6 will yaw once in a human body, just like 77 grain smk will. The period it will be sideways in flesh is only a couple of inches before it turns base first. Expansion happens the entire length of the wound track. A bullet like the 110 vmax will send out fragments equal in weight to an entire m193 round and still have a mushroomed base equal to another m193 round that continues through the entire body. Absolutely devestating wound profile.

@theimmortal47187 жыл бұрын
Reid Badje Yeah, SP's work really well if you can get the impact velocity up above 2200. We have to use thinner jacketed varmint bullets with 300 blackout and 7.62x39 in these short 8-10" barrels. They work fantastically in 6.8 spc 2 also.

@jimhelton57317 жыл бұрын
I use the tac-tx from Barnes. If you check at Sages Reloading supply online he has the best prices and pretty fast shipping. I load mine over 19 grains of H110 that is my deer load and I buy the 110 varmegedon bullets from him and load same load data with those for varmints very close to same point of impact with both loads. Only other bullet I have loaded is the day 125 but I havnt tried them yet. Shooting out of a 10.5 inch barrel.
@robinharris6771 Жыл бұрын
You mentioned range pickup brass. Folks will abandon brass with loose primer pockets. Point is,you don't know where your brass started. Had you started with once fired,the loose primer pockets would have been a "whoa!" 5.56 brass will loosen primer pockets as pressures go up. My view (some may disagree) is that using an appropriate rifle powder (not a pistol powder) both the 5.56 and the 300 blk run out of powder space before you will get gun wrecking loads. I'm not suggesting to be careless or push the limits. You can blow primer pockets. Generally the punishment for getting your pressure a bit to high is scrapping your brass to loose primer pockets. Thats not good. It pays to slow down as you approach max. Getting more loads out of your brass matters. 50 fps or 75 fps will not make significant difference in bullet performance with what you are doing. Those 150 gr Sierras have to work at 30-06 velocities. I can't guarantee they will feed as they are more blunt,but 150 gr 30-30 bullets might expand at your velocities. At 50 yds, the BC won't matter. Worth a try!
@CorwinBos7 жыл бұрын
Great video. We use Hornady 125gr SSTs with LilGun or H110/W296 as they will consistently open down to about 1600 FPS and are proven performers on hogs and deer. Im using a 16" barrel, unsuppressed, and I can consistently shoot these under an inch, and will shoot a deer at 150 yards and in. A 150gr SP bullet will not generally perform well when you get down under say 1800 FPS as the bullet construction is not conducive to opening at lower velocities. I see a few guys saying Vmax 110s. They are good bullets and you can drive them hard, but I get a little worried about a bullet with such light construction in a bigger animal. Just food for thought!

CountryBoyPrepper We have shot 300+ lbs bucks up by us in Wisconsin where we have big animals. I have no doubts in the bullet. A stout charge of powder, just short of a compressed load is your best bet I've found. The other upside of the SSTs? They are available, and the price is right. I'll also say these are the most accurate bullets I've shot from my Blackout. I've tested Barnes, Sierra's, Speers, and other Hornady bullets, these have been the best for me.

From my research on the 5.56/.223 round in an AR and your 300 BLK would fall in the same category. The ARs has a floating firing pin, therefor you need to use a primer with a harder cup unlike your cci 400s. CCI makes a Military spec primer just for the 5.56 they would be ideal for your application. You can also use a Magnum primer or bench rest primer, these primers have a harder cup so you don't get a slam fire.
@theimmortal47187 жыл бұрын
Widow Maker I use cci 41's in all my AR loads for that very reason
@WidowMaker287 жыл бұрын
CCI/Speer Technical Services says: The CCI 400 primer does have a thinner cup bottom than CCI 450, #41 or BR4 primers. The appropriate primer for an AR15 platform is the CCI #41 primer, which helps to prevent slamfires. With this primer there is more 'distance' between the tip of the anvil and the bottom of the cup. I would strongly recommend that you pick up a copy of the Lyman’s ar reloading handbook. You could also get the Hornady revised edition as well. The data in the one you have there is antiquated especially with regard to 300 blackout.
@keithrankin61134 жыл бұрын
My Reloading data says 19.8 is max with 1680. You were 2.4 GRNs over max with that bullet. Remember Hornady books only use Hornady bullets. Pressure levels are higher in the the pro hunter bullet!

HELL FREAKING NO! The 300 Blackout was never designed for 150gn bullet bull shit. Remington pioneered the round - no 150gn ammo. Hornady first to market - no 150gn ammo. Nosler best 300 BLK ammo - no 150gn ammo. Sig Sauer created the MCX for the 300 BLK - no 150gn ammo. This shit will not die (like 40sw 180gn crap).

Sorry man, This post is like4 frikin' years old. I have been preachin' (and loading)135grn and 150grn. Nosler "sports" over Longshot for years. Why are manufacturers so set on 180grn for 40sw.? I think the FBI wants the populous to be armed with weak ammo. They figure their field agents will have the advantage with body armor while being shot with " spit ball" ammo that most people buy.
