I am interested to see the primer tests as well. I have done my 6.5 creedmoor tests on large rifle primers and H4350 and just finished loading the same load for small rifle primers in Lapua brass. I have always found that a heavier crimp works better than using the ball powders in 300 Blackout. I have switched to using Magnum primers in a heavy crimp

I worked up a lil gun 300 boload with the 125 tnt. 17 grains gave exceptional accuracy Sub moa. Winchester primer getting 2214 average. I have a ruger American 16 inch bolt action.

Johnny, spherical powders often work better with magnum primers. If you redo this experiment and use magnum primers you’ll get more consistent ignition and velocities.

I absoluetly love the Speer TNT. Inexpensive, accurate, and very effective on game. I load 18.7 grains of H110 for my 10.5 inch barrel and get just about 2300 fps.

Brass was usually Starline or Fiocchi (range I used to work for sold a ton of Fiocchi ammo so it was free for pickup), or I would convert Lake City 5.56, but you need to back off a few tenths on the powder charge if you're running converted 5.56.

Oh yes...the primer decision! A bit overwhelming... I have cci400/cci41 and rem7 1/2 in addition to I think 5 different powders. From what I have gathered from past shoot sessions- CCI 400 are out. The #41's do well but have to say what batches I've run with 7 1/2's seemed to perform very well. They are hard to come by so my go to primer for BLK will probably stay with the #41's. I know a dealer that has really pushed CCI BR4 but haven't tried yet. I feel ya with all the variables...damn!...

Not sure if you are still reading comments on this one but i have had outstanding results with 300 blk using shootersworld socom powder in both subs and supersonic ammunition. you might wanna give it a look. my 16 inch anderson carbine gas home build upper zeroed at 100 hits dead center of the 30 inch gong at 300 yards if you put your dot at the top of the gong. so ~15 inches of fall between 100 and 300. bullet is hornady 147 grain fmjbt. I plan on testing the tnt soon.

Yep, love lil'gun in the hornet. It does have wild SDs at times, but it is also very sensitive to the type of primer you use. It is very temperamental until you pass the first velocity peak and get to compression. The behavior of LG is different based on whether it is a bit loose or compressed. Hot primers when loose, cooler primers when compressed. Another issue you will have with LG in the 300BLK is that the deterent layer is VERY slow. Quick Load will not properly model LG burn rate due to this. You need a longer barrel as burn rate speeds up more than other sphericals once it passes the deterent layer. That's why all of the sphericlas had bad SDs: the barrel is too short, methinks.

Sometimes the bullet does not like the barrel/gun. I've done same rifle, same primer, same case, same powder, different bullet and I turned ugly groups into pretty sub MOA groups. Reloading and I are in a love hate relationship. I just can't quit her. 257 Roberts with 90gr "yote slaying" Sierra BlitzKings is my latest project. Like your videos Johnny.

Reloading 300 blk out with 220 berrys bullet and 12grains of CFE blk. Factory cartridges measuring 2.09, the book says 2.2. Love the way it cycles at 2.09. Any comments,or something I should chage? Your videos are very informative, Thanks

If you have H110 try that with the speer 125s. My load is moa and hits steel past 300 yards in sbr. Makes jaws drop at the local matches.

What COAL? Seems that he is using 2.1" which seems a little long for this bullet. I use Hornady V-Max, z-max and SSTs and those are 2.05-2.1" COAL, but those have a plastic tip which makes the bullet longer. So logically for these ones the COAL should be shorter than those for the same amount of seating depth.

Win small rifle are my primer of choice and rem mag primers in lg rifle. Sapping uppers is a good idea that was alot of shift with the scope and its ok if ya spend a lil on hookers and coke

Everyone has some small piece of advice for you on these comments. My only 300 blackout barrel from BA is 14.5 inches, and crazy accurate. My 10.3in 300 blackout is a faxon, and is so so. I only obtain moa using 110gr Vmax with a rear bag to steady that short of a rifle. Don't give up brother.

