This Tokyo hidden gem is a Japanese family owned Edo style Tempura restaurant, named Tempura Mikaku, located in the backstreets of Roppongi, one of Tokyo’s busiest night spots. This Japanese food restaurant has been in business since 1931. Originally opened in Nihonbashi, it later relocated to Roppongi which is only a 3 minutes walk from exit 3 of Roppongi station. This hidden gem tempura restaurant also has a unique way of firing their tempura, with drumsticks. The owner and head chef, a former jazz drummer, is the one who started this. Apparently, regular chopsticks are much thinner and eventually break after so many washings, while drumsticks are made out of a hickory which is very strong and hard so it lasts much longer over time. This is a behind the counter view of what really happens at a Japanese cuisine tempura restaurant as they setup and prepare the meals.

Those little family run places are great. There’s a little place not far from where I live, run by an old lady who’s at least 80 years old. No exaggeration. She’s being running the place for something like 50 years, originally with her husband but after he passed away all by herself. And of course, the tempura is fantastic. And the hospitality…this is the interesting part, she just kind of brings you whatever she feels like, no matter what you order. Oh, she ALSO brings you what you order, but mostly whatever she feels like. 😆 Sometimes she fries up some pretty crazy stuff, too. But always delicious. And cheap!

It’s wonderful to see elders with such a wealth of experience and pride in their work still giving their richness to the workplace. Many countries would see making the same foods day in day out as boring I love how that Japanese still consider it as learning.

I thought I know what tempura is until one of my Japanese clients took me to a real local shop like this. The batter coating is so thin and airy. You can taste the ingredient and without feel any greasiness of fried food. Definitely miss Japan!

I needed to see this after all the tragic news about war since yesterday. I love their energy, camaraderie, and companionship with each other. Instead of living a sad life in a retirement home, they get to do what they enjoy and are good at with the people they enjoy working with. Indeed, a blessed life! Thank you for recording this video, especially today 🙏

I have to say I am from Massachusetts, USA and I don't get to see stuff like this where I live. I'm sure if I went to Chinatown in Boston I could see some things but I don't speak the language. It's really nice to get a glimpse on this shop's way of life. I love Tempura but fish is not my favorite. I think it's wonderful to hear the answers to the questions you ask everyone. I wish I could of grown up in this culture. I find it so interesting. My culture is boring lol

Shops like these make me want to learn Japanese so I"m better prepared when I go in. I went to a really nice ramen place near Kanda station and they didn't speak English but they tried so hard to ask how I liked it and I literally went back like 4 times because it was soo good. I literally adore these kinds of shops and considered them hidden gems when I visited

I wish Canada had the style of restaurants japan had. Not even the machine ordering but just the quality of food you get for the fair prices. Not to mention how fast the food always comes out. Even the “fast food” places are so much better than in Canada. I remember going to ramen shops, tempura shops like this, and even curry tonkatsu places. They were all amazing. Lets not even forget about the convenience store food. Even that kind of food is almost restaurant grade even tho i do think it is a little overhyped
