I have worn my Black Bay 36 nearly everyday for the last 18 months - it is simply outstanding! It has scratched any itch of even looking at other watches. The fabric strap that was supplied is the best fabric strap I've ever owned, incredible quality. Many years from now the Tudor Black Bay 36 will be regarded as a highly sought after watch. Tudor stunned people by announcing a 36mm sport watch when everyone else was producing 42mm and up. The idea of keeping a top grade ETA movement in it was extremely smart - keeps cost down, will make servicing even easier down the road, and ample parts to source. The build quality of the BB36 is on par with the Rolex Oyster Perpetual 39 that I owned. There's nothing I can say poorly about the BB36.
@frankdirscherl23457 жыл бұрын
Excellent video, but here's my take on the watch... I have this watch...I see no negatives, only positives. For me, the BB36 is the perfect watch! It not only features the top variety ETA 2824, but it has been heavily modified by Tudor, with extra shock protection and other features not found on the typical, even high-grade ETA 2824. Tudor have really worked on this, they didn't just regulate it or add decoration to it. The crown sticking out too far? Not at all! I've been wearing this, on my left wrist, pretty much every day since last October, and have had ZERO problems with the crown on the wrist. It doesn't dig into my flesh (and I have the watch on fairly tight) at all, it doesn't feel any different to any other watch in that regard, so no con there IMO. Haven't noticed any problem with legibility of the watch, so whether there is or isn't any AR coating hasn't been an issue. It's about the most legible watch out there, haven't noticed any major issues with glare at all. Another non-con for mine. Does this watch have an identity crisis? Of course not! It's one of the most versatile luxury watches on the market, making it an invaluable addition to anyone's collection. It works superbly well as a sport watch, a watch you can wear while swimming or out on adventures, but it's also subtle enough for use as a dress watch (better than the similar Rolex Explorer in that regard, as it lacks the much more casual looking 3, 6 and 9 numerals on the dial), slipping very comfortably underneath a shirt cuff. It fits for just about every situation life throws at you. You can't say that about just any watch, but this watch does exactly that. For me, it's the perfect watch! Too conservative? Sorry, I don't even know what that means. The dial is perfect, simplicity at its very best, aesthetically pleasing and perfectly balanced, and the case size is perfect, and not just for the smaller wrist IMO. That's conservative? Nonsense! If this is meant as a con, I don't understand it at all, and perhaps you don't fully understand this watch, TGV, if that's your way of thinking. Again, excellent video, but your cons just don't add up to me. Cons for con sake, perhaps?

Some complain that the snowflake hand takes up too much space on the 36..?
@byrong15615 жыл бұрын
I have to agree with almost everything you have said. I have a Black Bay 41 and also a Explorer 41mm and the Tudor is better in every way imho. The dial is crisper, the steel bracelet is more comfortable, and it keeps better time than the COSC certified Explorer. The only issue I have with the 36mm is the size of the applied hour markers. They are too big in proportion to the case size. Its compounded by the fact that the silver coloured surrounds on the hour markers kind of blend in to the lume, which makes the hour markers look even bigger than they are. This problem goes away with the 41mm, which is way better proportioned.

I'm sorry but his criticisms do hold some weight. The crown sticking out unprotected is a problem for people who use their hands. Otherwise I do like the watch.

I bought the BB36 last week on the bracelet. I couldnt be happier. It takes all the points I love from the Sub and the Explorer and gives an amazing every day casual/dress watch with that classic rolex oyster feel. For the money, you get a perfect every situation classic watch with a timeless charm. And you can dive with it if you want. Looks perfect with my Dinner Jacket Black Tie, works well with my Levis and T shirts and goes great with a Sport Jacket and Loakes. Its my perfect do it all watch. Love it to death.

This is a dress watch that can take a dunking and/or beating and still tell you the time in the dark. I like the concept. As a small wristed dude I appreciate the size. Black band and you could wear it to a formal wedding; while being tee-shirt casual on a nato. Pretty cool.

Ross Anthony agreed, didn't mean to say it like that. What I meant was as someone with small wrists, i don't like wearing the bigger watches. Even 40 to me is a bit much personally, where as people with bigger wrists can comfortably go bigger or smaller ya know. But yeah, 36 is amazing for anyone

The rose on the dial isn't coming back. Tudor have been removing it from their watches. Enjoy it on the crown.
@RandomPersonAJ7 жыл бұрын
Frank Dirscherl why is the rose being replaced by the shield? I feel like the rose has a closer identity to the name of tudor than the shield. I also like the rose more than the shield so it's a shame it wont be on this dial.

