Casualties: 201 greeks (which their names are know until today) and 6400 persians. With simple maths this means each greek had to fight against 9 persians! 480bc battle of thermopylae: 300 spartans + 700 thespians vs 300000 persians(!). Result: Win for the persians. Casualties: 1000 greeks and 20000 persians when each greek had to fight against 300 persians!! They lost killing each one of them an average of 20 persians!!! 479bc battle of plataea: 40000 greeks vs 120000 persians. Result: Win for the greeks. Casualties:10,000 (Ephorus and Diodorus)1,360 (Plutarch)159 (Herodotus) greeks and 117000 Persians!!! Now figure out from only one example from a very small period of greek achievements history, why all Greeks were, are and will always be proud of our origins...

Don't completely fall for this stuff, superb as it is. The ancient writers who lived in that time do not agree if the Spartan constitution was really like this, or if they were more or less like other Greeks. Herodotus, who spoke to many men who actually participated in the Persian Wars, describes scenes like these, but he also talks about Spartans taking bribes, wanting to surrender, etc. Herodotus' account is really believable -- and the story he tells is complicated as hell itself. Like real life.
