Hey Johnny, In the interest of maximizing brass life, but also being safe what I do is sacrifice a piece of brass after "x" number of loads. I split it with a Dremel and measure wall thickness and compare to a new case. Then after another "x" number of loads sacrifice another. Soon you have a history for that brand of brass in that particular rifle. Keep up the great video's

Just started getting into this myself and youve helped me out a ton. Pretty sure im hooked on this new hobby when i thought it was just gonna be a cost cutting measure for another hobby haha! Ive still got alot of video backlog to watch but ive been enjoying every minuite of it. And apreciate that youl even still air mistakes youve made. ... From my experience Forster makes a bushing neck, bump die you could use so you don’t have to size the body every time. Then you could use your Larry Willis die on the lower body as needed. Always great videos. Keep up the good work.

Welcome back! This video is perfect timing. I too just swapped out a batch of 300 win mag hornady brass after the 5th firing and resizing with the hornady custom grade die. It too also seemed like it was working the brass too much for my liking, I bit the bullet and picked up a redding S bushing FL and a lee collet for my new gunwerks brass.

I spend a bunch of time EVERY SINGLE DAY wishing I had time to make the new Beginner's Guide to Reloading that I have planned. It's coming, but it probably won't be before summer when I can shoot in the evenings. It's a big undertaking and I need a lot of range time to pull it off. For press kits, I still think the Lee Breech Lock Challenger kit is the best value. The Hornady Classic kit is pretty great as well, but I don't think it has enough advantages to justify the additional cost over the Lee kit. You'll probably be happy with either one! For tumbling, just spend your money on a wet tumbling setup. The Frankford Arsenal Rotary Case Tumbler Lite is a really great value. If you want to try saving a few bucks, the dual drum tumbler from Harbor Freight also works. Good luck getting started!

@@samuelrisby I have the cheap Lee C breaklock press, and the break lock has no slop in it. I also have the Lee perfect powder measurer, and have had zero powder leakage using small spherical powders such as H335, CFE Pistol, CFE223, ect. If there is a finer powder, I cant comment on I'd that leaks.

Love your content Johnny ❤️ I've actually had quite a bit of success with the 2231 bullet in the my Howa 1500 in 308 win regardless of the 1:10tw. At my elevation of 1400ft the bullet is marginally stable with an sg of 1.4, but it'll shoot sub 1/2moa at 100yds with a stout load of Varget (44.6gr) moving 2575fps in Palma brass. This bullet is stupid long, at .010 off I'm at a coal of 3.175. Glad you tried this bullet, it's getting slept on a bit and I don't really know why.

Give H335 a try. Most of the particulars in 308 win. Casing is Remington, primer is Fed. Large Rifle Match, bullet is 200gr SMK, powder is H335. Lyman charging data. Been a great combo for 20+ years, so far. Give it a shot.

Belted Magnums are kinda notorious for having sloppy shoulder dimensions. My solution to prevent case head stretch is to fireform new brass using the 'moderate load with the bullet in hard contact with the lands' technique. On subsequent loading be sure not to set the shoulder back too far...I prefer to neck size only.

RA Williams I used cheap Speer 165 gn hot core jammed into lands with mediocre IMR 4064 charge to fireform my cheap Winchester brass. Then only neck size brass with good results.

I tried the 240gr SMK in my Remington 700 .300wm, also with a 1:10 twist, and I couldn't stabilize it, no matter what I tried. The best I could do was to exceed max, and it was showing pressure signs, so I gave up. My best luck has been with the 220SMK and the 210gr Bergers.

I had the Lee hand priming tool for a while. Chucked it right in the trash after a few months. I ran into the same issue with the carrier hanging up and not feeding a new primer. Switched to a RCBS Universal and never looked back.

