I use the MK4 as my Zoom video conferencing mic for work. It is connected to a Behringer XR18 where I have the 1176-modeled limiter in the audio chain. I manage enterprise programs for a large entertainment corporation - having exceptional audio has a positive impact on my ability to influence outcomes. I commonly host more than eight Zoom calls a day across seven time zones. The MK4 has yielded very favorable comments. I have also used the MK4 for stringed instruments including harp, piano, violin, and acoustic guitar - I've been very happy with the results.

in this series, a KZbin setup for newbies would be popular. shotgun, broadcast, lav. I hear many channels so hung up with shotgun mics when a lav would sound much better. I don't think many people understand the best setup. Also, mic technique add into that video.

In the 60's and 70's, I was a VO artist in Hollywood. I started before the invention of the SM57/58 or the EV RE-20. We did voice overs for commercials, TV, movies on every kind of mic imaginable. Sometimes an RCA 77 ribbon, sometimes a Shure 55s, sometimes even a hand held crystal, almost never any kind of condenser. Once those 57s came out, they were on nearly every VO boom in Hollywood. The RE-20s were used more in FM radio studios. Generally, the concept was "These actors know how to use their voice, all we need to do is record it".

I just can’t NOT say this. I bought my 1966 AKG C12a microphone, complete with power supply, cable - New, never used in 1979 - for $300 from the nephew of Telefunken’s U.S. distributor in the 1950s. It was a birthday present from his uncle that he didn’t want and finally, someone came along (me) to help him get rid of it. He was thrilled to have $300 for that useless box. I love the mic and the story behind it.

The quality of the Worker Bee at under 100 USD is hard to ignore, and if you have not yet listened to the new King Bee, it is definitely worth a listen. Nice sounding mics, great prices. The only things I would advise is with the first batch of the new King Bees, I had several with ground issues. You have to hold the mic at the base to discover the ground issue, so keep this in mind. The other 'thing' is the King Bee II is HEAVY, which is useful information to consider depending on your intended application. But again, very nice mics.

I love this new style of videos! The only selection, I completely disagree with you is the Audio technica AT2020. There are just a lot of other mics, that cost around the same or even less and offer a better sound in my opinion. Like the MXL 990, the MXL 770, the Presonus PX1, the Mackie em-91c, just to name a few. I also think, that some dynamics like the SE v7 might work, too.

Thanks for this, Bandrew! As a Pro Vo, I really appreciated that you optimized the budget by getting a single mic. I agree that you should get the best you can afford vs. getting the cheapest mic you can buy. Funnily enough, the MK4 and NT1 were my first two XLR LDC's! I used the MK4 for a couple years until it got damaged in an accident, then went for the NT1 to try a different sound, and it actually paired better with my voice! (Gave it some added warmth. The mk4 was quiet and clear, but bordering on sterile, at least for my voice.) I've since graduated to a MKH 416 and a Gefell m930, but I still recommend these two all the time for talent looking for affordable options!

I like this subject. The Beyer TG201 is a fave on snare top. You may have noticed it’s a little bright!?!! Perfect without EQ on top snare use and it simply cannot be overloaded. Period. TG is the current model. Many years earlier it was just M201 and to my ears sounds better. I have 3 different vintages and usually start with the vanilla oldster. Each newer is brighter if needed.

Hi Bandrew, for the sE7 and sE8 it was emphatised that these are small diaphragm condensers. For the AT2020, the diameter of the diaphragm has not been mentioned. A lot of buyers/users think that the AT2020 is a large daphragm condenser (abviously, due to the form factor of the mic), although it only has a diaphragm with a diameter of 16 mm, so it is definitely not an LDC. (And the same goes with the Behringer C1/3, too.)

Love the reviews Bandrew. The '3-pack' section started getting real interesting as a toolkit for different voice - to offer a mic based on the person coming in. One variation > Think you could pair up with a female KZbinr on some of these as some mics will favour a feminine voice (most reviews online are blokes which is missing a big ole section of the world). Realise also that sometimes, budgets is what it is, and we just need to settle on a jack- of- all- trades option (e.g. SM58) to cover all voice types. Never heard that M201 scoop... nice :) 4:55 If its good enough for the Beeb then..

Perhaps my situation is less common than I might have guessed: mixed content production. With a basic broadcast dynamic (PodMic) on a mic arm, a decent SDC (Oktava MK-012) boomed overhead, and a decent headset Mic (ModMic) I find I can capture acceptable audio for almost anything I care to do in my office/workshop. I bet a more mobile filmmaker could get similar flexibility outdoors with a combo of basic broadcast dynamic (for voiceover in a non-treated space), a wireless lav (Rode or Hollyland or DJI, etc), and a basic shotgun mic (Rode NTG, VideoMic Go2, Deity D4, etc.) for around $300-400. I’m curious what you’d recommend for “collections that cover the most different scenarios”.
@thomasjdurfee
@thomasjdurfee 3 жыл бұрын
Neat video. I liked how you saw it as a way to solve a problem given a constraint. Budgets are one kind of constraint, an increase $400 would still give you plenty to talk about (Rode NTG's, Deity, MKE600), another approach might be to think of other types of constraints, like using pencil condensers for voice over, or large diaphragms for acoustic, or out of frame mics while streaming. Even if the use might not be as they are "designed" it would be interesting to hear about how you approach those constraints, and how binding those constraints actually are.

