Gotta respect someone going a different route, ya get kits to stuff the Volvo I5 engines in old RWD Volvos, but he went for something completely different, I like it. Makes me curious about the IRS kit you get for the 240.

Not really that wild... stock, with a B230F, they ain't very quick, the stock seats leave a lot to be desired, at AutoX I gotta hang on to the steering wheel or I fall out of the seat, stock suspension is boat like and also not that amazing for AutoX. :P

Just real talk, the 240 ain't an exciting car, it CAN be, if ya stuff fun parts on it. But it's a durable son of a bitch, I've gotten slight air doing AutoX, and I beat cars I had no business beating with the old brick, ya can really drive the wheels off of the thing and it'll hold together still. It ain't exciting... but it's fucking tough.

It's a Renault Modular 5 Banger....that also comes in 3 Cylinder, 4 Cylinder, and the Inline 6 version.....not a Volvo engine at all. Volvo Diesel badged passenger cars, the Diesels are sourced from either Mazda or Peugeot depending on the Model. That 5 Pot has a bad reputation of grinding/tearing away the Timing-Belt teeth causing catastrophic engine damage in as little as 30,000+ mile intervals...well below the Industry Standard of 10 years or 75,000-100,000 mile intervals for an interference engine.
@dmcnamara98597 жыл бұрын
That POS I6 was available in North America on the "old-school" 240/700 Series rear drives in straight diesel and for money....turbo on the then 700 Series.The I6 was based on the same Modular VW-Audi 4 and 5 Pot which were notorious for "running away" when they got hot>> until self-destruction, and if one was lucky not to have a runaway VW Diesel, a result of shoddy Foundry-Metallurgy.... Cracked blocks, broken cams/cranks were the norm. And those Diesels like to Shred Timing Belt Teeth too long before the recommended Interval Replacement. Recent news, VW purposely built millions of shoddy 4 Pots in Aluminum/Iron Block Form.....it's the reason Golfs/Spin-off relatives have a bad reputation of burning lots of oil....even when new.Wonder why Volvo (the Chinese) have chosen Peugeot and Mazda for Diesels? They build some of the most durable light-duty Diesels on the Globe.....no such thing as ever getting a "bad" Mazda or Peugeot Diesel.

The 1960s 122/1800 cars are great platforms to build/improve upon for amazing handling and performance. The #1 upgrade I would recommend for this build (assuming it still has the stock front suspension) would be using IPD’s Delrin upper control arm bushings + urethane lower control arm bushings, add in some car-specific Bilsteins, IPD springs, and IPD 1 1/8" front swaybar... coupled with some geometry tweaks: 0.32" toe-in, -2.5° camber, 0° caster. The front suspension mods alone will give the 122/1800 series (despite chassis differences) quantum handling capabilities. The 1800S I used to own had all IPD suspension upgrades in it (plus the above recommended front alignment geometries), and was supposedly good for close to 1g of cornering force, at least on paper. What I know for sure was that in my local autocross series races (I had a mild tune and was running 4.56:1 Pow-R-Lok LSD with 205/50-15 DOT tires) I was faster than 80% of the Miatas, Triumph TR6s, late60s/early70s Porsche 911s, and Sunbeam Tigers in my classification.

Beautiful P1800! Always loved the lines on those, a timeless body. I think he is bang-on with getting a “right sized” motor and power figure. About 300 I would imagine feels just right in a car of that mass. In my heavier SS sedan, 4000 lbs/415 HP is a nicely balanced pairing, 500 is probably my upper limit for “comfortable street car” at that higher mass. For a car of this Volvo’s size, you get much beyond maybe 350 and it’s gonna start getting too high strung to be comfortable as a GT car. Note: Cobalt SS was transverse... I believe the LNF was offered longitudinally in the Kappa Twins (Sky/Solstice). My wife has a Sky with the 2.4N/A motor, and I desperately want to bolt a supercharger on to it. 😋
@ndeclari7 жыл бұрын
Yep, LNF was transversely mounted in the Cobalt SSand HHR SS and was offered longitudinally in the Sky Redline and Solstice GXP model trims and is a riot to drive in any configuration. The 2.4N/A in your wife's Sky was offered in the Cobalt SS up until 2007, which is then got re-named Cobalt Sport. There are many turbocharged options for the 2.4 that will make traction at 70MPH+ questionable.

Man I just love the shape of the old Volvos. I really enjoy old resto mods with quirky setups like these. Really it's a smart decision for an engine and trans since the ion redlines and solstice gxp that shared that engine and trans both were heavier than that Volvo and had quite decent fuel efficiency for spirited little turbos. So I'm imagining even with that tune on the engine, it probably gets great fuel economy being so light and having a modern turbo engine with much more practical gear ratios since it's not 100hp anymore and probably has like triple it's original torque lol. Great video as always Matt! Now where can I get some watches?

The LNF turbo was rated at 260HP/260TQ (in the Pontiac Solstice GXP & Saturn Sky Redline), so I'm not sure why the owner would say it only had 110HP. With the General Motors Performance Product tune that number went up to 290HP/360TQ (manual), and was covered by the factory warranty. Many owners are pushing 350HP plus with aftermarket tunes, and a larger intercooler. Other Kappa owners go with a larger turbo and are near the 400HP on stock internals.

the newer ecotec are very overbuilt engines with direct injection, sodium filled valves ,vvt, forged crank and rods, oil squirter's to keep the pistons cool, its good for 500hp stock internals and with just forged pistons upgrade its good for 750hp. its even been tested up to 9,700rpm's on stock lifters. GM is using it for a test bed to field test a DOHC performance platform before GM drops the new TT 4.2L DOHC v8, beta testing on a 4 cylinder was smart because if there were any issues they show up before it becomes a premier mid-engine corvette engine.

im pretty sure thats not a problem on the newer 2.0L/2.5L gen3 LTG ecotec not the same as engine as the gen2 LFN also thats hardly a GM only problem Audi and BMW to name a few, plus that proves my point about working out the weak points before making it a premier v8 so GM doesn't do like Ford and do ground up redesign 3 or 4 times to get it right after the crazy dumb engineering failures like popping out spark plugs ruined that engines reputation so bad they ditched it to lose any association with it.
@2112steddy7 жыл бұрын
These generation of Ecotecs were not the test bed for the new V8 that's coming out. If anything these generation of Ecotecs were the result of Northstar platform. The current Ecotec engine line(at least in the 4 cyl capacity, because they call almost everything an "Ecotec" now) are mostly carry over DI versions of the old LE5/L61 or rebranded Daewoos(used in their rebranded Daewoo Cruze). The LNF and later updated LHK have nothing really in common with the current LTG used in the Alpha platforms other than both of them being high feature turbo 4s. Also looking down at you later defense of the plastic timing chain guides, they were really only an issue on the pre-07 cars with the L61 and LSJs. Never heard any issues with any of the VVT Ecos. Still miss my LNF.

The LNF needs a bigger swap community. LS engines are so easy and cheap, but just to troll I'd love to put a LNF in my Trans Am project.

Yes this is a odd-ball but you have to love people's passion for cars. A different direction means a one off car that is cool and only you have that's set-up. I had a 84 Buick LeSabre with a 502/502 Chevy set up and got pulled over everyday by the cops just so they could be nosey as hell but like the car. Wasn't looking for that kind of attention!!! For real.