Had the same problem in 30-06, the HDY custom-grade new dimension sizing die was oversizing the sides of my brass and from time to time would get a stuck case. Bought a set of HDY american hunter dies and the sizing problem went away. I now use the HDY hunter sizing die with the custom seating die and the Lee crimp die to get the best results out of my handloads. Same with the 22 hornet, threw the HDY custom sizer away and replaced it with a Lee die. Had a hard time bringing myself to buy the 6.5 CM custom dies but you had such good results with them that i went ahead anyway. Low and behold that set was correct and is the only set of HDY custom dies that didnt have sizing problems that i own, and i own 4 sets.

As much as i would love for you to go making videos full time I would advise caution. First to make sure it is sustainable financially so you don't have to go back to a job you hate after a year or two. secondly that you have motivation so you don't do like you did last time and go a couple months without putting out much content. you have a ton of people who will support you no mater what. just an idea for next hunting season fallow a single bullet from just being components to taking a dear and then to your favorite meal. call it "press to plate" part reloading and hunting expo part cooking show.

Paul Krieger, the custom barrel manufacturer, has tested pencil barrels against heavy barrels for accuracy. He found that the pencil barrels are just as accurate as a heavy bull barrel. What he did discover is the reason that everyone thinks pencil barrels aren't accurate. Pencil barrels heat up faster than a heavy barrel, which causes mirage from the hot barrel to move the target in the scope. This might have something to do with the fliers you were seeing. A hot silencer can cause the same sort of mirage movement of the target in the scope.

Johnny i had to give up and hand priming , i now using the RCBS Automatic Bench Priming Tool, was the best decision I made far as priming cases. I can feel the primer going in just as good as the hand prime tool, but no stress on your hand, but stay away from the Lee Auto Bench Prime, had the same thing was happen with the Lee hand priming tool as you are

I've been looking to purchase a turret press and been watching videos on both Lyman All American 8 and Redding T7. I've when back and forth, but believe the T7 would be the best one. After hearing you say you may do a video on both, plus a single stage, I was already in can't wait mode. It seems the Lyman has a few flaws that the T7 doesn't. Seeing if there are any effects for the rounds in the loading aspect would be sweet.

You're on the right track with the collet neck sizer. It can take up to three firings for the brass to fully expand to the size of the chamber so if you full length size and bump the shoulder two or three thou every time you'll definitely over size the brass. I'm sure the factory chamber is also on the large side which will also contribute to the incipient case head separation.

Also, I was watching a video about shotguns loads and they mentioned something added to the shot cup to space the 00 buck pellets... Wonder if that would fix the subsonic issues with case fill... A note on the press, it’s good to label each station, seat a batch of bullets in each, and check concentricity of each run. You might find a station or 2 to have more (possibly a lot more) run-out than the others. You may also find one that is better than the rest that you can reserve for bullet seating.

Couple things, if you got 5 firings out of brass in a magnum load, that is exactly what is expected. 5 loadings is standard for magnum loads. Also, if the brass is wearing out at that point and it is obvious from case head wear, annealing can be water effort, I get 5 reloads out of 300 ultra mag brass loaded with 87 grains of 7828, and the neck area is still in solid shape and neck tension is good without having to anneal. Just what I have seen in my experience. Cheers.

I've had the exact situation you had while sizing my Hornady brass (in .300WM) using a Hornady custom grade die. Excessive amounts of force needed to size and premature brass failures. I switched to RCBS dies and found a huge change in the amount of effort needed to size the same brass. Unlike your chamber/gun, I'm using a Savage.

I've used Lanolin/Alcohol, Empirical Sizing Die Wax, and Hornady One-Shot at various times with 300 WM. It's not the lube...it's my sizing dies.

