I was going to tell you what I was up to over the last few days - I completely re plumbed my heating system! 4 days with no hot water, but working better now. I want to fit an air to water heat pump, but I needed to re think my existing setup - in the end I stripped it all down and started from scratch!

Top tip I learnt here in Australia as they have rubbish plugs too, long live the UK 13a plug....tie a knot in the cable like when you tie a shoe lace(not the bow part, just the bit where you twist the laces around each other,) then plug the leads together and pull the cables gently. That means the cables pull against each other rather than pulling the plug out

Hi Mike, I just installed a set of those cam bearings and noticed that smaller hole. Turner they have some great products. Had to make an Aluminium installation tool and pulled them in with a long stud from front to back. Great patience to align the holes but all worth it. Making Tdi's better!!

I wish I knew about that blockheater for the 300tdi before shipping my Defender to North America. What I used instead was a 175watt infrared light bulb bought at Wallmart. Placing it behind the turbocharger it worked pretty well down to temperatures of minus 30°C. A magnetic sump heater kept the oil warm. The only drawback was crawling around fitting and removing the bits and pieces when ever we moved.

It's a long time since I've had to rebuild an engine Mike and I think at those prices it'll be a long time yet. We must have thought it dear when we used to go get the heads and cranks done over the border years ago, I was just thinking the other day how no one seems to rebuild stuff like they used to we always seemed to be taking engines out
@BritannicaRestorations

That's right. Looking back it now seems a waste of time as all the cars have been scrapped now, still we learned a lot Scrap yards here are full of decent motors now, -bodies all rusted out, but the miles they get on engines now would be unbelievable back in the day - 250,000 miles on a Tdi engine is not uncommon I think Minis used to start burning oil at 50,000 or less!

I've had the same four containers of four different types of Loctite for about 25 years and it still works as it should, hydraulic sealant, nut lock, super stud lock, and super bearing retainer. I only use it sparingly but when it's required it does it's job.

I hate doing core-plugs. Ages ago I rebuilt a Triumph Stag, replaced the core-plugs and a few months later one of them fell out :-/ Years later, I read that the Stag V8 was notorious for losing core-plugs as a result of various overheating issues (hot engine + winter weather = bad things happening) so it probably wasn't my fault but it left me a bit "gun shy". The price for the machining only sounds high cos you've gotten too used to canadian dollars. $500 Canadian is only about £300 and that's not terrible to get a block reconditioned... as long as it's done properly. I guess we all think back to the days when you could get a head skimmed for £30 as a favour but those days are long-gone. :-(
@BritannicaRestorations
@BritannicaRestorations 4 жыл бұрын
Indeed - and now there is only one engine machine shop in town now - engines today are cheap at the scrap yard, and usually worth the risk of fitting - especially something like Vortec which is pretty tough, and you can get complete for less than $200 Sadly no Land Rovers in the breakers here!

Hi Mike, Do you know of anywhere in the uk that will make those block heaters in 240v or can you get one made? I want one as my journey to work is short and in winter not ideal as it doesnt get up to temperature but I can only find inline ones and I dont like the idea of coolant flow restriction.
@MrRobmellor

Might be worth getting a 110volt transformer like the ones that are used on building sites, there are plenty on Ebay.110volts is a lot safer too. OR!!! buy two heaters and wire them in series. I,m sure Mike would sell you one.

@planegaper
@planegaper 4 жыл бұрын
As for the plus, do what everyone else does.. tie a knot at the connection end, you'll never have a problem again.. unfortunately the Nanny State has us distributing at 120v 60hz, makes wiring up for a Welder or anything Two or Three Phase expensive and time consuming.. Mind you , I'd rather be hit by 120 15 A than 220, any day, especially on a ladder.. There are good machine shops in Canada.. ask the local race drivers, they normally know who's thorough and cheap.. sometimes the Garagista is better than the big outlet, not as profit oriented.. just be sure he's not farming it out at a profit, inspect his shop, find out who does his work.. I got stung once by a shifty builder who wanted a rare set of heads I had.. it's a small world down here, everyone knows everyone.. I put him out of business (more he did it to him self) , tried to build me a leaky bottom end so i'd blow the motor and sell him the heads cheap, even had them promised to a race driver who I was pitting for, you could imagine his face when we both turned up at his shop with the pictures of the serial numbers of my heads, he'd given the the racer, saying he's have him an a couple of weeks.. There are shift buggers out there , but the inverse is that once you find a good one , you hone a great relationship, and have your engine done by someone who cares ..