It's interesting you said it's almost the only watch you'll ever need. I think you meant it is but was afraid of commitment. Lol. Anyhow, GQ put out a very compelling article several months ago as to why the air-king is the only watch a man will ever need. This was before this black bay 36 started gaining attention. I think Tudor owns this now. As for the crown, it's part of its DNA so I'm glad it's there and have no problem with the size. In fact, if you own this watch, which I do, you should be open minded about size or return it quickly. What I also would like to point out, is we are now looking at the next generation of vintage watches and I think Tudor knows this and just planted a very big seed in future brand recognition. This will have a cult following for sure.

My friends who are not into watches think it's a Seiko. My friend who is little into watches thought it was a Rolex at first. And that's the best thing about it. Understated. Things that I really LOVE about it? Snowflake hour hand (duh), superbly designed dial with pleasing proportions and the "ROTOR SELF-WINDING" typography that adds a little quirky smile to the dial. Sporty and in-your-face attitude on a bracelet, but subtle and elegant on a leather strap. It is my only watch. I'm so happy I decided to buy it :)

I just went into a Tourneau store and tried on a Blue Dial BB 41. This combination completely solved all the cons TGV spoke on. The Blue dial makes it much more legible without the AR. The bigger 41mm case blends better with the crown length, and the added pop of the blue dial really make this watch something special in my opinion. I am going to have this watch very very soon. It took all I had not to walk out with it on my wrist, but I’m sure I can find better deals online.

Great video as always! I’ve had this watch over a year and now wear it the most often. At first I thought it looked a little brash and put a fabric strap on, then it wasn’t right either. Nor with a tan leather strap. Then a dark brown plain padded leather Geckota, which has suddenly made it look very much what it can be - a classic and refined yet rugged tool watch, that can be casual, smart, swim, or explore. It simply is Tudor’s version of Rolex’s Explorer, in the same way as the Black Bay dive watches are Subs. However - the Tudor divers don’t quite have the finish of a Submariner, but the 36 has an excellent finish. It is a very smart watch. I personally prefer the snowflake hands to the Rolex mercedes sign. Be warned the bezel picks up light swirl scratches whatever you do. I think it gets scratched by my shirt sleeves. But that goes with the rugged appeal the watch has. Also not forgetting the watch’s purpose: when fully wound, it keeps very good time. I clocked within a second a day, but this varies as it unwinds.

A brilliant review and thank you very much for it. Great education about the origin and history of the Tudor name as well. Glad you went into detail about the leather strap. Mine is on the bracelet, and I think the thickness of the clasp would bother me as well. The leather strap looks much nicer than I thought it would be from the Tudor website photos, high quality and a lovely, rich colour. Mustard? At first the protruding crown bothered me a bit, but when I see how easy it makes gripping when I adjust the time, it makes sense. Also, a small but very important detail for me is the excellent operation of the crown, and how smoothly it screws into place when it is tightened. A minimum of pressure required on the final screw and it feels very secure. Very like the Rolex, which I have always admired, perhaps they had an influence on the engineering of this one. One of the strongest feeling and robust crown mechanisms I have seen. But that's just me and how I feel, not being much of an engineer myself. I always regretted selling my little 36m Explorer 1 a few years ago, and now no more regrets. I was all set to get the 2016 updated 39m Explorer 1, until I tried this little beauty. The bracelet, by the way, has no half links. However, working with the three micro adjustments within the clasp, I am able to get a perfect fit. On my 7.5in wrist, I love how the watch looks and it is probably the most comfortable watch I have owned. And there have been many. To me, the finishing especially the brushed/satin finish on bracelet and case is even slightly better than the Explorer 1. And I prefer the clasp, not as long and a bit thinner. Certainly thinner than the clasp on the strap. Sorry to ramble on. Even though I had the watch for a few months already, I loved seeing your video and how well you engage with everyone watching. Cheers, Carl

I absolutely love it! I have been waiting for this review for a really long time. To me this is a very differently refreshing watch. It allows you to dress up and dress down while being a tool watch. The perfect watch for a one watch collection. I have larger wrist and generally wear 40mm and up, however, this watch has an aura of watches from the 60's when people wore watches that were a bit conservatively sized. Thanks for the detailed review! However one question I have is whether the lug width is 20mm? I have tried to look online and it seemed as 20mm wide straps would do the trick
@robertfeast76914 жыл бұрын
I really like this piece. I actually like it more than the Explorer. I really like that it doesn't have the diver bezel. I always think they're superfluous. I also like that it doesn't have a date window. The only thing I'm not keen in is the strap and clasp. I don't see the advantage over a normal strap buckle. It just seems an over complication. 36 would be too small for me so, it would be the 39mm for me. It may be my next watch. It's between this and the newer Nomos Club with 200mtr water resistance.

