Nice bit of medieval looking wizardry there Mike with all that smoke flames and wax! Heat always seems to do the trick.

If you were using WD40, you would never get the pipes out

Never knew about the wax trick….. and the gas bottles are my favourite tool in the workshop.! Well next to the impact guns. I’m certainly using wax on the next seized job. Thanks.🙂👍

I’ve just caught up with this video after getting back from lunch, Mike. Now I see what you meant about his turbo being stuffed, and also see what you meant when you said about roof racks being a pain in the snow. Nice meeting you both.

you made short work of that, i was there for a while broke a rubber mallet, i bought a td5 regulator / release valve (old one seized solid), same fit, slight variation, threads came out clean so was lucky, though there is hairline cracks to the housing but at 1bar pressure cant think it would be that bad, looks the part, cerakoted, stainless bolts, new cartridge from ali express, liqui moly exhaust paste

Glad it got an oil change to give the new turbo a fighting chance as old oil looked done. Wonder why Garrett don’t just supply a turbo core like Melett that way it could be changed on the vehicle if the bolts don’t shear, maybe that’s the reason. I fitted a Melett core 2 years ago, seemed good quality/price at about £100 and no problems with it, did not want to chance a cheaper Britpart or NoName turbo core.

just out of curiosity, when towing across NA , you keep the LT230 in neutral? but is it not eventually going to give problems? Do you lock the steering or is it simply faithfully following along?

Put the range lever into neutral and it won’t put any strain on the drivetrain, when towing with a fixed A frame it follows the tow vehicle perfectly like a trailer obviously the steering lock needs to be disabled so the steer axle can self steer.

Alternatively, use heat on the entire area of interest and then use cold air on the male threaded part. The cold can be achieved by holding a can of compressed air upside down. This is usually enough to make the parts come apart without much effort in the form of a breaker bar. Obviously the easiest way is to buy new pipes. This will also speed up the job.

Many years ago I had 38 tonne truck that the turbo broke , I had it towed back to my yard and called a mobile fitter to change it, I left him to do his work while I sorted some paper work out, next thing I know the yard is full of smoke and the sound of an engine about to blow and it did, the fitter had forgot to clean the intercooler and intake out, still he did fit the replacement engine free of charge, I did all my own repairs after that and just had him do the six week inspections, you live and learn. could you have fitted a cartridge instead of a complete turbo ?

Several things Time - he needed the Defender running ASAP, A China cartridge would take a week or so to get here Quality - wanted original parts Damage - the risk of snapping bolts in the housing is quite high as the rust in solid

Hi Mike, the initial play in the turbo rotor, you think to prolong the lifespan its best to let the engine warmup before hitting the throttle right away? Cheers, Albert

No, you install them with a bit of exhaust paste, which swells and fills the gap
