Bearmach turbo repair kit information . gallery.mailch...
Checking the pressure at the turbo is a vital check to see how your turbo unit is performing. We need to know that the waste gate actuator is sustaining and regulating the pressure in the turbo at a certain RPM. Not a highly accurate test as you need to estimate the speed of your engine under certain load.
We'll show you how with some piping and a cheap gauge.

Fantastic stuff... Learned me some and I didn't know that Bearmach did turbo internals so that's good to know! Thanks for putting that all together... I know it's hours and hours of work for ten minutes of viewing pleasure...

these videos are indeed awesome. that is kings Lynn! I have worn a groove in that road when travelling to Cromer over the years. I know it's not far when I get to the Sandringham roundabout :-)

On my Disco 300 Tdi, I reach the max pressure of 1-1.1 bar around 2000 RPM. Thanks to Rory ! ;-)

This is food for thought as I'm struggling to go beyond 70mph at 3000RPM in my Discovery 300TDI regardless of changing the lift pump for Delphi and genuine fuel filter. No fuel line leaks anymore, desedimenter gone, I even changed soft induction hoses for Britpart silicones. Bizarrely it pulls like a train but it's still not going above 70 like it used to. Perhaps the waste gate or related and barely visible pipes could be the issue!

great explanatory video. I would like to know what are the risks for the turbine or for the rest of the engine to adjust to a higher pressure of up to 1.4 bar ???

Great video, but I think he made a mistake. I think delaying the wastegate from opening is done by shortening the rod, and not by increasing its length.

there is doubt in your voice of knowing which way it is to go. Better to set it by trial and error.

I’m not 100% sure my self but my 2 scenarios are as followed. My logic is as follows (also based on the forums I have been reading). Logic 1: (I only mention this because almost every forum I read tells me to shorten the rod to delay the waste gate from opening). The spring in the actuator has something to do with pushing the rod, which opens the waste gate (I would say a diaphragm is involved inside the actuator). If you lengthen the rod the spring has less pressure on it and would require less air to push the rod, to open the waste gate earlier. Plus as you’ve lengthened the rod it’s also essentially closer to opening anyway. If you shorten the rod the spring has more pressure on it and would require more air to push the rod, to open the waste gate later. Also as the rod has been shortened it’s further away from opening. Logic 2: (what you’ve told us) If you lengthen the rod the spring in the actuator has less pressure on it and therefor will need more air flow to push the rod, which will open the waste gate later (delaying the waste gate). If you shorten the rod the spring in the actuator has more pressure on it and therefore needs less air flow to push the rod, which will open the waste gate earlier (losing pressure earlier). Conclusion: To somehow over come this you can put in a manual boost controller to adjust the amount of air that the actuator sees. Keep in mind this will probably only work if 1: the actuator and spring are good 2: the waste gate moves freely and isn’t seized and 3: the rod setting is somewhere in the middle.

I have a boost gauge (3 bar) installed as per workshop manual and it barely reads above 0. I have installed a new actuator as I thought it may have failed but clearly not, it was set to the same length as the old one. My turbo has on very rare occasions spun up really fast (1 bar) with a puff os soot/black smoke from the exhaust and took off fast prior to fitting new acuator but most of the times it doesnt seem to work. I have no air leaks in my system I have checked again and again even putting on new hoses all round. I just dont know how im not getting any boost at all ?. It is a 98 300tdi btw 220000 miles. I have just had a new turbo cartridge fiited to no avail either . What is going wrong please ?.

Thanks for the great videos! I've bought several new 300tdi turbos for friends outside the UK. They always seem to come with the casting to connect to the manifold, yet it is not usually necessary to replace it. As I am reshipping and weight costs, I have stripped off the casting and just sent the turbo itself with protective covers over the openings. Never had a problem. So why are they supplied with an (probably) unneeded casting?

I've outfitted my 300tdi 11 Defender with a separate turbo boost gauge, t'eed into the line with nylon pipe and mounted on the dash. That way, I can see what is up with the turbo as I drive. I've also fitted a handy "MadMan" monitor from South Africa (madman.co.za/index.php/products1/category/ems-units) which gives continuous readout of important values. These can vary depending on the sensors fitted, but I have EGT as one, so again I can keep an eye on how I am stressing the turbo if towing up a hill, for example. Which reminds me - some say never tow uphill with an R380 in 5th

I enjoy your videos very informative and for me it has given me some guidance.I dont have a manual, so I wondering how can I get my hands on one, does bearmach sell them, I may add I am from Belize and recently got a defender 300tdi which I'm planning to restore, any advice as to what to commence with?

+Christopher Windsor yes the best manuals are Original Technical Publications you get parts manual with the workshop books as PDF all on a DVD disc. Part number for the 110, 90 and Defender is LTP3003 here is in their catalog. www.bearmach.com/books/Edition17/index.html#226 you could mail order one? You could try Britcar www.brit-car.co.uk they are very good Bearmach distributors

I just read somewhere the best place to put the t-piece is short hose that goes to the waste gate rather than the hose going to the fuel pump. Is this correct or does it not matter?
@trailerfitter2
@trailerfitter2 6 жыл бұрын
In any air circuit, the pressure should equal unless there is air -loss. in later diesel Td5 and later there is a Manifold Absolute Pressure sensor which reads pressure in the inlet manifold Ideally this is the best place to read it from.

Also u won't loose power if that pipe is split it will do the opposite Chris- the turbo will overboost up to approx 25psi Gos like stink lol but turbo life is drastically shortened
@trailerfitter2
@trailerfitter2 5 жыл бұрын
since the pipe is connected to the injection pump boost pressure capsule how do you expect it to provide extra fuel on acceleration if the turbo is putting out more pressure?
@andrep8479
@andrep8479 5 жыл бұрын
Mine has an additional adjusting T piece (with an adjuster screw) that goes from the turbo to the waste gate actuator. Maybe I should turn that in to block off a bit of air instead of adjusting the waste gate nut. I need more air I think. It’s blowing a tiny bit of black smoke n lacks a bit of power. The other part seems ok where it goes from the turbo to the injector pump diaphragm. I don’t think it’s the injector pump (I’m not touching the fuel screw as it seems like it has enough fuel).

@trailerfitter2
@trailerfitter2 8 жыл бұрын
adjust the waste gate servo so it stays shut longer. but it is not that easy because with the increase in pressure there needs to be more fuel injected. I'd warn about this unless you have an engine in good condition you could be wrecking the engine if tweaked. Better off getting a VGT.

Have a look at the turbo here. www.allisport.com/product/allisport-land-rover-defender-300-tdi-vnt-turbo-direct-replacement-turbocharger/ Bit expensive and there are cheaper alternatives but it will give you more power at lower rev ranges. The Variable Vane or variable geometery turbo give a much better power curve.