It made me chuckle when you said “I would love it if they release a Black Bay diver at 38mm with a rotating bezel, but I don’t think they are going to do that”. Please step forward Black Bay 58, maybe Tudor were listening to you?! (Ok, it’s a 39mm but oh so close!).

I had the rolex air king 14000 34 mm, it was too small for my 7.5 inch wrist. I looked at the oyster perpetual 39mm for $5700, the new air king for $6200 and the explorer for $6600. I decided on the tudor black bay 41 heritage with the steel bracelet. for $2950 dollars . that leaves me with more $$$ for other watches. this is a quality member of the rolex family of watches, I am very pleased with this watch.

Great video! I've mixed feelings about this watch, I do like it, but why call it Black Bay? In my opinion it should be a new collection in the Tudor line. I really miss the bezel and that's probably the main concern with the "Black Bay" name. Minor thing, but Omega, for example, with the mid size Seamaster gives you exactly the same watch as the bigger brother. I would have preferred the same thing with the BB 36. Thank you very much! Best regards, Michele.

The BB36 should have the gilt dial and hands from the Heritage Black Bay and the same riveted bracelet. That would take it one step further.

Except for the crown sticking out and the lack of A-R coating, it’s perfect.

I wish there was a watch as small and as versatile at a more affordable price range. I saw one of these in an AD and I've always wanted one.

Why not one from the Seiko SARB line? Thank you, Best regards, TGV

I love the coloured crown tube, but will never understand why it sticks out so much... Great video as always!

I think as humans we are servants to our need to pigeon-hole "stuff". I am quite content that this watch isn't easy to categorise and as such to some will have what appears to be an identity crisis. Is it a dive watch - clearly not. Is it a watch you would be happy swimming in a pool with - absolutely. It looks like it would be ideal in a business environment and equally at home in a more dressy formal environ. I think I might get one, possibly with an idea that its an alternative to a datejust (albeit without the date ;) ).

Brilliant vid!I have too many stunning watches. My Black Bay 36 just arrived. This is never coming off my wrist. Perfect in a way you can't describe unless you love watches. I like my NATO's but camo supplied not my cup of tea

Another great video sir. Still loving your new intro for every review. my favorite intro is still the "Khaki King" one but that's because I got the watch just before you posted the video.

My next purchase, though it will be the 41. I love the minimalist dial, no date, no bezel. It is a beautiful watch. On a nato very explorer/field watch but on the bracelet or leather quite dressy. The only negative is lack of AR.

This watch is flawless to me, all watches will have small areas that someone subjectively won't enjoy so much but there is nothing on this to deter me from getting it. It has to be seen on the bracelet though, that's where it really shines. It's genuinely enough to keep me from pining for a Rolex Explorer, Datejust or Milgauss. It's THAT good.

Great lil watch, looking forward to making that in house, ten it's mine for sure. TGV could you consider not showing serial numbers of the watch ? Replica ppl are happy to grab those any time ! All the best, Tom

The only con in my opinion is, the huge gap between the case and the strap is a put off. Perfect on original bracelet.

Topnotch alternative for the older 36 mm Explorer 1. Fantastic watch.

I sold my 36mm Explorer a few years ago, and regretted it ever since. Buying and selling watches, in the back of my mind trying to find an alternative. Now this BB36 comes along, and it is the perfect alternative. I am, in fact, enjoying it even more.

@@carlhaluss do you prefer the bb36 over the 114270 exp? i have the bb36 and the itch for an explorer 1 have gone

Thanks for this excellent video. I already have a 23010 Date + Day in Black and am BADLY TEMPTED to buy a BB36. Duty Free at Heathrow I can pick this up for

Thanks TGV great review. I own the bb41. The only other feature I would like to see is a date at 6 o'clock color matched of course. I see this watch as conservative perfection. I will hand this down to my oldest Son. Until then, I will enjoy it's versatility!
@NoContextOasis7 жыл бұрын
I completely agree with you an all the positives and negatives, perhaps the reason why you find it boring is because its uses the same exact hands and indices as the BB, it would've been nicer if they brought the size down to the same as the pre maxi rolexes to give it a bit be elegance and maybe change the indices to a more dressy shape like batons perhaps?
