In this video I compare the $300 Seiko SKX013 against the $3000 Tudor BB58. Is the Black Bay Fifty-Eight 10 times better then the SKX013?

GAW, you did a great job comparing these two watches. I own the skx013 and it’s a great looking watch. I have been considering buying the Black Bay 58 to add to my collection and your comparison helps me a lot to narrow my choices. I also think that the price of the Tudor is absolutely justified given its quality overall and in-house movement. The Geneve stamp reiterates the fact that this watch is held to a higher standard than other Swiss watches in this price range (at least in my opinion). Thank you very much and keep up the good work!

Both great watches. I've got a Seiko SKX007J1 for work, gym, everyday etc and I've got a Tudor Black Bay Steel for special occasions - I prefer the steel bezel version as it has a date window and I think has more wrist presence. Obviously the Tudor is a better watch but is it worth 10 times more? hmmm probably not but I love it and I believe watches are about how they make you feel wearing them and are a way to express your taste and style. I have other watches but if I'm totally honest I would be happy with just these 2 for the rest of my life.

Well said! Both the Seiko SKX and the Tudor BB have it's own place in the collection as you said. Of course the BB is a luxury item, but if we compare it to similar watches in the same price range, it offers a lot of value. I think that's part of the reason why it make you "feel great", other then the great design and quality. Regards GAW

What does that actually mean, when you say “the Seiko is overpriced”? Do you mean that the SKX should really only cost $100 instead of $200, and that the SKX is objectively equivalent to other $100 watches in quality (like, maybe, the Vostok Amphibia)? I’m genuinely not trolling you - it’s just that lots of people, including many collectors, really enjoy that tier. And there are reasonable debates over the relative quality and value of watches within the $100 to $300 range. But my sense is that you’re not really interested in any of that - you’re just reinforcing that Tudor is much more expensive, and that that premium is based on objective factors, including but not limited to quality of materials and craftsmanship. More or less on target?

I have had my BB58 for just over a month now and I absolutely love the watch! A perfect fit for my 6.75 inch wrist it has broken in and is now running at -2 seconds was running within +4 to -4 (within cosc) but has settled down now to -2. Everything about the watch is perfect with two minor exceptions: appears to not have anti reflective coating on Safire crystal and the lume is just ok... I got an excellent price on watch on bracelet for $3278 . The BB58! Is my first dip into a luxury watch brand and After wearing this watch for just over a month I cannot go back to a Seiko . All my other watches feel substandard compared to this watch!

Fantastic and very solid points. It is truly remarkable that you can get a cool mechanical old tec timepiece with a legit, broad, longstanding international diving history that can last 10 years for 250 dollars. For the 3, 250 bucks every two or three days - I ll move the minute hand the 3 millimeters - lol. That being said I have an Omega PO , Hamilton, and a few other aquisitions related to this marketing driven , "pursuit of who knows what - certainly its not about knowing the time " . lol. Both the Seiko and the Tudor have excellent lume and 200m depth. Seiko even goes an extra step on the SKX series being a ISO 6425 certified diver. The Tudor 58 should be about a grand less than it is. The Seiko is priced right and a great watch for the money. Tudor 58 is overprices IMO. I've been in the watch hobby for 15 years now and have concluded the watch industry has gone of the rails with prices. $10k for a Rolex SS submariner is just insane and puts me out of the new buying game indefinably even though I could easily afford one. Even the previous generation 16610 which I own, at $6k retail with the usual 10% discount was the the max I could justify for a SS watch that likely cost Rolex less than $1,000 to make.

Thanks for the great video. I own these two watches and they are my two favorite in my small collection. If I could only have one, I think I would take the Seiko. It is easy to replace, cheap to repair (also doesn't require dealing with Rolex, which can be a headache) , easy to regulate, has a really great case, has a day and a date, has super great lum, and has nice fat spring bars. I also love the bracelet on the Seiko just as much as the one on the BB58. I don't fret over its accuracy and fit and finish because it is low cost. I don't worry about damaging it. If it is lost or stolen, I have a new one waiting to go in my basement... Though I must say, the Seiko gets very little wrist time since I got the BB58 :) The BB58 is special, and I am never selling it.

