As a Foxbody owner for 22 years, I am on my 3rd one. Having had a 302 carburetor equipped '83, an '88 and '90 EFI 302 equipped car, and my '90 has evolved into a 351W carburetor car. I am running a early 351 block, Comp Cams camshaft, Roush World Product 200cc heads, Victory Jr intake, and Holley 650 carburetor. Out of the 3 cars and 4 engine combos this one pulls the hardest. Granted the only things stock now are the torque converter, rear gears, and the power steering pump. NA 450 HP and 500 ft lbs of torque in a 2900lb car is a blast.

@@bstfordchannel923 Yes sir! I love them foxbodies. I did use the 1.5 inch dropped solid motor mounts. Looking at my 302 Chrome BBK Shorties and the 351W swapped Chrome shorties all I could see was where they "dinged" the #3 runner on the driver's side to clear the steering shaft. So as someone on a budget I just dinged my 302 headers and they work fine. I have a 1" aluminum spacer under the carb and my hood doesn't fit. I run around my little town with the hood just latched at the front. On trips over 55 MPH I remove the hood and put a air cleaner on her. My next plan is a Spectre Carb hat with a 4" cold air intake to the fender like the 5.0L used. This way I can cut my hood to just clear the carb hat. Future plans are for a 408 ci stroker kit and some aluminum heads for less weight. At 408 ci I'll need a 750 carb, 4.10 gears, and a higher stall converter.

You can't get 400 hp on a budget build that will hold up. I priced out all parts and machine work for a 347 build and doing most of the work myself. It hit $8,000. So I would go for the 351w to get as much OEM power you can and then give it a little boost. Just enough boost that you don't have to worry about eating valves or throwing rods. Fill that 302 full of used oil all the way to the spark plugs and stick it in the corner of the garage. One of those little Ford Rangers will come in at the right price some day.

@ltwig4764 жыл бұрын
@@KingJT80 My concern would be the stock 302 rods with this added hp. Part of the reason you stroke a rotating assembly is because you are needing to change to Chevy H-beam type rods anyway. It is like adding new weight on top of a building before shoring it's foundation. I'm a firm believer in simply calling ARP and letting them choose all fastening systems to go with your build once you decide over 350 hp. They will always go 15% over to ensure it stays together.
@KingJT804 жыл бұрын
@@ltwig476 theres a lot of stock block 302s runnning around making that much and stay together. The trick flow and edelbrock rpm top end kits come to mind. Those are both 350 plus up top ends. Tons of people have had those and afr heads on a stock block and made 300 to the wheels. Youre not spinning them at crazy levels to do it. Even 6400 isnt that bad for the olds 302s like mine. ARP bolts are a good insurance but if I build a 347 I'm going to 500hp id just build the 351 at that point You should check out turbo john he has a guy on his channel. Stock block nitrous 302. Runs 5.50 and the 347 runs 5.0s in the 1/8. Thats moving.
@mattfarahsmillionmilelexus4 жыл бұрын
Biggest problem with the 351W is the huge, 460 sized 3" mains. The 302/5.0 has 2 1/4" mains, so it's a more natural revver. With the big mains, you have a low revving torque motor, as taking it too high leads to a bearing spin over-speed issue.
@bstfordchannel9234 жыл бұрын
very true I have a idea with that.. I have to try a 4 banger trick to see if works.. 1st dynamic balancing 2nd cut the internal friction in the motor.. You still will have the issue maybe cause of the throw like you said but its worth a shot IF i rev the crap out the motor. great angle from you Matt.. thank you for the reminder.. i have this in my thoughts
@heavymetalmadness6663 жыл бұрын
What are some big block 460's revved to? likely 8- 10,000 rpm (not stock) If you have ever noticed big diameter journals run higher oil pressure even in stock form to compensate for that. Higher oil pressure means the pump has to work harder though, so there is a slight power trade off on paper . Pontiac 421 and 455 3.25 main journal, 400 3.00. Some choose to stroke the 400 to 455 rather than a 455 because of that.I have seen a couple ford 302 and a Chevy "small journal crank" broke in two with stock engine hp. Weight is weight, but that close to the center line and I doubt your losing much if anything to have a stronger crankshaft overall. On paper the 3.25 main needs higher oil pressure to protect the bearing over the 3 inch main depending on how high it will be revved.

