Hi there, I actually recieved the spec sheet from toyota and can confirm they rate it at 100kg bare. With the factory roof rails, they have taken 5kgs off so stock standard with rails, the roof loading capacity is 95kgs. I hope this helps.

I doubt any roof rack manufacturer is going to do the engineering checks and certifications of toyotas roof and give you a figure. That would be toyotas job so I wouldn’t be putting anything on the roof if it’s not stated by the manufacturer. Poor form Toyota

Any car with a rooftop tinnie is illegal, unless it goes on a canopy that is certified for the weight and engineered, you will be not covered in an accident, i rang around for months with insurance company’s and manufacturers, all told me there is no way it’s legal or be covered for warranty or give out insurance to cover it
@happyknife8785
@happyknife8785 Жыл бұрын
And......why? If it is under the vehicles roof load capacity whats the issue? Why is the canopy different? Still forms part of your insured car, so it cant have anything to do with weights then
@Mr_RPE
@Mr_RPE Жыл бұрын
@@happyknife8785 as many insurance companies have mentioned if the canopy is engineered to take the weight and is build and engineered for the purpose to hold a water vehicle with the correct weight that is plated. If a crash or accident would occur and it is not secured as engineered you will not be covered( as in the car) boat also needs to be a seperate insurance to cover the boat
@WildTouring
@WildTouring Жыл бұрын
That makes zero sense to me. Your telling me insurance companies have told you they’re okay with you carrying a boat on a chassis mounted canopy if it’s built/engineered to carry a boat. But then not okay with you carrying a boat on a boat rack bolted to your roof, that is built/engineered to carry a boat? If both are engineered to do the task, and don’t exceed weight or size limitations, what exactly is the issue? My tinny came loose on my boat rack while I was off-road, slid over the car and dented the roof and the door of the Dmax , I had no issues getting it repaired through insurance earlier this year. They didn’t ask what rack I had, what it weighed, how it came loose, dimensions or any of those details. It was assessed and approved from the other side of the country and repaired locally.

My Toyota towbar says it’s good to tow 1500kg capacity yet my RAV4 can only tow 800kg braked. The tag info on towbar has mislead car mechanics and dealers. As you said you have to do your homework and work out yourself what you can and can’t do and lots of people couldn’t be bothered to do so. You also need to work out GCM because Toyota’s 4WD don’t always give you much Pay Load weight.

I put 150k on mine over 7 years. Fairly hard kms (much of it offroad and loaded to GVM/GCM). I had what I would consider minimal dramas - a cracked guard, cracked AC evaporator and a one off random software issue with the immobiliser (required a tow truck to Isuzu for recoding of the keys and resetting of the immobiliser unit). I think they’re a really good no frills all rounder - comfortable enough to commute in, decent offroad and can tow a reasonable sized van. Like most vehicles they really need decent tyres and suspension before they’re loaded up with gear and taken offroad. Otherwise they’re pretty good to go 👍🏼

I think you might need to look at the State laws for max carrying capacity on your vehicle. I think here in WA it’s 100kg and you need an engineers certificate to go beyond but I could be wrong.
@WildTouring
@WildTouring Жыл бұрын
The only thing I’ve ever seen remotely close to that, is a vehicle safety bulletin that the Department of Transport released. Which basically says anything over 50kgs need to be tested by the rack manufacturer and rated. All of the racks I’m looking at are rated 👍🏼 “Carrying material on a roof mounted load rack is dependent upon a number of factors. Generally a load with a mass exceeding 50kg should not be loaded on a roof rack. However, where a roof rack manufacturer has had strength tests performed on a specific type of rack, a mass heavier than 50kg may be carried providing it does not exceed the rack manufacturer’s recommended capacity. Where the vehicle manufacturer specifies maximum roof rack loads, this capacity should never be exceeded regardless of the rating of the roof rack.”

So put it in a nutshell, if your roof rails are rated at 200kg, you buy a roofrack thats says it has a carrying capacity weight of 200kg, dont go by the rack capacity cause your still bound by the rail capacity, so rails are 200kg then add the weight of rack that might be is 75kg, so your now down to rail capacity of 125kg. This is static weight car not moving, the the rating becomes lower while driving and farther more when off roading. So you see people with racks and a rooftop tent and i bet they are over weight on the roof rails. This was just an example.
@WildTouring
@WildTouring Жыл бұрын
Yeah that’s often the case! And then on top of that most vehicles have a roof load limit - so you’d go with whatever figure is the lowest.
@anthonydoherty1599
@anthonydoherty1599 Жыл бұрын
That’s not accurate for many vehicles, including the 200 series. There is no reduction in rhino racks weight limit when off road on the 200 series. They specifically state that on their website.

The part you’ve written about taking the weight of the rack in to account is true. For the 200 series, the rhino rack platform has a rating of 150kg. The rack and backbone system itself weighs 42kg, so you only get 108kg of carrying capacity (whether on road or off road, doesn’t matter).

If something fails Toyota won't give 2 stuffs what an aftermarket manufacturer claims, if there's no specified roof load limit you'll be poking in the dark everytime you load up the roof. Warranties have been denied for far less black and white issues than this one, especially where Toyota is concerned.
@WildTouring

@WildTouring if there's no load limit specified for anything other than a genuine Toyota rack you won't have a leg to stand on come a warranty claim, reading betwren the lines the only way to actual get a load limit on a 300 is to fit the genuine roof rack, seems like maybe a cunning ploy so you have to purchase from Toyota at a severely inflated price to safeguard yourself against any issues down the road. Car companies will try absolutely anything to get out of fixing your car, we've have an absolute shit fight with Mitsi about getting an engine turbo issue sorted and they Initially denied warranty due to the lift kit, took 3 months and 2 different dealers to get a resolution.

That’s the weight limit for the specific rack/rail, not the roof load rating for the vehicle (because there isn’t one).
