Just taken off the rear crank seal and inspected it its the original dowty and the aluminium housing is like a banana across the bottom by 10 thou, i also checked a new shitepart one and that is also got a bow in it, so when the new one arrives going to drill the 2 extra holes like the International one,great video mike

Great job Mike. Shame you have to put that engine in the car. Better to put it in your front room so you can look and admire it.

You sound a little disappointed that you cant find anything wrong with this engine Mike. I recon that you dont want to part with it. Great video, and it shows the value of a smoke machine. I,m booking a days holiday so that I can hear it start up. Best wishes from Yorkshire Rob.

Lovely job Mike, that is going to be a sweet running engine. Good engine and good rubber, BFG K02's, yes, I am the anorak that can spot tyres by their tread patterns, I promise to get out more after Covid.

Excellent Mike. Shouldn't you smoke test with the timing cover removed? Just in case some seal wants to bother down there...
@BritannicaRestorations
@BritannicaRestorations 3 жыл бұрын
Not really, as there is a wading plug hole in the bottom and smoke would leak out of there, also the machine would keep running if there was a leak

Great video and very informative. I’ve never used a smoke generator machine. How and where do you connect the smoke generator the the engine? What brand of smoke generator is it? How much do they cost?
@BritannicaRestorations
@BritannicaRestorations 3 жыл бұрын
That's easy - connect via the dip stick tube! Smoke Wizard = www.cpsproducts.com/product-details/gld-40-diagnostic-smoke-machine/ Bu there are cheaper modles

Unfortunately not everyone can spend so much time putting an engine back together. You're not a "Council worker", (an oxymoron if I ever saw one), by any chance? Just joking Mike, you're doing a great job, there should be no "come backs" with that engine.

I had a thought to myself whilst watching. When they rolled out of Solihull, where they ever as well put together and tested as this engine? I doubt it very much. Making land rovers better than land rover ever did.. 😀 Great job Mike

Stap 00 with a 3 minute cycle time at Solihull (engine built every three minutes) most engine build technicians had barely the time to fart. But generally the engines built were of a standard above 95% pass rate. That said when the 200Tdi was introduced every engine went through a 20 minute hot test on a test bed. When the 300tdi arrived random engines were either cold tested with the odd engine hot tested for quality control.
@stap0035
@stap0035 3 жыл бұрын
@@666DW thanks for that snippet. Could you take from that, that the 300 was deemed more reliable and well built than the 200. Or was it the demise of QC at landrover? I understand that the production line is a hectic place and the time and motion muffins are watching and fart and nose picking breaks are not tolerated. The slippery slope... Look at the shite they're making now. Saying that, there are probably more land rovers being kept alive than most older vehicles so they must have had it nearly right. But as Mike says.... You can make them better.

Every engine built was leak tested after sump and injectors were fitted. Another gas test using nitrogen was also carried out when the engine was built.