I recommend that you try a "V" shaped shooting bag instead of a bipod. Also use a rear bag. The longer the bag, the less wiggle. I didn't think it made that much difference until a guy at the range showed me the difference. It seemed to remove about 0.1 mil of random left-right movement.

You'll notice the best groups with 2.075 oal. 125gr speer. Just an fyi. Many shooters now use that OAL.

From everything I've read in the past several years, the Federal Magnum primers seem to be "hottest". In densely packed loads in .308, I've used the Federal LR Magnum, and in black powder loads, I use the Federal LR and LP Magnum primers, on the advice of Mike Venturino, who did a thorough analysis of primers for use in black powder cartridges. I'd be interested to see the effect of shooting the exact same N110 loads through the 16" barrel, just for grins. Also, with the Lil' Gun velocities all over the place, like the weird ones from yesterday, the magnum primers might also settle those velocities down. Not all "ball" or "spherical" powders are hard to ignite -- think W748. In the short barrel, at supersonic velocities, conventional wisdom would have us think that the faster burning powders would give the best performance, allowing the majority of the powder to burn in the barrel, and create velocity, rather than burning in the can, where the pressure is wasted.

Speer 125 TNT's are my go-to for 300 Blk. I was sorry you didn't do a Vid using 296/H110, or did I miss it? In any case, they shoot well in my Rosco 10.5, with H110. Enjoyed your Vid using CFE-BLK, as I use it for everything 300 Blk 150 grain and over. Great with 208 Hornady's Sub-sonics.

The bullet base to ogive measurement on these 125's would be gold to me if anyone has some laying around and could check real quick. I had really good luck with the 130 grain hp's seated out long in a lr308 and wanted to see if the 125's had a longer or shorter distance to the ogive. A longer distance would allow me to seat them out more and get closer to the lands and / or have more of the bullet in the neck of the case (currently those 130's are only being held by around .200"-.250" the way I have them loaded, can't remember the exact recipe off of the top of my head).

I'll preface this with I have never loaded 300 blackout. I imagine it would be like loading most any other cartridge though. Having said that I would start with my best powder and test all the primers you stated except the Remington's. Call me crazy but the performance I have gotten from Remington primers in the past has been less than mediocre at best. I'm also wondering if weight sorting the new lot of brass might help with the strange flyers you get. There's been quite a few where four shot groups looked pretty good but a flyer turned the group to horrible. Just something to try maybe if you think it would be worth it.

You think 18.8gr of Lil'Gun for 125gr bullet is hot? Hodgdon data shows up to 21(c), and Hornady manual is max at 20gr. I put 21 gr in a case just to see what it looked like and I laughed...pretty sure I wasn't gonna get a bullet seated with my LC case filled literally to the top with powder. I went with 19gr, and although I didn't have my chronograph with me, there weren't any pressure signs at all, and actually a very nice, zippy load out of my 7.5" AR pistol. Cool flame ball, too!!...LOL

Johnny, great videos and appreciate the work. Wish I'd seen this one before I loaded 125 gr. TNTs over 19.7 gr. of Lil Gun and WSRs... 1500 of them . (Hodgdon states 17.8 gr. min. -21 gr. max.) so I though I was in about the middle. Trying them out 1-26-18 thru a diamondback 16"/pistol gas. If I don't blow my face off; I'll report back in the comments. Looks like 450s under n110 would have been much better. Using a Lee Turret and Pro Disc for powder and noticed when I have to jam in a primer or bullet it increases the powder load by up to 1.2 Gr. Decreased this variance by closing the Hopper valve to 1/2 open. (less vibration settlement.) Will be shooting over a Chrono at 100 yds. Thanks

I've always been told that mag primers with ball powder and standard primers with stick powders. Stick needs more burn time in the case and ball powder is harder to light off and it wants a quick burn. Just what I've always been told

Considering these are magnum pistol powders designed for revolvers using straight wall cartridges and charges from 10 to 30+ grains in barrels from 3"-7.5" or so, and considering most slow rifle powders are burned within about 2"-3" of barrel, yes, the barrel is long enough to burn all the powder. That is exactly why the 300AAC works so well with short barrels.