Jaime Rios : Yep. Garret Turbo or Eaton Supercharge Every Ford. BST:The block durability is best on the 351 W. The 351C's blocks are hard to keep cool and true and out of detonation damage unless you decompress. The 302 W 5.0 is able to be protected by sump girdle and Palmear tie rods. When turboed, my opinion is you dont stroke a Ford. The only exception would be a 2.3 liter...Id stroke to 2.5 liter and even use a 2.0 Ranger block to protect the cylinder walls from collapse under heavy boost...always a Ford weakness because after 1969 all Fords except BBFs had iron casting downgrades to pay for winning Le Mans. Ford took all the metal out of small blocks that they added for free to big block FE's, MEL's and all the other revised Lima BBF Thunder Jets from 1968...the 370/429/460. Ak Miller saw a reduction in casting thickness from 242 thou to just 189. On the cylinder walls, from 242 to just 130 on Clevelands verses the FE. So the Message is Al Green Love. Dont be gready on any thin wall Henry. What you save on keeping the internals stock, you spend on the right gearbox and the fully avoiding missed gearchanges wrecking the dream like what happened to the 79-80 Carbed Mustang 2.3. The extra 44 hp that turbo made became a conrod loosing problem when you had really bad wide ratio 4 and 5 speed gearboxes. Miss a gear, shear a rod. Its a turbo verses gearing thang. For cheap thrills, the factory GT40Ps are everywhere and are great heads with soft combustion ( very long lead up before detonation sets in) which protects the not so strong 5.0 block. Id copy Jack Roushes 1988 25 th aniversary Mustang 351 Twin Turbo but with two matched Garret T03 60s from any SVO or two brand new aftermarkets on the Exploder 5.0. The 4bbl look comes by making a custom two twin throttle body MAFs on the upper intake. You join a left and right section of a stock Explorer upper, and put two F150 4.9, 5.0, 5.8 or 7.6 liter EFi throttle bodys on where two of the normal 62 mm MAFs go on the Explorers and Thundetbird MN12s. The dual MAFs are like 2bbl Holleys. They are 47, 50, 52 and 55 mm respectively (300, 302, 351 or 460 with EFi throttle sizes in millimeters) if I remember rightly. You keep the 5.0 rails and injector positions and sensors, and the stock cam. The injectors go up to 36 pounds. Your aiming for a Jack Roush 375 hp at 5000 rpm with the stock Explorer roller and no ring gap increases.The upper has 4 throttles in total feeding the eight ports to the lower intake.( Have a look at The Maserati quad cam V8s from 1966 to 1985 and the 81 to 84 Biturbo and Aston Martin DBS V8 and Vantages used an air cleaner system like it, but they werent EFi.) This suggestion makes an EFi intake a twin 2bbl side draft looking upper intake in alloy, feed by two turbos. If you want a five speed, you just H-A-V-E have to avoid missed gear change rev-through-the-roof failures to block and gear set, so Id personally make it into a modern Liberty Bull Nose TopLoader on the cheap and covert that T5 it to T4 like the Mustang 3.3 liter 1981 gearbox. There was no overdrive on those. It had a T5 case 1352, but no overdrive gearset in the case. My reasoning: There is no need for an overdrive in a turbo 5 liter Explorer engine with 10 pounds of twin turbo boost. The 1974 to 1988 Porsche Carrera Turbos used a close ratio four speed gearbox, and gearfailure was the reason for not providing a Five speed for 14 years of Turbo 3 and 3.3 liter production. You can intercool, but with the EEC5, you can use the stock Ford clock speed for one MAF, and operate two of them under load with the aftermarket 80 dollar knock sensor and the the electronics are easier. The EEC5 that was turbo was the Barra engine management system gentelmen. Ti in Oz have a kit to turbo the EEC5 which is mapped. The Aussie 5.6 liter Falcon T3 250 kilowatt Pursuit engine is just an Explorer 5.0. When done this way with twin turbos and no internal mods and a good strong gearbox you wont miss a gear on, youll have a softer boost curve, with more control of boost on and off the throttle.Turbines for Speed BatMan!.

