Very true with 300 RUM factory loads are like 90% of max. Another big advantage is you can find ammo much easier. My local gun store here in PA had some factory ammo. This is a big consideration if you travel to hunt or don't reload. You could go the custom route with the 30-378.

Are you reloading for your 300 RUM?
@jwdundon9 күн бұрын
I've owned both those cartridges. I've also reloaded them, a lot. The weatherby is a monster for getting stuck cases, it's a real pain in the ass to hand load. The 300 rum is like loading a 30-06 nice and simple. That is a MAJOR factor for me. To REALLY use all the powder, you need a 30"+ barrel ... Without weatherby I get a muzzle flash 10 ft long and 2 ft across it was quite impressive! But, a lot of wasted powder.

Once again, a cartridge with the Weatherby pedigree is leading the way. Just as when compared against the 30 Nosler, which appears to be another fine .30 caliber cartridge, the Weatherby leaves nothing in the brass, velocity and ballistically speaking. I have had mine for over twenty years. It's still as accurate today as it was when I compared my first three shots, to the three on the sub-moa verifying test target, that came with it.

Obviously you have never loaded a 3378 by hand. About 1 out of 5 cases get stuck! It's a real nightmare with a double radio shoulder the 300 rum it's as easy to load as a 30-06.
@bustabass90259 күн бұрын
@jwdundon If you mean 30-378, not "3378" you're "obviously" wrong... on both accounts. I have a 30-378 Weatherby Mark V Accumark that I have had and handloaded various cartridges for over the past fifteen years. Not one single issue sticking or otherwise with any of them. By the way, I also handload for my .340, .300, and .257 Weatherby rifles. All double radius cases. All high velocity cartridges. No "1out of 5" stuck cases. Perhaps you should get someone to teach you handloading.

I hear of people loading the RUM with 230’s and 245’s well into the 3100FPS range. Makes me wonder what someone could push the 30-378 to. With a super long custom chamber, and hand feeding incredibly long rounds like a 245 EOL, the powder capacity of the 30-378 is quite incredible. I also want to see a 6.5-378. Or at a minimum, a 7-378.

Well, 20ish years ago Barnes made a mistake in one of their reloading manuals and had them 10 grains of powder heavy on the 30-378 Wby Mag. My brother had some loaded and in his Sako TRG-S when he touched it off it case hit the bolt with so much energy that you couldn't see anything on the back of it except the imprint of the bolt (writing etc was gone) and the primer was vaporized! I'd have LOVED to seen what the velocity was through a chronograph, but I guarantee you it was FAST! (didn't hurt the rifle either)!

I knew a guy with one of those LSS rifles in 338 RUM and it was a very nice gun. Probably would have chose the 338 over the 300. The 300 Wby is as big as I would want to go personally and think the 30 Nosler is the best of them all.

I own the Rem700 LH LSS in 300 Rum. Factory 26" barrel w/KDF brake. Action and recoil lug bedded in Devcon steel infused epoxy, barrel channel. Trigger-Tech Special trigger set at exactly 1.5 lbs. She'll shoot 3 180 grain Accubonds into 3/4" at 100m (110 yards) going 3350 fps from the muzzle. The velocity edge goes to the big 30-378 Wby with handloads. One of the prettiest rifles out there. I also own a Weatherby Mar V LH in 378 Wby. It's Magna Ported, the porting looks hi-tech but does very little so shooting .375 300 grain Sierra boat tails is always an adventure lol

Remington, Winchester, Hornady all introduce new cartridges the desert them in about 10-20 years. Remington usual mistake is under loaded huge cases or inadequate barrel twist rates. The 8 mm Remmag was anemic with a 185 gr @ 3080 fps mv . This could have been a 185 @ 3300 or 3400 fps mv. There was a 200 ( or 220, but probably 200 ) gr @ I think 2800 +. It could have been 3100. Bring a lot of these cartridges back with a few tweaks and fix those really good calibers. If the 7mm-08 can make it the 280 Remington can. Match the 30-06 energies but with a 140, 160 and 180 gr bullets. Also the 35 Whelan should be a standard cartridge , it's been waiting forever.
@jamespmullin21753 Жыл бұрын
Neither are better than the 300 Weatherby mag . The 30-378 is a joke, the ammo costs well over $100 for 20 rounds. 300 Weatherby can be had for $70 for 20 rounds. 30-378 only goes 200 feet per second more than the 300.

@@johnwilburn8319 hello John. That rifle was probably a Remington Model 8 or later on a Model 81. Sleek like family of rifles that paved the way for the lines of semiautomatic rifles that followed from Rem, Winchester, Browning and so on. In reality the Model 8 really also paved the way for the slide action (pump) rifles that followed. Sadly I think the slide action is dead now adays. The semiautomatic market is alive and well thanks to the AR, but the 8,81, 740, 742, market is in the history books. I wholeheartedly agree with you that the old Savage 99 in 300 Savage is a classical little darling. I so wish that with modern CNC machining some of the old classic like the 99, 8, 14, 71, just to name a few would come back to life. It's just a dream, but we are allowed to dream. Have a great day.