I LOVE this series, and yes, you should definitely continue in a similar fashion where you create collections based on higher price points. My suggestion is to consider a financial threshold - say $500 to $800 dollars - whereby you would allow yourself a little wiggle room with choices, rather than dealing with a fixed price point. Excellent, professional, and useful content as always. Keep it up brother !

Very nice! I was a bit surprised to see the EV RE320, which you originally didn't seem to like much (and you do say it's not your fave, but it's nice to see it included). It's on my 2nd boom arm, the alternative to my go-to SM7B, for uses where I want a little brighter sound, and I like that it's cheaper than the RE20. I like the format of this video too.

I picked up an RE320 one time when I saw it on a Black Friday sale for $150. Hard not to at that price!It’s my overall favorite on my voice. I have the head covered with a $3 foam windscreen to tame the plosives, but it also mitigates the boostedness of the highs. The only obnoxious part of owning one of these is the shockmount situation. It has no internal shock isolation like a handheld mic would, and to avoid covering up the ports that allow Variable-D to do its thing, you need a shockmount specifically designed for this family of mics. I ended up going with the 309A because it was only $20 more than the Auray, but I see nowadays H&A is selling one for $30-40
@theglobalzrecordingproject
@theglobalzrecordingproject 3 жыл бұрын
@@majahanson311 I agree. The mic 'as is' is a tad bright for my liking. However, adding a foam windscreen tames just enough of the highs to make this a very nice sounding mic for voice. The windscreen balances out the sound and the results are quite satisfying. I like this mic.

For future videos like this, I would go for a video that goes through microphones and overall setups for people that would be doing the most common forms of videos online for spoken word. Reviews, video game streaming, let's plays, v-logs, and podcasts. I mention this because I feel voice actors and musicians are already going to have a lot of the info they'd need from watching individual mic reviews and going through how each one of them sound for the ones that seem within their budget. And these are going to be people that have some form of inherent talents that the average person may not have, such as having a good singing voice, being a good guitar player, being a good actor, or being great at narration. The average person on the other hand that just wants to be able to make videos to post to KZbin, stream on Twitch, etc. may not always have the time or the affinity for tech stuff, may not have the talent for singing or acting like others do so those applications aren't important to them, and having guides on setups and full landed costs for a budget in the same video can be very helpful to have (especially if an older video on a subject is a bit outdated or there's new tech/mics to consider). I think a new video looking at good podcast/KZbin video type microphones costing anywhere from $150 to $500 would be interesting, and then looking at the landed cost of everything all together with decent XLR cables, a mic stand/shock mount (if the mic doesn't come with one), a pop filter, audio interface, and phantom power. This can be so someone can have an idea of the additional costs that would come when you include all the equipment one would need, and the approximate shipping costs if you buy things online. Then showing how these things could be set up in a room that isn't too treated, like a room of an average person doing online streaming or KZbin videos. It would definitely be a video that would be on the lengthier side to make, and the filming would need to be thorough to show a proper setup with the cables and the gear, but I think it would be a great addition to the 'How to' videos you've already uploaded that may go through individual things for beginners but not all of them together, and going through the price points of cables that are at least a step above the simple Amazon Basics type stuff.

Hey Bandrew, just a quick question, which of the 2 solo instrument mics do you think would work better for violin? Great video as always!
@Podcastage
@Podcastage 3 жыл бұрын
I would lean towards the condenser to get a more realistic capturing of the violin.

Amazing video! Could you do one similar but for drum recording? I know the price point will differ a lot, but would love your perspective on good bank for the buck for drum recording. Regards! 🤟🏻

So, I am loving your channel, so informative! I am wondering which microphone you would choose between for voice overs….the baby blue microphone, which you said is one of your all time favorites, or would you still go with the. Rhode NT-1?
@Podcastage

Probably NT1. After years it's the one I still go back to. Just all around amazing package.

Hey Bandrew, I have an interesting question for you. I build custom mechanical keyboards and stream these builds, what do you think would be the best setup for streaming this? There would generally be voiceover AND a keyboard sound test in one stream

Blue Yeti mic maybe? Since you can adjust/choose the polar pattern so that it can catch the sound from in front and the back (bi-directional).

This would be my podcaster's kit: Shure 545SD $92, Shure A81WS windscreen $30, Shure A55M shockmount $22. That's $144, now get a whole second set so that you can do live interviews or have a cohost. If you look around on KZbin, you'll find other people claiming a SM57 + that huge A81WS windscreen sounds a whole lot like an SM7B. The 545SD is kind of like a vintage looking, switched SM57. If a 57 is preferred, it's only $7 more per mic. That would actually pretty much get you the POTUS outdoor podium setup

I have been struggling to find a mic and pull the trigger for a while now. Anyone have any suggestions for someone who is getting into voiceover and who is also a singer of a metal band? I have a higher voice for a male and I currently use a blue Spark Limited Edition, and I deal with some major sibilance issues :(

Hi! I think Audient ID14 mk II will be more decent alternative. There are 2 headphone jacks too, 58 dB of gain (+10 dB of digital boost via mixing panel) and it's specs are slightly better (Dynamic Range, ADC/DAC converters and headphone outputs). Or another option. SSL 2+ (62 dB of gain, 2 headphone outputs). Don't confuse with regular SSL2 (it has only 1 headphone output).

Two things. 1) That’s over the budget of this video by more than 10%. 2) I haven’t used it, but I actually ordered it a few days ago because if I’m doing SDC’s, I need to test it.