Junkyard Tips: Lot of yards drain all the fluids before sending them out, but the stick itself will still tell you something. Look at the top of the stick for carbon and odd color. Pull the fill cap and flip it over look for milk or carbon. Coolant Res, same thing, look for oil and milk res. As for which one would I do, the 302 or 351? Which ever one I can put a carburetor on and throw the factory ECU in the garbage. That and space, those 302's fit in really tight spots like the old cars/trucks from '55 down that came with I6's or Shock Tower Fords from the 60's.

was going to say the same about the oil cap, but i'll add...in some yards, you can grab GT40P heads from an explorer, bolt them on a 351W small block, and still count as an engine core cost. The race spec 5.0 Greens Tough or Yellow Pine Pac Mustang Foxes with a " lofting it" roller cam and stock intake savagely cut, internaly ported and two pot epoxied back together. It end up with the same power as a K code 289 GT40 Le Mans 304/318 cam four IDA engine made in 1967. 350 to 390 hp and it was still about 40 to maybee 110 hp down on the best Qjet 304or twin IDF Holden 308. It used the 650 double pumper Holley 4bbl, headers and ported heads with 11 to 1 compression and the stock 85 forgrd pistons. And a BMW/Volvo/ Vauxhall Getrag 5 speed 262 case gearbox. I don't think Ive heard a nicer engine. The 289 GT350 and Boss 302 perhaps had a harder edge, but they werent geared with a close ratio five speed and missed the better ignition and roller cams lovely soft warble. The 50 ounce unbalance crank probably is responsible for the many oil pump, timing gear and block cracking failures in the later 390 hp at 7000 rpm trim, but there were factory zero balance steel Motorsport SVO cranks to help out. Not legal for Group À. 155 mph at 7000 rpm is pretty nice.

351 Cleveland is expensive and uncommon nowadays, but was a strong performer in the 70s. 351 Windsor has a stronger block than late model 5.0 HO 302 engines and can use almost all of their aftermarket parts, but 351Ws tend to come with shitty cast rods, pistons and truck cams, so they need a bit of work before dumping them into a Foxbody or something similar if you're wanting high compression or boost. Explorer 5.0 engines are pretty nice; you get hypereutectic pistons and forged rods, decent GT40 heads and EFI intake out of the chassis, but it suffers from thin main webbing like all 302 blocks. I run a supercharged 302 in my Foxbody and a NA Explorer 5.0 in my Ranger. I need the low deck height of the 302 for header clearance in the Ranger, though I'd love a 351W based build for the Foxbody. Clevelands IMO aren't worth it in 2020; aftermarket is more expensive and limited compared to Windsors. Once you bolt on some aftermarket heads to a 351W, you have an engine that can match or exceed the performance of a Cleveland, and is lighter and cheaper to build. Easy choice unless you want the Cleveland look for a 70-74 chassis.

Victor jr. Single plane demon full time 4bbl ,long tube headers. 125 shot nitrous on 110 gas ran 7.11 at 93 in 1/8 mile. Not super fast but fun. My project I went with a 351w . The plan was to stroke it to 408, but it just ended up being a 351+ the .030 over, so it's about 360. It seems at that the 302 stroked to a 347 might have been the way to go. The swap headers is the big difference for my application. The cost difference between 302 and 351 swap headers is the cost of the stroker crank. I ran eagle rods and new pistons, so only the crank is a stock piece. Big mains can run high rpm, but you need very high oil pressure. Everything about the 351 is just flat out bigger and some what better. Though a 302 is around 50 -100 pounds lighter considering heads and intake are the same metals. My 351 should weigh what the stock iron head and intake 302 did. I don't care what many might think, but the 3 inch stroke isn't good enough for a moderate street driven car, and had no business ever being put in trucks.You are just throwing a lot of seat of the pants feeling away for some rpm range you'll rarely ever be at, or gearing it to 4.11 or more and screaming down the highway when you didn't need to with 3.30 or 3.55 gears that would net the same feeling with the higher torque curve and at lower rpms with the bigger stroke. My opinion super budget build 351w all the way, And in all reality I was just hoping to put a nice stock 351 in my project, cam it and hope for 250 hp. But once you tear it down and it this and that isn't good enough and next thing you know now why not go for 400 horse power. At the 400 goal a 347 or 351 is a toss up, and based on engine packaging.Over 400 and money is no object then you're building a 427 out of a 351w platform, and 550 +hp

