From the very first time that you showed us this vehicle I thought what kind of mug puts all that junk on a Defender roof. It does tend to spoil the perfect aerodynamics of this sleek-lined vehicle. My own 1984, 110, county station wagon top's the skales at 2,000 Kilos with a fully necked tank. YET!!!! another money saving video from you Mike, many thanks for all the info. Best wishes from Gods county, Yorkshire Rob.

Thanks Rob! At least the pressure is off now with the 2 x 110's out of the way The 90 to do next then who knows what!? I have a video for you this weekend ! Keep smiling and keep warm! Mike

Trying this out today! What are to odds I can get the AC working again - I give it about 50/50 as its never had a charge since I've had it. Aparently it had a new compressor before I get it! - Lets wait and see!
@BritannicaRestorations5 жыл бұрын
Stick some compressed air in first and see if it holds - if it does, give it a real long vacuum and see if that holds
@timboyle31145 жыл бұрын
So the Air and vacuum worked great - no leaks - I F-ed up the recharge so the system does not have enough refrigerant to engage the compressor! Thought it was all done but took the 2nd can off and lost half the charge (Face palm!) and the compressor disengaged and now wont engage - I know the clutch works as I just fed it direct and it engaged - Need to try again! Still I'm learning about A/C now!

Top video thanks Mike. I was just getting ready to 'convert' my 300Tdi D1 compressor to an 'on-board' air system. But after this rather warm summer, i'm kinda thinking i'd like air-con for next year. lol. Or, would you know of a way to add another compressor to the engine bay to act as an 'on-board/on-demand' air system. Cheers for all you do cobber. Brett

Well here's an idea I have known people run an alternator off a belt driven off the handbrake drum......
@spitfiremk1uk5 жыл бұрын
The AC compressor converted for use as on board air works great and makes both good pressure and volume. Just need to add a little air con oil now and again. You can purchase off the shelf conversions for double alternator fitment to the front of 300tdis. (Winch challenge guys use them all the time)
@Reaper43675 жыл бұрын
@@BritannicaRestorations If i can figure that one out in a 'sexy' manner, all credit to you cobber! Great idea... i could duplicate the air-con wiring... heck yeah, you know, i think that just might work. Would have to run through a reservoir tank. Or.. PTO perhaps?... :)
@Reaper43675 жыл бұрын
@@spitfiremk1uk Cheers for that, yeah we do it here all the time. It just a toss up now between being able to inflate 35's from dead flat in under 40 seconds and staying cool in summer.. Its 43c/109f as i write this . Muggy as also.

And most of that on the roof by the looks of it! Way over the max load for the roof I'm pretty sure!
@BritannicaRestorations5 жыл бұрын
I cannot recall the roof load for a 110 but I know it is not that much - In Australia they mostly use trailers - makes perfect sense to me

2010 Defender says 150 kg in the book, but seems the early ones are 75 kg

good video. Which engine you find better, the 200 Tdi or the 300 Tdi?
@peterpeterson99035 жыл бұрын
It's got to be the 300tdi all the way - I suspect, but won't put words in his mouth and words on his screen, Mike will agree. People bang on about the 200tdi being easier to maintain which in my opinion is rubbish, in terms of maintenance they are basically identical, in fact I would argue a 300tdi is easier to maintain, i.e. a single 15mm socket on the automatic belt tensioner, swing it out the way and you can have the serpentine (aux) belt off in about 20 seconds, 200tdi is more antiquated with the alternator and it's bracket assembly acting as the tensioner. The 200tdi also has 2 aux belts (3 if AC fitted) so more parts and spares to carry. The 300tdi is a more refined engine with various main differences to make it smoother, and slightly cleaner burning this was achieved with higher pressure fuel injection. The smoother engine makes a big difference when driving as the noise is vastly reduced. The 300tdi has larger crank journals which in turn make it slightly stronger and increase the wear surface area thus prolonging life. In fact, the British Military didn't like the 200tdi and this is partly why they had so many 2.5NA's then hardly any 200tdi's then loads of 300tdi - reason - they cited the 200tdi as not being quick enough to work on (a bit like what I said re. belts and tensioning of them above) they wanted the engines to be brought into line with 90's engine architecture and some of the old style systems replacing.

For what it's worth the only electrical fault that will stop a 200 is the shut off solenoid and that can be bypassed that cannot be said of the 300 which uses more electronics but I agree the 300 is more refined overall
@BritannicaRestorations5 жыл бұрын
The 300Tdi only had an electronic injector pump on the later Discovery's and some RR's - this was for the cruise control and A/C ALL the rest were the same as a 200Tdi and had one wire to the stop solenoid Some later 300Tdi had Exhaust Gas Recirculation which is nearly always bypassed and has no effect on emergency running
@peterpeterson99035 жыл бұрын
@@bryanlatimer-davies1222 Very few 300tdi's actually had the electronics on the pump (and you can fit the non-EDC pump) it was only really fitted to the Disco Auto's though (certainly in the UK). My 300tdi has 1 wire required to make it run - fuel stop solenoid.
@bryanlatimer-davies12225 жыл бұрын
I take your point, but 2 sensors, a solenoid and a vacuum source all the more to fail !

That's an awful lot of additional weight.. hope it's not all on the roof.
@BritannicaRestorations5 жыл бұрын
The winch bumper will account for a some , but there is a lot on the roof - AND the fuel cans and water tanks were empty which would add another 65KG if full

The chassis can easily cope with that amount of additional weight. Engine, gearbox? Forget it. I bet the economy is terrible too.