Johnny, two things about using the longer hand guard. The KMR would be to small for the Omega to slip inside. And also I think there are some pictures of what happened to a hand guard that someone shot inside of with a brake. I'm not sure how a flash hider would do. www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/2016/06/28/dumb-idea-handguards-past-muzzle-brakes/ I do think it would be a more stable rest though. But you produced some good groups with the Rainier barrel. I also had a Burris P.E.P.R mount, mine would not hold a zero, and shifted zero every time I would remove and reinstall(no matter how tight I made it). Yours seems to be doing well on the 223, so I doubt it is that. I am rooting for you to get a good load worked up. I'm curious if it can be inconsistencies in the brass causing some of those flyers. I have been told in the past, to remove the flyer shot brass. I'll admit I haven't done that yet, but I may some day. Some of yours have been really far off the group. Keep up the good work!

Question! I have a Sig MCX with a 9” barrel and a 1:5 twist rate. I want to use these 125 grain TNT bullets for supersonic loads at around 2100fps, but am worried that they will come apart due to Sigs 1:5 twist rate. Do you think it’s a legitimate concern?

I think your just asking a little much of a barrel designed to do its thing inside 50 yards 99 percent of the time. Actually, the 300blk was never meant to be built with a 16" barrel. In fact, Advanced Armament Corp, who created 300blk from the Whisper design, optimized the cartridge for use with a 9" barrel. Some of the trouble Johnny is having, imo, has a lot to do with his use of standard primers and negligible crimping.

Here's an idea could you use h335 in 9mm. It's more of a survival question red parachutes are falling from the sky but I just ran out of tite group but I've got an 8 pound jug of h335 and 1000 9mm bullets laying around (primers included) is it too slow to fill the case enough to poop he bullet out?

Able you to re-test this using Trail Boss for subsonics? Very curious to see if these things will expand at ~1050fps. In a bolt gun this would be amazingly quiet and if the bullet still performs then it's potentially still very effective on varmints.

Love the channel and the tests you do, what do you trim you cases too? My 300 blk I use a case that’s cut down LC brass @ 1.358”, I use 15.4 grs H110, CCI 450 magnum primers, and a 147gr flat point bullet, with OAL @ 2.095”. And I’m getting 3/4” groups @ 100 yards.

This is killing me. I really want your 300blk to shoot a great group. seems like it starts to then the last shot........ well i'm rooting for ya....... Lapping the upper is pretty much a must if your looking at accuracy and will keep scopes extremely close to the POI when switching them between guns. The tool/kit is around $30,(ebay) it's easy to do, keeps everything inline for best possible performance. Just got a rest called "the 7 rest" from caldwell. I'm digging it, works great on all sizes of ARs even with 30rd mags. might solve the short barrel bi-pod issue. super lite, $21 on amazon.

There is no Winchester 296 “Rifle” powder. There is only Winchester 296 powder (or H-110, same exact powder). It can be loaded in cartridges appropriate to its burning rate whether they be long gun or handgun, I.e. .357 Magnum, .41 Magnum, .44 Magnum, .300 Blackout, etc. Even the .30 carbine!

I am looking at 2.128 OAL 20 to 21 grains of CFE with this bullet. How sensitive is this cartridge to OAL ? I found a greater risk to too long an OAL and kicking bullet out. I got great accuracy with this bullet with powder 4227 2.120 OAL 17.6 grains powder CCI 41 primer

In Lil Gun, as you saw, 18.2gr is about max on FPS and with a 16" barrel I get 2250fps to 2300fps with under 1 MOA accuracy. Lil Gun likes the longer barrels. AR-Stoner Barrel, LC Brass, CCI 41 primer, Lil Gun. 2.075" OAL Lee factory crimp medium. That gives you constant release.

Im trimming at 1.358. With a 2.06 coal with. W296 really dirty leaving soot. With fed small rifle primers. Do i need mag primers?

Stay with the TNT and the short barrel. Most people are only building short 300 Blackout pistols these days. I load these bullets with W296 @ 18.2-18.3 gr.