I've loaded thousands upon thousands of rounds on my pair of hornady progressives... with RCBS dies. I struggle to load pistol ammunition that will even chamber reliably with hornady dies. Case head separations are scary, and dealing with that particular type of case stretching can be an exercise in patience. My Lee-Enfield (.303 British) would chew through brass like crazy to the point where some of the brass I was pitching after just two reloadings. One of my buddies told me it was a headspace issue, but the headspace checked out fine. Another buddy told me to try neck sizing, which actually helped - I was tossing some of my brass after 3-4 reloads instead of two. I ended up trying different brass and found out that some brands do last longer than others, but not necessarily for the quality of the brass itself, but for the specifications for its made --- turns out my buddy who mentioned headspacing was right, because .303 British seats off the top of the rim of the cartridge, and some companies don't make the rim as thick as the original specification. This was causing headspace issues, which was stretching out the brass when full-length reloading. If belted cartridges headspace off the belt, it might be worth measuring how far that is supposed to be and comparing brands. It might be the brass, but it certainly could be how the die is treating it when full-length resizing. Looking forward to the follow-up!

Johnny. Please do yourself a favor. Try the Nosler Accubond 180 grain over IMR 7828SSC. I have seen this combo under MOA out of several 300's and watched them absolutely HAMMER elk at distances from 75 to 360 yards. For large game it's the last load you'll ever need.

Johnny switch to the Sinclair shoulder bump gage to reset your sizing die, it is much more accurate than the hornady case comparator as it is set to shoulder angle. So your 300 mag has a 25 degree shoulder and the gauge has a shoulder of 25 degrees. As for sizing die go to Foester and send them the cases as they will hone the die for exact fit. Next take the firing pin out and chamber the case if the case seats easy your sizing too much. The bolt should close with slight resistance.

You need. Redding type s bushing die. And some Sinclair bump gauges. Another option is a le wilson chamber type seating die with an arbor press.

With the magnum calibers it may benefit to change out that front rest for the long sand bag style. I have inconsistent results if I free recoil a magnum. Sand bag it and roll your shoulder into it a bit. It appears to be jumping on the front rest on you quite a bit. Just a suggestion. Glad to see some magnum content.

Would be interesting if the switch from the CCI primers to the federal primers somehow contributed to the crappy grouping and stability issues with the 240 SMK - this was the first video you shot the 240 with those primers. And thought you were using your Redding press originally (back before the stock swap) not the Lee press.

Glad you did this video! I've been contemplating picking up 300WM just because of this bullet coming out. I'd like to see you pair it with IMR8133 or Retumbo. And maybe do a temperature test on 8133... The press evaluation with on target performance sounds like a sound idea. Also the sizing effort issue looked to me like insufficient case lube. Try something different or use more and see if that helps. Also since your die seems to be wanting to oversize a little it wouldn't hurt to give it a good cleaning inside and maybe a polish with a rotary tool and red rouge and see if that helps the sizing effort.

Have ever tried a scope level? I started using one and it helps with the one oddball flier. It really helped me in a consistent point of aim. They are cheap and easy to install. You have the best reloading channel out there love your videos especially the 308, 6.5cm and 300 win mag videos!

The RCBS Universal hand primers started giving me problems with seating depth. I had to back out the depth screw and use blue loc-tite to get them to seat the primers deep enough. I'm not sure if I wore them out or what is going on. I still love them for the balance of power vs feel and the way they feed.

It has been a while since this video, so I figured to check in with you as to how this rifle is doing to date. Not wanting to sound like a rifle snob, BUT... a few questions. 1. What are your expectations? 2 What is your cleaning protocol ? 3. What muzzle crown and condition is your barrel in? 4. Have you tried, just, neck sizing Lapua or Norma brass? Did you ever get the Widden die? In competition the theory of barrel cleaning goes from 50 to never rounds, it is up to the barrel. Bullet weight to twist rate, some rifles shoot heavy for caliber better than light,goes both ways. If you want quarter minute accuracy you probably should step up to a custom barrel, if you want a hunting rifle, one minute doesn't affect the deer or other game. 31:11 Regarding the hollow point tips, and their imperfections. Do you alter these or try to correct them in any way or do you just fire them as they are? Would a lopsided hollow point affect the stability of the bullet?
