Aloha John. LOVED this video! Never thought that the Shogun era had such an impact on how their food was prepared and served. Especially the choices of dishes that were prepared with such care and attention to their overall health needs. This was awesome!! Thank you for always enlightening us with wonderful stories like this! Mahalo my braddah 🤙

Admiring the dedication to recreate the actual food eaten by the Shōgun in ancient Japan. Plus eating this in the tatami room !

I've been to this temple in Kawaguchi, Saitama (not Kawaguchiko, Kanagawa), it is very peaceful. Interesting to learn of it's delicious bento history! 😋 🍱

Was catching up on Only In Japan Go live streams during a rainy day. It was mentioned this video and I was like what I didn’t see it on the main channel which has produced videos like this. I would’ve missed it and I am glad it was mentioned. Now I have to go back see what other non live videos could be on here. Great job.

This channel is a mix of videos, KZbin changed the algorithm in November so live streams and uploads are separate and the upload videos are getting no suggestions in feeds :( hopefully it turns around.

Very interesting! The meal looks healthy & tasty! Those of us in the U.S. could learn a lesson in going back to basic, whole, seasonal foods. Thank you for another enlightening lesson in Japanese culture!

Delish John! Love the simplicity of what Daimyo ate back then. The essentials, flavourful and good for the body meal for the long haul on the Nikko Onari Kaido!

My daughter and I ate at a Buddhist restaurant by the bamboo forest in Kyoto. I was not sure what everything was but it was very good. I spoke with another woman who also went to Japan but she said she only ate at McDonalds and those types of restaurants. That is sad.

9:17 I totally get it. I never had to put stuff on my white rice but it wasn't anything special to me. then my gf from Cambodia would make rice every morning. After a couple years of that i wouldn't really miss it when she was gone but when she came back I loved waking up to the smell of rice in the rice cooker and hot fresh rice with whatever we ate in the morning.

John, have you seen the drama “Shogun“? My high school was a Buddhist school, so we stayed overnight at Zojoji Temple and experienced training and ate shojin ryori (traditional Buddhist cuisine).
@etherdogАй бұрын
Really cool video and history, John! The music was a bit too loud and was distracting when you were explaining the meal, but you did a great job of describing the characteristics of the food, which is hard to do well.

Thanks for the feedback on this! Depends on the speaker you’re listening from but it could probably be cut down a bit for the next time :) appreciate it!

Interesting, would be interested to see what normal japanese people ate during that era if this is what shogunate had! On a separate topic, kawaguchi is another spot that one should explore more compared to other tourist destinations in tokyo!
@onlyinjapanGOАй бұрын
Absolutely! Kawaguchi is just across the river from Tokyo, an easy side trip for sure.

If I ever get to travel to Japan, I'll probably have a problem with half of the food out there. Fishes are not a (major) problem, but shrimps...I fear those things ever since my uncle 'showed' them to me when I was 6 yo. And any kind of beans equals another trauma from kindergarten xD This video is basically telling me, how much I would miss out, only because of bad memories, or not being accustomed to the flavors and texture. Especially texture.

Based on the title and thumbnail, I thought you've got access to some ancient bento that has not been opened for 300 years haha. Would not make much sense but I understand the title.
@onlyinjapanGOАй бұрын
Oh, that would be … quite interesting, but alas, much was destroyed in the countless earthquakes, fires and wars in this part of Japan. Not much that’s ancient exists without having been rebuilt. But still, it’s amazing that the menu and the recipe was found! Quite a footnote in food history.

iirc the shogun, or maybe it's the emperor, who would eat a different food every meal or something.

Shogun often lived / ate simple because it was safer - they had many enemies I bet!
