Alan Taylor and Tom Scholey compare a £300 Reel with a £60 model. The results are surprising...

The Tackle Tarts will always go for the more expensive pieces of gear regardless.

You can still be a tackle tart and buy a smart 60 quid reel.

I’ve serviced and repaired carp reels for 15+ years. I’ve never taken a match reel apart but if carp reels are anything to go by then there not much difference to the guts of them. Only noticeable difference is that a reel from 10-15yrs ago was built so much better.

I will still stick with my trusty Mitchell match reel which is now over 50 years old and still going strong. I think some fishing gear is to catch the fisherman and not the fish .

I disagree with you regarding how long these reels will last. I fish at least once a week and more often during the summer months. I have a Mitchell Match that is at least 35 years old and still going strong.

Could you compare the ninjas to the new daiwa matchman reel at 50 quid and then maybe compare both of them to the shimano sahara fj reels ?? Surely they are the best reels for around 50 quid

Lol, maybe you guys should actually have an understanding of what your talking about before you make claims and statements as fact. It's definitely a bad look. BTW, the only thing magseal does on that reel is protect the clutch and possibly the line roller bearing. No ferrofluid in the gears, why would you add metal dust to gear lube? Please take a look at some part numbers and you'll have a better understanding of the real differences between Daiwa's 100/300/500 dollar models.

For me personally. Diawa for rods and poles and Shimano for reels. That combo has never let me down.

I remember going into my local shop and wind testing a few of these top end reels…. Daiwa Tournament, TDR’s and TDM’s. In my opinion I felt the TDR was the best solely on that test and also cosmetically. A little out of my price range so I went for the TDM and it’s just been brilliant. I do think the Ninja’s are very nice for its price range but them top spec reels are different gravy. I have to agree that I’d sooner have a top spec reel than rod as the reel is like the engine of a car.

I think how you play a fish and the rod is more important than the reel. just taking fishing up again , not been for about 25 years. Had 20lb + carp on cheap Shakespere reels back then no problem. Fishing now is carp mad in general and got far to technical and camo crazy , fish have poor eyesight and don't care what you're using , bait presentation is the important bit. Nice gear is nice to have but not the key to better fishing just a personal choice coupled to your budget.

Sad part is that even if you decide to splurge on Daiwa reels you can never get the best in all aspects in one reel. The Tournament are heavy like a pig, the N'ZON PLUS LT have a crappy internal design and lack the grease from the factory, the DAIWA N ZON LT looks and feels like knockoff of a Chinese knockoff and the Ninja is just a reel for the folks that want a product with the label Daiwa imprinted on it. On top of that all my Daiwa reels and everyone else's I know that uses one have the "Daiwa whine" fresh out of the box.

I have Shimano match reels that are 25 years old, in fact I used one today. Any half decent match reel should give years of service if treated properly. Carp reels are a different matter, as are pike and beach casting reels. Casting out and winding in 4 oz leads or dead baits on big pits puts huge strain on components and gearing.

Hi guys thanks for doing such an interesting video. Ive got a few cadence rods and reels and about 3 years ago i got a couple of cadence cs10 3000 reels which are around £120 and i do like them but with money being so type ive always liked the look and peoples option's of the ninga reels. So if possible if using an 11ft waggler for general float fishing which size and specific cheaer diawa reel would you recommend. Plus if using a 10ft max feeder rod which reel would you recommend for that? Brilliant video again much appreciated.

If gearing is the only difference, we're talking 5 times the cost. Go for one at around £100. Plenty of good reels in that range that will last over 5yrs

I had daiwa rod and reels. Feeder rods need guides change (they scruff line quick). The cheaper feeder reel are best buy on the market today.

Tom........Errrr I'd hope a £300 reel {Tournament} lasts more than 5 years lol. I've had a Ninja getting on for 5 years now and I've had no problems other than line getting behind the spool when windy.

Its hard to purchase a "bad" reel, especially from an angling shop with pro tests/opinions/advice, id say its materials used. Stainless steel/carbon etc...massively contributing to weight, balance and life span as explained. Great vid, would like to see more vids like this across tackle 👍

I have managed it! I bought a very cheap Coonah reel that is still working well after being mistreated for several years but then bought a couple of slightly more expensive Asian reels ( can't remember the name..sugiyama or something like that and they died after a couple of weeks. Needless to say, I wont be going cheap again!