@@ericfelger My Tudor Black Bay Chrono after several months of ownership loses 1 second... a week. That's even better than the Omega 8500 on my Seamaster. The 6R15 movement on my Seiko Ananta, which definitely a better movement than the 7S26 movement on the SKX, has gradually lost more and more seconds a day after several months. I had to have it serviced after 4 years. It was still working as expected, but not keeping the correct time. Many might find that losing over 10 seconds a day is still somewhat accurate. They probably don't care as long as the watch keeps ticking. But a watch that doesn't tell time correctly and requires very frequent adjustments to do so is not good a watch. My Tudor has a service interval of 5 to 7 years and is guaranteed to stay within COSC chronometer standards within that period. Oh yeah, the MT5813 on the Tudor also has other interesting features such as: 1) Quickset date change without non-correction range, meaning you can change the date without regards to the time whereas on most automatics, you shouldn't change the date when the time is between a certain range. e.g. on the 7S26, you shouldn't change the date between 9 pm and 4 am or else you risk damaging the gears of the movement. 2) Silicon hairspring ensures the power delivery isn't too affected by magnetism (push and pull), temperature changes (expansion and contraction) and other environmental factors that affect metal hairsprings on less sophisticated movements. This also greatly helps the MT5813 remain precise without regulation for longer service intervals. 3) The MT5813 movement is only 7.23 mm thick. In comparison, the 7S26 is 7.2 mm thick yet the MT5813 has a much larger 70 hour power reserve AND is a chronograph movement with all the latest tech (column wheel chrono with vertical clutch). The MT5602 on the Black Bay featured in this video has pretty much the same features as the MT5813 except for the chronograph and it's thinner too since no chrono. So you see, that extra money you pay for is not just how the watch looks. It's also skin deep. Sure, you can spend $300 on an automatic watch. A somewhat accurate watch, yes. But a precise watch? No. If you want an automatic watch that is precise even in adverse conditions, you'll have to spend more on one that has a far better movement. If you want a precise watch which is not necessarily mechanical, a quartz is the best option really. When you realize all the effort they make in making a mechanical timepiece that actually keeps correct time in the most extreme conditions, it's the moment you begin truly appreciating the craft of watchmaking. Most who have just gotten into the hobby of watches through Seiko do not realize that yet. When they do, the gulf in price between this Seiko SKX013 and the Tudor Black Bay make complete sense. All that R&D money well spent. In the end though, it all depends on how much you're willing to pay and how much you're willing to compromise. There is no right or wrong answer. Buying a watch is a matter of taste after all. It's understandable why Seiko gets a lot of love. They sell automatic watches with many, many designs that are both affordable and accessible, and robust in a sense that they can technically keep operating for many, many years without service. They won't keep good time without getting serviced occasionally, however. For most people, being off by a minute a day is the least of their concerns. I mean, we all have cellphones that keep correct time, all the time. But for many of us that love watches, knowing the CORRECT time from looking at the watch on your wrist, and not a phone, is one of the most satisfying things.

Funny how people don't realise that people with Pateks look at your "measly" $3000 watch as child's play. There's always a bigger fish my friend, realistically they are all good watches, But if you want to play the quality because of price game, You will lose every single time because your $3000 watch is peanuts to an $80000 watch. And that person won't win either because there is a more expensive watch. My point is, build quality and overall finish only increases marginally at $3000 more or $50000, etc. I love tudor also, so don't get me wrong.

With a 6.7“ wrist I prefer 38 mm and 39 mm watches. I could, sorry, afford and buy the Tudor or even a Rolex Submariner instantly but I won‘t. A Rolex could be an argument because its investment and will keep its value. Tudor? But I‘m simply not that deep into watches. € or $ 1000.- would be the highest price I‘m willing to pay for, well, such a profane thing like a wrist watch.

The Seiko is a great watch. I have two dozen watches, some costing five figures, and my Seiko SKX009J has established a rooted seat in one of my watch boxes. Those calling it junk never actually held junk. Of course the Tudor is better done in every respect (except for actually getting the job of diving easily handled which both conquer no problem), but from my personal perspective, the Tudor is absolutely not 10x the watch. The connection to Rolex keeps the Tudor from being priced at $2000 like it should really be.

I noticed water droplets appear underneath the crystal overnight and immediately sent it in to RSC for checking and was told the seals on the crown is faulty and they replace them under warranty (I still haven’t got the watch back after 4 months now). I recently started buying out of warranty and preowned seiko skxs 007k/j & 009k/j (013k is on the way) and did the usual tap water washing without any issue. That tell you something about those cheap ISO6425 certified watches.

The SKX normally just looks plain. But next to the Black Bay, it's downright fugly. The dated design is liked a lot by many though. But it's definitely not very sharp from a design standpoint. There is no practical justification for buying a mechanical watch. In all he was surpassed by the quartz watch. Therefore mechanical watch is pure passion and status. Watches are practically the only jewel of man and show good taste, social position, etc. Luxury brands are unmistakable. I would not trade my Seiko SKX 013 for a Tudor. Firstly because tudor does not have calendars. Secondly because they cost 12 times more to do the same job (skx 013 = $ 230.00 in amazon, jomas shop, island, etc).

