I rebuilt quite a few truck turbos and never had any issues. So long as you keep the two together. If I remember rightly the fans are individually balanced.

As an old lorry driver of some 40+ years, I have always let the engine tick over for a few minuets before turning it off so the oil keeps circulating around the turbo, never had a bad turbo on any of my own trucks. I managed to get just short of 300,000 miles out of my old 2.5 VM and the the turbo was still good, and regular oil changes every 5,000 miles.

I had Land cruiser lj70 and it even read on the dash that dont shut down after hard use because turbo will fail.

A friend has a bitter sweet experience with a Chinese insert. The first one flew away after a couple of kilometers, the new one replaced in the warranty has been working for him for a couple of years. When you ask him or let the turbine rebuild or do it himself he joins your opinion. Cheers to King Mike. 🥃

very interesting .. i don't think most people realise the speed a turbo spins at , and yeah regular oil changes & i believe in letting the engine idle for a few mins both at start-up & shutdown help

I mistakenly diagnosed a whine as the turbo and replaced the core with a Jerone cartridge. Looks great but when bolted together, the cold turbine fauled with the housing. I had to shim the housing to get clearance (don't ask how, it's embarrasing)....eventually got it all together and it's been running OK for a few thousand km....time will tell. My 'turbo whine' turned out to be a plate on the snorkel.....this after fixing exhaust manifold gasket too. Moral of the story....its not always the poor turbo which is first thing that comes to mind.

My Wife would never agree to my installing one of those big Shenck machines in the shed at the bottom of the garden - the thing's too big to hide under your jacket and smuggle it in.

Hi Mike, I tend to agree with replacing a whole part; expensive but peace of mind. If the cartridge is replaced, the condition of the waste gate, actuator and the inside of the turbo housing are unknown. You might be able to set the pressure but the volume/pressure vs turbo rpm characteristics might be different, compared to a new turbo assembly. Oil pressure would be important across the rev range of the engine too. Checkout DiagnoseDan's channel of "Why this new part last one day". A new turbo was fitted by some else before the car was sent to his workshop. To summarise, the oil feed hose was clogged with carbonised oil. So, if replacing or overhauling a turbo, replace the feed and drain hoses, as they're not expensive and check the banjo bolt.

85 2.8 Isuzu td in my Landy on original turbo, it’s water cooled also I would imagine this has a big effect on life of it.

In general I agree that it's not worth the hassle. That being said, I just rebuilt my turbo some month ago, because sadly you can't get any cheap replacement turbos or cartridges for the 19j engine. For the TDIs you can get everything, but for the lumpy TD there's probably no market...and a replacement turbo goes for something like 700$, if you can even find one. So far it's still running fine...(but I only replaced the seals and the bearings and kept the compressor/turbine wheels and tried to mount them in the same position).

That was a good video Mike. One of those things that seem so obvious once you know. I have watched a couple of rebuild videos and it seems a right faf. You have now given me the perfect excuse not to do one! I will stick with the regular oil change a minute idle before shut down after a hard run.

Hi Mike when I started driving semis about 30yrs ago I was taught to when I park to let it idle for about 5mins to let the turbo cool down and to let cooler oil circulate through it. It would make it last longer.

It's good practice to let your engine idle for a bit to let the oil cool down the turbo I always thought. I drive plant machinery and have a disco 2 td5 and always do that. Mike how come we never See td5's in Canada?

I think because of the repairs - most mechanics can work on the 300Tdi but the Td5 seems a bit too 'specialized' rather like the reason they did not sell them in Africa

Mike. That's why it's better to buy an old 200Tdi exhaust manifold for a 300Tdi ? So any new Garrett T25 turbocharger will bolt up to earlier T3 housings mista ! V.

No, as I do not have the tools to cut the recess or the seats - and there are hardly any 2.25 or 2.5 petrol's here

Ah I did ask on one off the previous videos about rebuilding turbos , I should have been more specific in meaning just cartridge replacement/ upgrades as there seems to be a few that claim 500rpm less spool due to better bearings

Not really - I had a brand new turbo blow after 4,000km - they can only be rebuilt by specialist like Turbo Technics in the UK as the variable vanes are clear ceramic coated - mine was sent to a 'specialist' who rebuilt the turbo - only for it to explode after 2 km - ended up buying a brand new Turbo for that motor. Lost may shirt on that - never again!

i completly agree on this - not because only chinese throw cheap replacement kits on the market, its nearly imposible to get it right. anyway, some of the komments states to let turbo engine idle a while after a hard ride. isnt it useful for all engines to let it run a while in idle after a long run to balance the heat between the cylinderhead and the engineblock? surely n/a engines are not so sensitive but the heat diference between head and block cant be good. Anyone experience on this?

Something I don't understand... If both side of the shaft are balanced, the complete shaft should be balanced, not depending the the sides relative positions. I mean, when both your front wheels are balanced, the complete axle is balanced even if you turn left or right (changing your wheel relative positions). It should not matter what position the cold and hot side of the shaft have, as soon as they are both balanced. The video clearly explains that they do both sides then the complete set, but I'm having difficulties to understand why...

The turbo on the fourtrak engine in my Land Rover is nearly 40 years old and 300 plus thousand miles. Why has mine lasted so long when I see new cars in garages with turbo failure?

Hard to say - but I was watching a vid where they were saying turbos now spin up to 250,000 rpm - I was told ( and it may not be true) that the Rrover turbo spins at about 30,000 rpm

The curse of KZbin. I used to make turbochargers and spent over half an hour commenting on this. If you make a link even to another KZbin film you comments sometimes get tossed into the waste bin. I checked for this by leaving some corrections and clicked edit then saved the corrected piece. No "Returned error" comment, so I take everything as OK. Just return to check my comment again and see that it isn't here. I might rewrite it later tonight.

Ever broken a mobile phone screen? After doing so, you'll see a complete screen for, say, £80 and then you'll also see just the LCD for maybe £40 and the digitiser (the touch-sensitive doodad) for about £10. If you've just cracked the screen, you MIGHT think "I can save a few quid by only buying a replacement LCD". No chance. Trying to pull apart the old screen and then bodge all the bits together is a total non-starter. I doubt anybody has ever successfully managed it. They're just selling the repair parts, knowing that people will buy them to try and fix their phone on the cheap. Same thing with turbochargers, IMO. I'm sure there are workshops who DO buy the kits and rebuild turbo's but, for most people, just forget it and buy a turbo cartridge WITH A WARRANTY.

Interesting, but wouldn't you be buying a pre balanced cartridge to swop for the old unit? You wouldn't need to disassemble the compressor and impeller preserving the balance. I do get that it could be a group of Chinese women knocking these together on a kitchen table too😁😁 I guess you pay your money and take you're choice.