@@jerryfrost6783 I'm aware the deck heights and my point was more about the 8.2 289/302 vs a 351w 9.5 . As it gets taller it also gets wider, so headers become some what of a major issue. Hood clearance might be a factor as well. My car is perfect 351w with Weiand stealth intake, but I have a Shelby style hood that adds some room for the combo with enough air cleaner. My original thought was run that intake with a 1 inch spacer to open the plenum up for both banks, but hood clearance would be an issue with a proper air cleaner .If I'm just shy of a goal I'll pull the intake back off and mill the center divider down an inch, or run the spacer and no air cleaner( which I could do but never would)

I'll take the 302; it was in my 1969 Coupe with over 253,000 miles, fun car to work on, very simple. What I did to it. Reinforce the sub-frame boxes. Shock towers reinforced with a Shelby Shock Tower Brace with a Monte Carlo Bar. Holley Two Barrel Carb. Dual Exhaust with cross over H-Pipe. Added a heavier Sway Bar in the front with a Sway Bar in the Back with welded in sleeve bushing I made. Gas Shocks, Stock Steel Rims Moon Caps. I drove it all the time. With the added Sway Bars I could go around a corner FLAT! The sad News is that a car ran a RED Light hit me, I spun around hit two other cars it was totaled. Two Barrel Carb vs Four Barrel just uses more gasoline. My Two Barrel Carb was very efficient with performance. I got 18-19 mile per gal. I didn't have to prove anything. With over 253,000 mile on it I could still hit 95 mph easy! The Key why my 302 lasted was Oil Changes & Marvel Mystery Oil was its lead substitute when added to gasoline, protected the Top Cylinders what Leaded Gasoline use to do. In December 1999 was its end. I still miss that car! When my Brother bought it in 1974 as a used car it had 79,000 mile on it. yet we found out later the engine was bored out, this is why it had a little more bang! Take care, keep it simple!

@LITTLE19944 жыл бұрын
It's all preference and money. For my '89 Vic, I would want a 351W because it's larger and that's what the police version had. But if the 302 could go beyond 500hp (I'm good with at least 425hp Hemi-like power), I'm fine with that.

VERY VERY true statement you made hear... Its all about what you like and what to spend on... Your making good numbers I mean GREAT numbers
@alertgasper Жыл бұрын
if the engine compartment is small, the 302 is a good idea, since its less weight on the front tires (where 60% of the braking happens, but i'm referring to handling issues) and more room for a real exhaust header like a tri y or long collector. this is even more a factor when an OEM Windsor head is used, due to the poor exhaust ports. But I also see on the internet, Fox Mustang owners who toss a bunch of parts at their car (like, say, 4.10:1 rear gears and then complain they can't get traction) and then don't experiment with different launch RPMs (some 5.0 owners will take off at 4,000 RPM with OEM cylinder heads) or how many times they change gears in a quarter mile. A well tuned OEM 5.0 will turn a 13 second quarter, so if you swapped a bunch of parts and you're not beating mid 13's, you may want to reconsider your driving style first before adding a bigger engine.

very true on the heads its not a big change in horse power and i do need to do some fitment.. that will cost very little.. again this is the issues i face with these head swaps ( pros and cons ) when I pick one I have to stick to it.. Thats why I ask what is the recipe from you guys.. This is a great reminder Stephen cause this is what I battle with
@murphystreeter4 жыл бұрын
Don't put big power to the 351. The blocks break at the middle main journal up to the cam. When it starts to knock, you'll know your OE block is ruined. 302 (short deck Windsor) is much more durable. OE buildable to 400+hp without catastrophic failure. Take your late model 302 and modified your Cleveland heads for a wet intake, throw on a big carb, bump your distributor to 34° (lock it in) and you're done. No changes to the lower end or the cam. Already a roller.