I was turned off by the SKX’s non-hacking movement, although if it is off that amount in a day, why bother with hacking. I ended up buying an Orient Ray II, which is not a Diver’s 200M, but has a better movement with manual winding and hacking. Mine is running about +-1 sec/day. They can currently be purchased for $150. I think the Orients are finished better than the Seikos. I also bought a Citizen Promaster Diver and an Orient Triton, both Diver’s 200M watches. The Citizen is obviously more accurate than any mechanical and the Triton runs about the same as the Ray II. The SKX has too many deficiencies to compare well against a Tudor or Rolex. Compare the sub $500 Triton against a Tudor or Rolex and you’re left justifying the 7 to 15 times price difference based on non-functional differences. Ponder that a Submariner costs 50 times the price of an Orient Ray II. The price difference is maintained by one of the most bizarre free markets in existence. People will pay 15 to 50 times as much for the Rolex name. The wine market is similar. Cars are not even close.
@WatchesAndCars
@WatchesAndCars 5 жыл бұрын
Agreed! The Orient Ray/Mako is probably the best alternative to the SKX007. It got a bit better movement then the SKX as you said. This is pure speculation on my part, but the movement in the Orient is probably very similar to the 4r36 (NH35) from Seiko. And the 4r36 is very similar to the 7s26. When I had the Mako USA II I did love the watch but the case finishing on the SKX013 was perhaps a bit better. That is of course my own opinion. Why I compared the SKX013 against the BB was because they are both sub 40mm. People who are looking for a BB58 is probably looking for a 40 or sub 40mm diver. Both the Ray/Mako and the Triton is bigger then that. Other then that, the Orient is a great choice. Regards GAW

You call the skx a tried and true tool watch with a workhorse movement with the best bang for the buck in its price range. Huh. First and foremost a "tool watch" must have the best movement that can be made to fit the price point. The 7s26 is the cheapest, poorest time keeping movement seiko makes. In all fairness it can't be a tool watch because it can't preform its only function well. A quality watch and l don't mean an expensive one must keep reasonably good and consistent time. There are some skx watches out there that keep great time, that however is the exception not the rule. To have a dive certified watch with a bargain movement is like having scuba gear with second-rate pressure regulator. The skx is the lowest priced dive certified watch because no other company would risk lives on a dive watch with a dirt-cheap movement. It is pretty though. Cheers

I do agree with some of the points you made. The 7s26 is a pretty basic movement and it's not the most accurate (from the factory). But the 7s26 is know to be very reliable. It can run for a long time without needing service, it can take a beating without breaking etc. Time has also tested this movement regarding reliability. That's definitely things that can qualify it as a tool watch/movement. You also said that it must have the "best" movement that can fit the price point. Keep in mind that you can find the SKX013 for as low as $180. From my experience the 7s26 is definitely the best/most reliable movement you can find at that price point, so what you said holds true for the SKX. Regards GAW

@@WatchesAndCars. You didn't read all of my post it seems, if you can't make it well at 180 dollars, it shouldn't be made at all. I would never dive relying on a 180 dollar in house dive certified watch with questionable QC and the cheapest movement seiko makes. It's quite obvious you only look at confimation bias information regarding the 7s26. Cheers

I have owned a lot of Seiko's and I have never had any issues with them. I do know that there have been some issues with the bezel/chapter ring not aligning, that's why I thought it was important to mention it in the video. From my own experience regarding the Seiko's I have owned (many of them had the 7s26/7s36) I think they are well built and performed decently. Especially my SKX013/007. I think there is a reason why so many watch manufacturers use the Seiko NH35 movment these day (the NH35 is basically the same movement but with added hacking & hand winding. Very similar accuracy/reliability). Probably because it performs decently, reliable and easy to repair. So many people enjoy the SKX line. In my own opinion, I definitely dont't think they are of such a bad quality that they should not be made. Regards GAW

@@WatchesAndCars. So, you have owned a lot of seikos. The question now is why? There is a guy on KZbin, l can't remember his name, he owns 5 blue seikos that look the same to me. Again why? You both love seiko, l get it, but to try and convince me it is a good value and a quality watch is not going to happen. Perhaps your KZbin name says it all, except great and affordable are mutually exclusive, maybe good and affordable. The 7s26 is comparable to the nh15/6 the nh35 is comparable to the 4r35/6. Place the nh35 in the skx, beef up the bracelet a little and put a sapphire crystal and you would have a good not a great watch. When people make purchases they often seek confirmation that they made the right choise and defend that choise much like yourself. Logic it seems is off the table. Good luck on your endeavors, l would consider stopping at 100 seikos and perhaps try another brand. Cheers