What I want to know is, what happened to the white Crown Vic you got from Vincent? What's going on with the Maverick? Why not finish the Maverick and save these other ideas for another day? If not, why not put an old school motor in that white Vic and a 5 speed and let it be your new project?
@bstfordchannel9234 жыл бұрын
Mr Harrison this is for the white vic brother.. I finally figure what to do with the car. That will cost little money ( in theory ) .. Maverick has to get wired up. That is a task do to light and time I have to sit down with that and do NOTHING else. ... These thought is all about seeing which taste on the people on this... There will bet the 1st stange STOCK then break down engine and go from there.. This can not be done next week.. I'm running a 306 long block crate engine in my 1970 mustang from BluePrint Engines. It makes 370 crank HP and it is almost as fast as my 04 Cobra. Even though the cobra is faster I still think the 1970 mustang is much more fun to drive. There is something about old school metal and the smell of unburnt gasoline lol
@bstfordchannel9233 жыл бұрын
you said something here the older car is cooler drive AND just as fast as the 04 cobra. It is the metal.. We have a connection with it vs a car that made out of plastic ( thats the disconnect ) naturally people do not see that way.. Thats why we tend to have a connection with motorcycles ( more metal ) in many cases ( sound and speed ) is win to. Great comment Rafael

Having built/used both in street rods, would always PREFER a 351W. Unfortunately the added 2-1/4" width at the heads wont always be your friend using a 351, Had I decided on a 351 in my current instead of a 302/5.0 Model A with stock dimension frame rails would have needed stockstyle exhaust manifolds instead of decent headers. Even those headers necessitated some "interesting" work to install steering shafting. Added 351 height may also have been a problem with the 5" engine setback and recessed firewall. A modular 4.6 or 5.0 was considered until I got the 'yardstick' out. Yeah, coulda, but not really worth the added cost plus time. Chebbie belly button engine - NOT in any Ford of mine.

Now I've had both 302 and 351 Clevos in and a couple of XA/XB Falcons... and yeah they are both good, but ya just beat the awesome feeling on stomping on the Loud peddle and letting those 351 inches launch you towards the horizon. In the video of you at the wreckers, those are all Windsor's in the Mustangs, so no good for a Clevo build. Mind you as my own current Falcon is one of the rare XR6 performance variants and although the Barra is a viable option for a engine swap, I really want a 351W for her... because a true performance Falcon has a 351

I didn't see Marauder mentioned. That car recalls a time when law enforcement got with OEMs to keep up on the nations roads. The cars that this model hearken s back to had the unmistakable sound of authority, and the speed to match! ---- four doors. So if you notch the frame, slam it just a little and not get to silly with the paint work, you might be able have your cake and eat it to. So go check out some of the folks cars like these were meant to keep up with. Example? Jr.Johnson and many other of some of best drivers the world has ever seen -- NASCAR. By the way, most were never caught.

As far as the 302 351 decision, 302 goes good in a small car like the maverick and 351 would be better in a bigger car. But nothing wrong with putting a 351 in a small car. A lighter package will require less hp to roll out. As far as Cleveland vs Windsor, not so sure. You can get lots of hp out of both.

@wanderinggentile4 жыл бұрын
If you're putting an automatic in the upcoming project, I would go for a 351 with its big fat torque. Big heavy cruisers are cool, and you're not having to wind it out to merge onto the expressway. In the Maverick with a stick, the 302 isn't as large physically as a 351W, and you can get more oomph by revving the pee out of it. That looks like more of a light competition build, and you can throw first-gen Mustang parts at it to make something that will corner well, too. I love all the Cobra stuff, but on a Windsor, I think it suits the character of a smaller car better. The big car with a generic set of polished aluminum valve covers and a clean polished plenum would be straight out of a Hot Rod Lincoln model.

Thats a good point on the look of the 351 just keep that to its own lane as far as looks,. And keep cobra style to the little v8s
